[PS4]Understanding companions and threat

shontsushontsu Member Posts: 99 Arc User
Been reading guides trying to figure which companions I want/need. I see advice for Shieldmaiden (due to long lunge range so she can proc bonding from a distance), but quickly worked out she was pulling threat from me. No big deal out questing, but I doubt I want this in a group dungeon right? Likewise I see a lot of people suggesting portal hound, but just checked it out and it comes with a taunt. Wouldn't this have the same problem? Am I missing something? What should I be looking for in a companion?
Yes, there's a thread just below on recommended companions, but same issue, trying to figure out how to evaluate the recommendations.

Sometimes you need a breather and for those few seconds on certain bosses it helps.

Only problem is when you are with melee party members and the pet causes the boss to turn. So tank on the side the pets went in and have everyone else spread round sides/back and you will have no issues.

The things you should look for in a companion now days depends on your stats what feat tree you are going into and your armour enchant.

Don't have p. negation + 50% damage resistance? Look into a companion with defense slots/bondings.

Decided you wanted to do a bit more damage and your defense is looking good? Look into offensive companions that give %dmg boost like siege/archons or critical Serv like eriyes/dancing blade.

Want to take a bit less damage but don't want to give up tank/debuffs companion? Take a lion/rust monster.

It's all about what works for you, your gear and where you plan to build your character to. This isn't an easy answer and one you should decide for yourself by playing. See which would have the most beneficial effect on Your toon.
  • Those are good answers so far.

I recently changed from an Ioun Stone to a companion with bondings. I went with the portal hound. So far I am pleased, but after mod 10 hits it may be too much damage resistance.

If by the time Mod 10 hits my DR is too high, I will swap out for something with a mix of defensive and offensive slots.

It's still a cool companion though. Sharing aggro frustrates me. As was mentioned, allies get caught when the boss turns.

Yes agree, good answers all. Thanks, makes things clearer. I'll work through some options and try to figure out which I'd like most as my first bonding companion.
