Legendary Companions give less stats the more you have but what order does it take them, Slot 1 is companion 1 etc or the order you made them legendary in?

I don't understand how or why you think it would make a difference.
If you have 5 or less legendary active, you will get the appropriate bonus regardless of which slot they are in. All that matters is how many active companions are legendary. You could have 8 legendary, but if only 3 are active you will get the bonus for 3.
Because each one gives half the bonus, beginning with 16%, so it would be interesting to be sure which ones 8, 4, 2, ?
It really makes no difference which companion has which amount. It uses the total number that are active for the bonus. If there are 3 active you get 16+8+4 (or 4+16+8 and 4+8+16), no matter which order you upgraded or which slots they are in it is 28% for 3. You would never get 4+2+1 or 8+4+2 for example.
It probably uses some sort of if>then decision tree based on slot order or reverse slot order. It would be much harder to program the code if they started at a random companion.
But each companion has different stats so would make more sense to have one with highest stats giving 8%
No, you only get the boost to the stats of the active companion. That is the summoned one. The other legendary companions only increase the bonus from the summoned one in decreasing amounts. The summoned one does not need to be legendary to get the stat boost from the other legendary companions. A summoned non-legendary with 3 other legendary would still pass on 28% just like a summoned legendary with 2 other active (total of 3) would.
Would love to hear an official word on this as it seems there are a few schools of thought.
That is unlikely. You can find the blog and patch notes to see that the bonus goes to the summoned companion. They cannot answer every post.
It seems the OP and one other poster thought he got 16% of 1 companion then 8% of a different companion's stats etc. That's not how it works.
The boosts all go to the summoned companion who passes on 16 to 31% of its stats to you based on the number of legendary companion, if at least one is present. Zero, if there are none.
ugh..thanks... I had jumped to the conclusion that it was such a good idea to make all of those runes/gear/enchantments valuable that the simple thing escaped me... Think i've spent so much money on wards lately it seemed as if they were just building that market out ... ..swing and a miss..
