How to mute your own mic in game?

Hello, newb here. I just realized I've been playing for about a month with my kinect mic on. :s So I was wondering if there was a way to mute your own mic in the game? I know you can turn the kinect mic off, but I don't really want to do that if I can avoid it. also If I do turn it off at the kinect level, will a headset still work?

    I'm pretty sure there's a setting in options to turn off voice chat.

    double tap guide button > settings > Kinect mic for chat > Off
    Main - IccyAsd Lvl70 (GF 4249)
    Alt - Freaya Lvl70 (CW 33XX)
