Last night I updated to the most recent Fall Creator's Update in Win10, and since then I'm getting D3D crashes with the error "error code (E_INVALIDARG) while creating D3D device" when trying to start Neverwinter. It happens in both Safe Mode and normal, fullscreen and not, with command line flags for D3D 11, 10, and even 9 (the fix to the previous, OTHER D3D crash, which I know shouldn't work any more but I tried to see if I'd get a different error.)
It's happening every single time on my previously-working laptop. No problems on my Desktop. I'm currently doing a full reinstall of Neverwinter and will update this post once it finishes with "worked!" or "No change".
Laptop (problem PC) hardware:
Dell Latitude E6520, 8GB RAM, i7-2720QM processor, Intel HD 3000 and Nvidia NVS 4200M graphics cards. Win10. So it's OLD, but until yesterday it worked just fine.
Any thoughts/suggestions?

"I have heard back from the developers, and they can confirm there are issues related to the errors and information you submitted. They are looking into potential fixes, and so for now all we can do is wait until any updates are released for your crashes. Thank you for your continued patience in this matter."
So, unless I find a combination of settings to try, I'm WALRUSed for at least the long weekend.
Oh well! Time to do a Steam-based install and see if that behaves any differently. And play on my Desktop. And also consider a new laptop because hey, The Pride Of 2010 is something I've been looking into replacing anyway, and it's sale season.
If I find a workaround or get another update from Support I'll post it here.
Step 1: Plug an external monitor or TV into my laptop's HDMI port.
Step 2: Tell my laptop to display ONLY on the external monitor (no laptop screen, only the external screen)
Step 3: Start Neverwinter. Neverwinter starts correctly, WITHOUT this error.
Step 4: alt-tab back to Windows display settings, and tell the laptop to display only on the local laptop screen.
Neverwinter is now running correctly, on my laptop screen, and I can safely disconnect the external monitor. I could, of course, just play on the external screen, but I don't want to do that.
Note that in step 2 I *must* tell the laptop to display ONLY on the remote screen. If I am set to mirror displays or to extend displays but start Neverwinter on the external screen, the same error appears.
So it's an inconvenient workaround, but it DOES work.
I have been having the other type crash since May 2017. I have an old laptop I run it on also. I just learned to take the grief. Worst time is when your about to open a chest at the end of a skirmissh and it crashes. Gah/ Ahh well first world problem.
Glad you got yours sorted.
