So ya. stopped playing roughly a month after Tyranny of Dragons came out due to guild drama. Decided today on a whim to give the game another shot.
Gonna be playing a Paladin (Tankadin) cuz they weren't around back before I quit and I love Pallys in D&D (smiting the wicked and defending the innocent.. *Kreygasm*)
I know that as of right now, the game has received more major updates since I quit, than it did while I was playing, so asking for what I've missed would be a tall order. So I'll just ask: is there anything EPICLY MAJOR I should know about?
(side note: Castle Never is still considered HARD? o.O HOW? the level cap isn't even 60 anymore!)

That was a game changer for me when I did the same as you about a month ago.
Also, just doing Dalies, dungeons, skirmishes, etc. will award you 'Seals Of The Protector'. Turn these in to a Seal Vendor in Protectors Enclave for a really NICE set of armor that will make Storm Kings Thunder much easier for someone who is several years behind in the Gear Grind. You can get a nice set of Shirt and Pants fairly quickly from the Underdark Campaign Store, or just buy them reasonably in the AH.
This won't get you to bleeding edge endgame, but it WILL save you tons of time, AD, and rare Crafting Components (if, like me, you tried to handle things the same way you were when you left and Crafted a bunch of what USED to be high end stuff that was now eclipsed by the stuff I mentioned) and let you get back into the swing of things fairly quickly.
Hope this helps.

Blink your eyes, and the world you see next did not exist when you closed them. Therefore, he said, the only appropriate state of the mind is surprise. The only appropriate state of the heart is joy. The sky you see now, you have never seen before. The perfect moment is now. Be glad of it.' Terry Pratchet The Thief Of Time
Strongholds and the VIP program came out next. VIP grants you perks for monthly 1,000 zen (500,000 AD) it is my opinion that it is not worth it to me, others disagree. I encourage players to deal with my opinion and not attempt to change it. Strongholds are an extension of the guild where you get a broken down castle on a new map with level 70 creatures to fight. Fighting creatures and doing chores allows you and your guild to rebuild the castle.
- Underdark and Maze Engine are very similar basically fight and kill demons to get boons, armor, weapons, etc..
- Stormking's Thunder introduced a free boat and new fishing program. Better fishing program than most other MMOs offer.
- I can't speak for or against the The Cloaked Ascendancy as I haven't touched it. My friends have said it is a royal pain in the posterior.
Chult has been the latest. Pros are user made armors and artifact weapons (set 13) in your collections. You can use your boat and fishing gear in the river. But I can't get into this whole dinosaur theme. That is just the way I am. I do love vampires and I am looking forward to Ravenloft.Have fun, hope you stick around this time.
VERY sad to hear the Gaunt Dungeons are gone, they were alot of fun.
You can do most of the campaign at the same time (if you can handle them) because most of them are time gated except Elemental Evil which you can keep going without being stopped. I would skip Sea of Moving Ice.
Cloaked Ascendancy is pretty easy if you don't rush it and just do the daily and weekly minimum. It may take a long time but it is not hard.
There are a lot of new mechanics relating to mounts and the stable system. Bonding stones are the best option for pets. Leadership no longer gives RAD. Dungeons rarely drop unbound items. You run them for RAD and through Random Queue. There are no Dungeon Delve hours. You use keys.
Like you I am a returning player from 4+ yrs ago as I only played PVP and dropped it at lvl 35 ish due to numerous reasons, some of which are still present in the PVP scene. Now I only play PVE and am enjoying the game. I can not really comment on what is new etc from lack of exp but will list how I approached my return to the game.
1. Deleted my old character, created a healer:
DPS are the vast majority in the game, queues for healers are a lot shorter. Went through all the quests I could, realised it was soo slow when getting to places like Storm Kings and left her for random playing and to complete campaigns at leisure.
2. Created a DPS:
Blitzed through content I already done on healer and the rest, easy life.
3. Purchased More character slots:
More characters = more AD revenue possibilities = easier progression however this may change be warned!
Progression in this game is very weird. Low lvls is okish / irrelevant most times but after that iL and campaign unlocks limit what you can play. You may get iL but not have a campaign unlock or visa versa and gear progression is in very similar spot. Dungeon loot locked in chests requiring keys, limited by your resources or bypassed with IRL money. Much of the time you will have better gear then that in the chest by the time your able to farm and open a decent amount of them mainly because the gear is out dated and AH sells better/similar loot. Campaign keys are time gated too.
4. Purchased VIP:
A lot in this game is centred around incentivising players with more things or quicker progression for IRL money. Campaigns and boon unlocks, more salvaged AD / WB discounts / AH listing fees / upgrading items / actual gear / invoking bonuses / fast travel, mail and banking system / lockboxes, mounts, keys etc. The in game exchange for currency -> irl money -> currency works and is good imo but changes for this are soon to come.
5. Slowly progressing Alts:
I have 8 characters, one of each to play. Under current system they enable me to progress my main character, earning AD to put in the pot whilst changing up the play style scene. They earn seals to gear up / salvage and get given gear from main too. These may become near obsolete with proposed changes.
6. Look for guild at some point:
The social benefits / drawbacks from guilds are well known. I have been in no rush to join one as have been very busy doing my own things. Those aside they offer up to 2k? in guild boon iLvls which can enable you to play content months, maybe years quicker for some then if played solo. Highly recommend looking into them if not done so already.
It is my exp that enjoying the quests/story should be done at least once, personally I prefer to get to 70 via random queue and then go through the campaigns but each to their own. Epic changes that may interest you not currently in game but proposed and soon upcoming include changes to alts / AD / refinement / seals / random queue structure and new Mod. Depending on your chosen playstyle it could change a lot for you or not at all. Maybe someone can link them for you or search in feedback area I think. Either way welcome back and remember to have fun.

Invocation does not give rAD anymore but it still gives AD bonus which is stored in a pool. Whenever your earn rAD, you can add 50% more rAD and reduce the same amount from the AD bonus pool.
You can only take one potion/food/etc of each type unlike you could drink 10+ potions in the past.
I had alot of fun the last few hours but that BS might just make me quit all over again.
Except the 3 T2s, dungeons have a campaign key associated with them that opens a second chest. You can usually make 1 day or use the super keys mentioned above (Legendary Dragon Key)
Completing an instance from Random Queue, gives RAD directly to you as well as seals. No keys are needed here but after the first run each day, these rewards are throttled back.
The chests contain equipment (fit only for salvage) and more seals. Campaign key chests have the same plus often some RP. There is a rare chance from either chest to get bonus items (pets, mounts, artifacts) which may be unbound, 100% chance in harder dungeons.
I'd do merchants folly for the pants and shirt, try to grind out a little ig gold for pet gear. get bondings as high as you can and worry about your pets bondings before your own enchants. join a guild. get the chult gear. and work on those boons.
