This happened to me twice this weekend. Trials take 20 minutes. What is the point to abandon after 15 minutes. Most players are coming from RQ and will lose their pay. By 15 minutes into a busted run, many players are already afk. Then all it take is for a few players that don't know any better or didn't RQ to vote yes and everyone loses.

Results are the same, you might get lucky and get a good group but it's not the norm unless the trial has been power creeped to death.
What usually happens is you get one or two really noisy people shouting instructions on how the trial should be done. Usually these instructions are twisted versions on what a player should do, sometimes they are just plain wrong.
Then the bickering and the blame game start.
If at this point you are still busting your balls trying to come up with a good insult, you might not have realised the trial is a bust already.
It doesn't matter who you blame for what, it all comes down to the group didn't have the gear necessary to complete the trial in the time they needed to do it. It wasn't that noob who didn't pick a white gem in Tiamat, it wasn't that idiot who lagged for 30 seconds in Demogorgon and had Goristro charge a black portal.
My favourite story, a not very well geared DC shouting out instructions the whole match, proudly announcing how much better he knew the mechanics than anyone else. Got targeted for hypothermia, ran away from group and jumped into wall of wind, promptly died, blamed the entire group, rage quit. TOTALLY the groups fault.
There is a surpisingly EASY option to deal with these people, mute the stupid HAMSTER. Because it really annoys the HAMSTER out of me when someone decides that out of 10 players, they are the only one that knows what they are doing.
If your group doesn't have the gear it's not going to be able to do the damage in the time frame they need to do it. Personally, I think the moment you add a time limit, you reduce the Trial down to a DPS race. Ras Nsi is a DPS race, the faster you can take him out the less important his attacks become, there is one group I run with and only one group I run with where two of the players are just so damned good they ignore his attacks completely, the tanks are only there to buff the dps.
CN was probably the best boss fights in the game, almost all of his attacks were foreshadowed in the dungeon you ran and while he could be zapped, pre-nerf, if your group didn't have the gear to kill him in 30 seconds it could be a tough fight. It brutally punished those who took his attacks lightly. But is the gear in those chests worth a 30-60 minute fight, nope.
And I agree, gear isn't everything, but you give a good player HAMSTER gear and he can do well, give him better gear and he's going to shine. In TONG 2 HR's and an MoF stand out in my memory, one HR claimed to be HDPS, he wasn't, that was a HAMSTER awful run, though we did it in the end, I don't care if was HDPS or not, I'll gladly take an HR buffer but don't advertise if you are HDPS and you are clearly not, the MoF in that group would not stop whining, complaining, telling folks what they were doing wrong and it got worse on boss fight, they eventually quit, a GWF friend joined to help, boss was dead in 5 minutes. The next had great gear, swore and blamed the DC's at every turn, where did he keep dying? Standing next to tank facing Ras Nsi, replaced him with an HR who knew what he was doing, Ras Nsi was dead in under 5 minutes.
So, moral of the story is, if some noisy player has singled you out as the problem in a run, don't take it to heart, do the best you can and then mute him when the run is done and don't take it to heart if you get a busted run either, make friends, forming private groups will teach you ALOT about the game and improve your ability as a player.
