question about professions / tools / skill nodes / "leadership"

I like the overall look of the professions but I am a bit at a loss:

1. In the new profession system for blacksmithing, I am level 9, and I was able to hire a level 9 blacksmith by chance.

but when I try to do any of the profession tasks, it requires a tool, and the lowest level tool I can get for blacksmithing is minimum profession level 10 - the Bronze Cross-pein Hammer. is there some other tool that I am supposed to be able to use below level 10? hovering over the tool button does not give any indication of what tool I am supposed to be using for blacksmithing. it is really confusing.

2. do skill nodes no longer drop any profession materials? I was only getting refinement jewels and junk treasure items. ugh, I am really disappointed if that is the case.

3. I know "leadership" has been changed to gathering, but from what I read on the preview summaries, I thought most of the tasks would be kept the same. are the gathering tasks now only to get profession materials? I suppose they eliminated the ability to get xp or enchanted coffers now? (like from the leadership task Battle Elemental Cultists).

    1. To the right of the workbench is a load of boxes, you should be able to buy other tools of any of the professions, including gathering from there. I bought an item and it was "worn".
    2. Have not even tried that, that would be news to me :(
    3. Yes, leadership has been completely gutted and all you got for it was this crappy gathering skill. Complete suck.

hi pit - thank you so much; yes, it was the worn tools in the workbench. so obvious, and I just missed it. thank you!

It will be interesting to see what your experience with crafting will be. Many of us here have already maxed out crafters - max rank in some/all professions and we are mostly just interested in making some of the "end-game" items.

I am curious whether anybody actually finds crafting useful while leveling up - that is, are you for example able to make items for yourself that are better than random drops, or do you find the gold cost to be excessive?

    Hoping for improvements...

Even if there are useful equipment at level while leveling up, the gold costs will completely make it impossible. If only the quests you do while leveling had a huge increase in end gold reward, that would probably help. I can even imagine people going back to finish quest lines they totally skipped while leveling if gold quest rewards got a huge bump, and it's probably the right place to add an extra gold source.

I started a new character to take advantage of the promos and, so far, by level 45, the Gold costs are trivial. I can only see it being a problem for those who do not actually pick up stuff. For me, as long as I am not in a Dungeon or Skirmish (because it would slow down other players, and I don't want to be THAT guy) I hoover up literally everything. I sell the Greens unidentified and I.D. the Blues as it ups the value substantially. I also pick up all that 'worthless' treasure from Skill Nodes. Yeah, it does mean that I need to sell off my gear more often, but it works for me.

with the update, it seems easier to pick drops up since you no longer have to confirm (it is like "hoovering" as jorifice said). I thought it was a reset of a game option/preference setting, but I read the release notes and noticed that they had changed it. The one frustrating thing is that now I will pick up items that I do not want to bother picking up, but overall the auto-pickup is more convenient.

overall, I like the look and interface of the new professions crafting system. I like the variability of the profession hired artisans.

    1. but it feels like a gold/astral diamond sink - I do not know if that is good/bad for the economy, but it seems obvious that it was designed as a way to make the gold currency relevant, and to serve as an astral diamond trap for those who want to upgrade the workshop quickly (through south sea trading company).
    2. it is more time consuming than before.
    3. I really thought that there was a mention by the devs that you things that you can get from the previous professions system like refinement gems would be available in gathering, but I am not seeing that (yet). I am disappointed that many of the previous leadership rewards/tasks are gone.

maybe overall though, I will have to accept that this crafting system is better for the game economy. it looks like a lot of the changes they made in this update were intended to curtail inflation, so possibly it will have a positive effect on the game, but I feel like I will be investing less time with the profession system after I level up the workshop a bit.

You can get gem parts via gathering and then you craft them with jewelcrafting. Also needed are whetstones, which are presumably crafted via some other profession.

Have you been able to make useful gear for your level or is the character leveling way faster than the profession can catch up?
