Illusionist's Gambit an honest review

First off I'd like to say that the new skirmish does have its fun points. It's new, something to do and does not require a key, which is great. I'd like to discuss some things that I've talked about with fellow guild members, streamers and random players. I've put a lot of time into the skirmish since release. I have over 16k abandoned treasures which have mostly come from the skirmish. So here is an honest review of things I (and many others) all agree on.

1. Companion gear. This is the main reason we are here. The skirmish drops some amazing companion gear that we all desperately need since the closing of gateway. But, there is a big problem. The gear we want...does not drop. I've ran this many times and have yet to get anything i can use on my fire archon as a dps build. I've gotten 2 +4 defense rings, and i believe 3 +4 defense belts. Now, this normally wouldn't be an issue but the problem is it's account bound. I can't sell it, so it turns into salvage. Suggestion, either increase the drop rates of +4's so more offensive rings, talismans, etc drop or make them bind on equip so we can sell them. If they are bound to account, they should be dropping very frequently..i should be overflowing in +4s. Please consider this change.

2. Reflect damage. The issue here isn't that it exists, its the fact that we can barely tell which enemies are reflecting. Can you make an adjustment to color, size, etc? So we can tell the difference and actually stay alive. Also, if an enemy is engaged during this part and is not reflecting damage, they should not switch to a reflecting damage type. Spending 10 min to get to this point then failing because the enemies are changing while you are attacking is extremely frustrating.

3. Length of the skirmish. This skirmish is just too long for the rewards it offers. If it was more rewarding in terms of companion gear then we wouldn't mind the grind. I just did 6 skirmishes and it took about 1.6 hours. This is a laughable time. Between the ice floor slowing us down, having to wait for reflect damage, etc this is a huge time killer. Is there anyway to speed this up? I play with people who have loyal/adorable bites gear and they won't go near this thing cause of the length and lack of rewards.

TL;DR
drop more companion +4 gear, make reflect enemies more noticeable, skirmish too long for current rewards.

One last thing, when I watched the state of the game I noticed Mimic King said that as a developer he doesn't want the players having the best gear in the game. This made a lot of people upset. I see players leaving everyday...not just players who have spent a lot of money on this game...but also players that ENJOY this game. Anyone who plays neverwinter can tell you that the drop rates on BIS gear aren't great. Relic armor in FBI is almost non-existent, and when we get it, we don't wear it cause of the empowerment issue (that's a whole other topic though lol).

So in short, please don't make us suffer through hours and hours and days and days of this skirmish for good companion gear, we just want to play, have fun and get the gear we need to be better at playing the game we love.

If it would give more RAD, as the other skirmishes, it would be bearable. As it is, it is a waste of time, imo.

I recently found a way to make losing my pet's defence slots and arpen work for my build with a little gear reshuffling so now I'm probably going to spam this skirmish for the foreseeable to get some double offensive slot gear, so I'm kinda concerned that the +4s are now the new under dark rings, in that there are so many kinds that the chances of the ones you want dropping are minimal.

Given the frustration this has already caused in the past with the underdark mod... it would be nice if there was either an exchange vendor, or a choice given at the end of the skirmish as to which type you receive.

We've all been very good dogs, throw us a bone here.

I second most of the stuff said here. It's a nice design in theory, but as a CW I mainly stand in the middle of the platform and spam buttons left and right. I could literally just use a macro and would be as effective. Hey, and nobody would even notice! I was very positive going into the mod about the skirmish, but I simply can't do more than one or two in a row. It's just that boring.

Rewards: They never learn. Or well that's probably incorrect. I'm absolutely positive they could do an exchange vendor or choice pack, but for some reason they think shitting RNG all over the place makes for a great game. They are probably so deep into RNG that they shuffle desks each morning in the office and randomly switch wifes and husbands in the evening. Are you getting Legendary Lisa or Common Cole? Excitement!

On a more serious note: Shaking my head, but it's not likely to change. There are six different stat combinations and seven (?) types of gear. So you've got a solid 1/42 shot to get the gear you want on top of the percentage of even getting a +4.
Holy fuckaroni. I guess there's a reason why you see very little requests for the skirmish. Those that already own decent companion gear can gladly avoid it altogether and those that need it for the weapons just spam 35 bronze completions.

I'd gladly trade all the fleeces i've got (30+) for one +4. At least it would give me a guaranteed loot and not to entirely rely on RNG.

i agree that an exchange vendor for the skirmish as well as SVA would be a complete game changer. Make the players happy with ring exchanges. Underdark as well would be great.

I love playing this game. It's funny, now that i have all my marks from Msva i actually enjoy doing it for the the challenge. I just wish it was more rewarding with easier to get keys. That way more people will play it.

Please give us exchange vendors! pretty please? with sugar on top?
  • mightyerikssonmightyeriksson Member Posts: 842 Arc User
Exchange-vendors for Underdark +5 rings, MSVA marks and Companion gear would give many players a lot more positive attitude towards the game.

What little revenue Cryptic would lose in LD keys sales, I'm fairly sure they would more than make up for in enchanted keys and whatnot, simply due to the fact that happy players tend to spend more than frustrated players...

All I have to say in regards to this skirmish is 12 runs completed 12 +1 pieces of garbage companion gear. That is all. Thank you.

I think it's the best skirmish and doesn't take even remotely to long. You just said 6 in 1 and a half hours, thats under 20 minutes a skirmish. The heck do you want, 5 minute ones? Luckily neverwinter has never been about instant gratification, but working for what you want, even if that takes a very long time. And I love that about this game.

your version of garauntee and mine must be different :P In this case if you keep running it you WILL get what you want, garaunteed. Whether its tomorrow or next year is the question. Just another example of wanting it when you want it :P

There are 48 different +4s (and 240 different drops overall). So getting the right +4 from the skirmish probably has worse odds than getting a +5 that you want out of demogorgon.

I agree with the original poster. The skrimish, in my opinion, is a waste of time. I don't even bother with it anymore due to the fact the rewards are not worth having. At this point I use normal gear for my pets just to have something slotted. If I suffer from stats? Oh well I'll just hit the monster until I can kill it, persay. I've done multiple runs as well and I never have seen a +4 gear so reading upon other posts from people saying they have? Actually surprised me. I truly thought you guys purposely didn't include +4 or +5 gear. At the end of the day? I won't be running that skrimish so often anymore.

This is The reason why I stay out of there.
If the droprate were 1/240 for each and every companion item I might consider going there,
but as the drop rate is more likely:
    70% green
    25% blue
    4% purple
    1% legendary
is is close to impossible to get the items (e.g. +4 GWF OH with power and crit) I want.
The only thing working in my favor (at least this time) is the usual abysmal droprate of +5's.

The old companion gear from SCA were much easier and faster to obtain. And could be sold.

Wait.. I don't have to stay for gold to get my silk or whatever? Darn... So many hours wasted.

Edit: the reflect damage mechanic seems to be broken imo, perhaps only for certain class'/builds/enchantments or whatever.
For my Bile wielding MoF, it very much feels like mod 6 all over again.

still no +4 gear from skirmish since original post. i feel like they nerfed the drop rate actually. i haven't even seen, or heard of anyone getting any since week 1.
  • jonkocajonkoca Member, NW M9 Playtest Posts: 2,586 Arc User
Same here, first day or two, got a couple of +4s and derp, salvaged them because I thought "meh I need the AD" and now, can't get any for love nor money. I really hate the classic cryptic rng policy of - first couple of days let them drop like rain, get the punters interested, then pow!!! Nerfbat the rng down to 0.001.

You'd think I'd have learned by now, but I never do....

I'm amazed that the devs fail to see their mistake here. Most players do not actually need to run the skirmish, because they either have equal gear already or use ring-heavy companions that can be geared elsewhere. This content's purpose was to give players more opportunities and a wider range of companions to use, but as currently designed it's doing nothing.

Ok. I ve read all the texts here and couldnt stop myself from writing this.
If u play this game dreaming about the items and builds u want to have, u will never get them. They give us a mod per 2-3 months and now with a-b system it will only get worse. There is no way to reach the dream character sheet without PAYING real cash for the bind on equip items, so that u can farm bind on character or account items with your in game time. This is what they have been doing since module 1, the neverwinter. This is their selling point, this is their strategy and no matter what you do, how much u complain, this will never change. NEVER. End of story.

On a sidenote, I am totally agreed with you guys here, but I am over the times that I believe things could change, no they will not. If you are lucky u get your +5 or +4 or whatever, other than that we will just complain.

I heard a guy saying u will get what u want GUARENTEED in a week or in a year? I am really sorry but u couldnt be more wrong with this sttuuuuuupppiiid idea. Once you get what you want it will probably be useless, and I am telling you, there will be a level 80 patch coming, and all of ours gears will be wasted other than enchantments, along with the time we invested on them.

Long story short, stop critisizing and play, or just quit the game because this game will never change =)

I just wish there was a discernible difference in reward from doing the 15 minute 3 round IG versus the 4 minute 1 rounder. I've probably done the 3 round one 20+ times, and never seen better than a piece of +2 gear, typically +1. Feels very disrespectful of my time to keep getting +1 rewards.

To me it is simply something else to do when bored with a chance (slim) at getting something worthwhile and now a little AD. Not worth grinding out except for the Weapon regents needed, if that is your thing.

I just noticed, that the fleece is BTC, so I cant even grind the skirmish on all my chars and earn some RAD, while I struggle to keep awake doing my XXth run for them materials.

Making fleece BTC is just plain stupid. There is no time gate (like arcane focus) that would be rendered useless. Run the skirmish, get one fleece, rinse and repeat, until you get your weapon. Binding this to a char has no effect besides pissing players off, imo.
