Returning player questions

Hi,

I quit Neverwinter back in February or so and I was thinking about giving it another go. I've been looking around online to see what stuff is new and I thought I'd ask if anyone could give me the broad strokes of it?

When last I played I was doing that Dragon Boss whenever I could and some Black Dungeon thingy I can't remember what was called, it looked like a haunted house almost. I was having fun but I felt the monetization was a bit nuts at the time with progression and gearscore was king and took a significant investment to get to a good level.

Anyway, I really wanted to go into PvP more but I ended up getting really depressed and quitting since it would essentially require half a years worth of constant grinding before I could effectively participate without being free meat to everyone. Not saying I expect everything for free, just the way it was structured and the lack of attention to PvP was a bit disheartening.

So, has the PvP/Arena system been improved at all for example? Last I remember we were all kinda upset because it seemed like they didn't pay attention to it at all.

Is the new PvE stuff any good?

Thanks!

EDIT: Should add that my main classes were Guardian Fighter and Hunter Ranger.

Sorry to say, but the game has not improved since February in any way that would address the concerns you voiced. If anything, those aspects have gotten worse and/or more pronounced.

There has been a lot of new and somewhat interesting content this year, but again, nothing that improved the underlying player experience when it comes to pvp (especially), the grind wall (which has gotten MUCH worse), or the rampant over-monetization (also much worse) which appeared to be the main things that drove you to quit.

Assassin's Creed III is free from Ubisoft this month. Go download it and give NW a pass :)

I understand your position, I've adviced people against playing certain games many times as well. I recently found out that the Gateway is gone which made me sad... I liked that minigame. Plus I spent real money on companions to get better at it so that sucks too...

As for the game itself... Uff. It feels good. Though combat is limited due to the number of skills it just felt good. I still remember seeing Totalbiscuits intro of it with the devs a long time ago as well as playing at launch. It's sad it turned out like this. They've basically completely moved away from what they were back then and how they acted in that vid. They cared about players, about the game. And they've traded long term success of a solid player base for a short term gain (aka cashgrab) that I never expected from a western dev.

Still... rewatching TB play the game with the devs makes me sad. I played at launch with my friends, I did lots of PvP, the game just felt good and the dev trustworthy. And the setting, it was almost magical to me being a D&D fan, wandering these dungeons, finding secrets. Uff... I still like this game and respect it. Not for what it is but for what it could have been. And what it was, in a way, originally.

There is still plenty to like about this game, try not to focus solely on the negatives.

To be clear - the specific points the OP mentioned have not improved. I wasn't focusing on negatives, merely providing my view of the game relative to the three items he mentioned drive him to quit.

There are some good points to NW. The overall combat and movement mechanics remain unparalleled in the MMO genre. The 1-60 leveling / story missions are a lot of fun (maybe not the 20th time through... but still).

On balance, though, I can't really say the game is really "better" now than it was a year ago. All I can really say is that there's a lot more to do than there was a year ago... "to do" could also be written "to grind" to be more accurate.

I enjoy the game more than I did a year ago, so I will say it is better for a counter viewpoint.
I am not BIS, but those players are hardly ever happy. If I was I might not be because there is not a lot to do at that point. It will take a long time to get there though.

For PvP, the best weapons/offhands are available via PvE now, and once you open up Svardborg it really isn't all that hard to upgrade them with all the marks/refinement you get from it...

Sure it's a grind, but that's part and parcel of the game.

Hope that helps a bit! :)
