A month into the Game, some musings from a new Player.

Pretty new to the game.

Been wandering for about a month now, and currently have a Lvl42 Drow SW as my Main and only character. Just a bit confused by the sheer number of different currencies in the game, but I think I'll get a handle on it with time.

Starting the Dragons Campaign. I didn't know that the "Helping the Harpers" 3x Quest required you to do three (3) 20 hour waits. That seems a bit... excessive to me. The timer should have wound down to completion on my third completion by the time I get home from work today. Definitely looking forward to fully going through this Campaign.

Though I am excited to get to lvl60 or 70. I know I don't really need to worry much about Armor/Weapons until I hit end-game levels (veteran of many MMO's over the last 20+ years), but I'm kind of excited to see how I can maximize my build once I get there.

Mostly I'm just exploring and learning. Not sure if I should upgrade my Healer companion or not. I'm nowhere near 50k in Astral Diamonds. I also run a few dungeons per day, but it seems like only one dungeon run pays out AD's? Bug maybe?

After blindly training stuff up in the Professions/Crafting, someone finally let me in the loop that Artificing is used to create Implements for my Scourge Warlock. Wish I had known that earlier... (maybe the Devs could add in a tool-tip that says what each Profession creates which items?)

Other than that, I'm enjoying a D&D themed proper MMORPG.

But as I get closer to "end-game" levels, I find myself wondering if I made the right choices with upgrading my enchantment runes. Wondering if I'm utilizing my Companions properly. Skill choices and point expenditures (though the game seems to prompt one to place points in a little bit of everything in order to hit the next "Tier" of Skills).

But even if I make(or have already made) a mistake that is irrevocable with my Skills, I wonder if I can rectify or live with those mistakes. I don't relish the idea of doing the level grind again to fix any mistakes I may make...

But I'm enjoying the game so far. It's a fun romp in an MMO that I am coming to enjoy greatly. Looking forward to finishing out the level grind to see what kind of SW I can run with at end-game. :)

You will be able to rectify, or "respec" your powers and feats down the road (IIRC you get a free respec at 70).

Companion use changes at end game. As a SW you wont need (or want) your healing companion, as you can gain more precious DPS stats from other companions that you will want to level up... but gaining XP for your companions is easy, so don't sweat it, just don't waste your upgrade tokens/AD on upgrading them to the next tier until you know what you want (Acquire three high ranked bonding stones).

If you have been completing the quests along the way for the blind Sybil clone in Protectors Enclave, you will earn a currency from those quests that will allow you to buy a companion, artifact and... a reroll token.
You can use that token to essentially "rebuild" the character by way of skills, powers, feats, paragon path and so on. Don't rush into it, (but you can buy more tokens from the Zen store if you muck up, and there'll probably be a chance for a free one over the Jubilee event.) there are many online "builds" that high end players have put up for people to use.
Look at some of them for ideas.
A lot just say. "You need this, this and this..." but don't explain how or why stuff compliments other stuff. So unless you have a LOT of AD to burn you won't know what order to get stuff.
There are some truly exceptional online builds, that may, or may not, be as good in game as any other, but they go into detail about why a certain companion compliments a specific feat selection, or how combining insignia with enchantments a certain way helps a specific character build.
If you know why stuff works, then you are better placed to make your own tweaks to suit your budget and experience.

Keep experimenting, and when someone tells you, "this is how you do it" its worth getting a second opinion.

I would definitely recommend saving your AD to buy a month of VIP. It has amazing perks to it, and you get an enchanted key every day, so long as you get on to claim it every day. Neverwinter sadly is a pay to win in many regards, so if you don't want to put money into the game, then you will need a lot of patience, and dedication, or luck. Getting in a decent guild will give you more power, and really makes the game fun when you have a good community to help you. The best profession to get to 25 in my opinion is jewel crafting, because of the epic rings, belts, and waists that are all worth over 50K AD currently. For specific builds online, I would recommend mmominds.com for them. There are also plenty of ways to flip items in the auction house, and saving and holding items you think would be worth far more down the road can reap you huge benefits. For example, a lightning enchantment was worth 20K AD less than a year ago, now they are worth over 700K. For a good companion I would recommend getting a con artist. They are cheap and have 3 ring slots, which you can give him all the double slotted rings you will be getting once at 70. A healer companion is good for PVE at your level, but once you have decent life steal I would switch it to any companion that buffs/debuffs, such as the Fire Archon, Rust Monster, and Yeti. If you have any questions just reply and I will be happy to help. I am on Neverwinter almost every day, and you can friend request me if you like.

I currently run a 3.9k dc, converting to full dps with the 2x to event. I currently use an legendary healer and I like it. If that's the companion you want to upgrade then go for it, but I would recommend using upgrade tokens instead of ad to do it
