Companions items

tholthertholther Member, NW M9 Playtest Posts: 113 Arc User
At the moment it is a bit confusing the items for companions. Take the rings; you can put in the slots 'normal' rings but also companion rings (weird because often 'normal' rings are better than companions) . With the necklaces and the belts is the same. Other items like holy icons and talismans must be companions stuff only.
I wonder why.
My suggestion is: shouldn't it be better to use only companion stuff for the companions?

Greetings

Only Artifact icons and talismans (and artifact necklaces and belts as well) cannot be equipped on companions.
M15 brought a slew of new crafted gear that is NOT artifact gear that can be used on companions.
And the Lvl 70 crafted gear (Oak Icon +1, Gold Talisman +1, Shimmerweave Sword Knot +1 to name a few) are stats-wise stronger than their IG ____ of the Companion +5.
Exceptions being if you want Defensive stats, or for Belts as those don't have the stats to offset x2 OFF slots.

As for Companions only being able to equip Companions Only gear, I'd say leave it open to equip anything not an artifact. People who are leveling their first char will need to throw something on their companion to gear it up and I don't think we want to force them into running IG for that.
Warlock: Don't want to let you down but I am hell bound. - Imagine Dragons
Cleric: You can be an angel of mercy or give in to hate. - Shinedown
Wizard: The more the dark consumes me, I pretend I'm burning bright. - Shinedown
Barbarian: Am I beautiful... as I tear you to pieces? - In This Moment

Of course new players will need something for their companions but then NW should have to give them low level companions gear by completing some quests or finding some especial treasures or completing some dungeons.
My point is that it could be better to use only companion gear on companions. It's more logical and less confusing.

The gear is the gear. Relatively overpowered companion-only gear was introduced in the web companion app first (the app was decommissioned later). One could still see expensive Loyal Avenger gear on AH. And it was a mistake IMHO. Current crafted/drop gear is a much better approach. The state is good as it is possible to equip companion with reasonable gear cheaply and one does not need to gather millions just to equip companion. The situation was particularly bad when one need to change companion. This gives long awaited flexibility in the companion selection again.

The gear for the companion of new players is just normal low level gear. Any gear that match the type you can pick up from the floor (in low level). Nothing special and nothing confusing.

It is confusing sometimes. I remember some time ago (...) having 'normal'sword knot on a companion. That sword knot was red coloured and I was wondering why. Later I found out that the sword knot had to be a especial one for a companion.
If this happened to me you can bet that it happens to others too.
Anyway it was a suggestion and the devs can decide what to do with it. I thought it could be a good idea. I still think so. Gear for the characters and gear for companions.

Not sure "better", but definitely "different".

It would be a relatively easier way to control how many stats players get from companions so we don't run into the situation now where all the geared players are over Critting, sit at 70,000-80,000 Power from self buffs, capped ArmorPen, and now just have Recovery to invest in. I also don't think the dev team intended that our first instinct on getting a +5 Gravestriker ring was to ... stuff them in our pet rather than put it on our character and embrace the bling. Same goes for some of the Masterwork gear like the Beaded Restoration stuff or Electrum necklaces.

But, say they take your suggestion into account. Could you imagine the rage from all the people who invested in Masterwork stuff, only to find out that said gear in their pet slots wouldn't? I am quite certain the devs are trying to avoid more rage, because there's already a lot of people pretty upset about the changes.

Also worth noting that companion gear isn't very common in the game: I recall that no leveling quests gave any companion exclusive gear, meaning the only sources are the Level 70 skirmishes (IG/Folly), AH/lockboxes, or the Stronghold stuff that likely won't be available to newbies for a long time. Unless the devs revamp the acquisition of companion gear (of which I highly doubt), you'll be leaving newbies really confused on how they can gear their companions.

I don't think what you described is correct. I believe you misunderstood what that red means. It is red because your main character cannot use it. However, your companion can.

My SW has a Erinyes of Belial who has a sword knot slot. She is carrying a red blue level 60 (item level 180) sword knot for years. Belial is not my summon companion. No, it is not a companion only sword knot. It is red because my SW cannot use sword knot.
