learn to do pick ups dps

mebengalsfan#9264 mebengalsfan Member Posts: 3,169 Arc User
Was in Lostsmouth yesterday healing, my guild mate was tanking.

Here is how the run went.

1st Boss: I did 3 picks up, for each DPS. We beat the boss no problem. DPS were not moving out of the strong strike zone.
2nd Boss 1st Attempt: I got targeted immediately and went down. I was near 2 DPS and no one picked me up. Group Wiped.

I placed into Group Chat, please do pick up, especially if it is the healer or tank.

2nd Boss 2nd Attempt: I do 2 more DPS pick ups and my guild mate did not put up his blue bubble which resulted in him going down. A DPS right next to him runs away. I have to slide all the way to him and pick him up. We beat the 2nd boss.

I palced into Group chat, please do pick up, especially if it is the healer or tank.

Lostmouth: We get his life 1/4 of the way down and the lava fills up the room while I was in the mist of a pick up, I died and the group was not able to get me and within group chat this message pops up.

"Where are the heals? I got no heals after the lava."

Kinda hard to heal players when I'm out of the fight.

Top DPS leaves as other DPS are only producing 40% of his damage. We get another low damaging DPS. I adjust my abilities as the DPS suck that bad.

Again, we get his health 1/4 of the way down. This time I got hit and knocked pretty far back into the lava. I used AA and got myself to the very edge so a DPS could pick me up. I'm literally next to a DPS waiting to be picked up. No one picked up the healer.

Guild Mate to me in PSN chat: "Dude they are trying to kick you!"

In Group Chat: "Where are the heals? I'm not getting healed."

Now the times anyone was not getting a heal was when I was doing picks up out of the fight because no one picked me up.

I put into group chat: "You are horrible players and DPS. Seriously you fail to understand the importance of picking up your healer. You focus on your damage, which isn't all that good by the way, and complain about heals when you are standing next to me when I'm down. Also, kicking a support role player that has the tank as a guild mate, best of luck."

We both left. This has been an ongoing experience for me and my guild mate. I get complaints about my heals when players are not avoiding the strong strikes zones. I don't care how OP you are, if you are not a tank standing in the red zone usually means death.

Also, DPS should be doing the pick up, there are 3 of you and one of you can easily stop whatever you are doing and pick up a down healer or tank.

The struggles of playing support roles in MMOs. DPS selfish players vs. those of us doing what we do for the group. And you know what, those selfish players are the first to start a kick when they are the ones that need to be kicked.

When my guild mate told me I was getting kicked we both laughed. I'm like they must not know how to read as we are both in the same guild. LOL. Good way to get your tank to leave as well. LOL.

I always pick people up when I can. The problem I have is I don't see when people go down unless they are in my line of sight. I always miss them calling for help in the chat. I'm getting a little better at watching for the help call and it says dying by their name but I miss that too.

It would help me a lot of there was a distinct sound when someone goes down or a better visual cue. Get rid of that stupid loot window or it telling me someone won a legendary item and flash that a player is down on the screen.

ever think to maybe communicate? Maybe players felt it was the healers job to do pick ups, like in most games where healers revive. who knows maybe they didn't know you can revive other players. maybe they didn't see the message?

this game has weird text chat set up between queue group group, group chat.

pro tip though... be the better person. Don't sink down to baddies level just makes you out to be the bad guy.

We tried to kick the healer once, he wouldn't heal and kept getting himself killed, and killing us in the process. He was running ahead of the group, running across every trap on the board, aggroing everything then running back to us as he dropped dead. We tried over and over to kick but it wouldn't work. so we just left him down to keep him from causing us more issues. He cursed us up and down claiming the DPS couldn't DPS, that the tank sucked etc. WORST healer I have encountered.

(And no he wasn't a DPS or Buff/Debuffer) we watched to make sure he was actually set up as a healer.

So yeah - sometimes you have to kick the healer.

Playing as a DC I find healing to be easy in most cases. Time I cannot heal is when a player stands in one shot zone. I even have a daily slotted for those type of players and I used it last night but when a players stand in lava and doesn't move, how can I heal through that. I can't. Said player was the one who started the kick.

Rule #1 for me as a healer, Can't Heal Stupid.

Last night run showed me one thing and it did not surprise me one bit; players in NW are no better than the pugs I ran with in DCUO.

With all the LB's I have opened I have plenty of stuff for a CW, which I may make soon enough as I'm tired of carrying players who simply don't want to learn mechanics.

If you're looking for pug dps, put an ilvl requirement, 2200 seems to be fine

I understand completely! PUGs are always exciting - and not always in a good way.

I had my first experience trying to PUG as a healer with my Pally in the CTA. I'm not sure what was happening but it was the LONGEST CTA ever. My friends finished a dungeon before I was done with it. I am set up as total healer - the only damage I do is whack something with mace for about 1k-2K damage.

I was top healer, top tank, top DPS - the only thing I didn't get first on was #of deaths. I have no idea what was happening but I would never take my pally into somewhere that I thought I would have to solo because even though she doesn't die - she doesn't kill either.

I'm pretty sure those spiders died of natural causes rather than my mace. It was awful.

I agree with this. However, keep in mind this has been a thing in mmo's for a looong time. As long as there are stupid people on the internet this will keep happening.

The reverse can happen too by the way. A dps goes down and myself (dps) go to rez him. Halfway through the rez I see our healer run over and start rezzing. Tank gets no heals at a crucial moment, tank goes down. Group eventually wipes.

The way I look at it - Unless you are directly keeping someone alive, OR there is no way you can make it to a downed teammate, PICK THEM UP.

I pick up strangers I run across, it's really not that hard.

One thing I have noticed on console-MMOs, when compared to years of PC-MMO-Gaming, console players do not seem to "get it".
I think we just need to educate them...and have some patience.
Let's "try" to not turn "toxic" just because they (console players) are (for the most part) very new to the whole "MMO Experience".

But...that's just my personal philosophy. ;)

I am sorry that happened. I am trying to get into a good guild to avoid this myself. I stopped going into queues for dungeons because this is such a problem.

I don't understand how people can't avoid something that is so clearly highlighted in red.
I play as a dps myself and always move to pick up whomever I can.

I am at 2000il, play as a TR executioner, so if you need a dps let me know.

You could always just use trade bars to buy scrolls of life. That way if they don't revive you, then you can just revive yourself

Im getting the same issues though, Did most the ps4 players come from dcuo online? Im seeing a huge disconnect on players va roles. I ran 3-man dungeons and 1-2 people just bum rush forward even skipping mob which then aggro me, people run across traps. Heck sometimes I load up but not really in the group.
As in how to use my skills to establish threat, and skills to maintain(sp) it, and it can be jarring to see a groups "healer" or "dps" have a pissing contest on who can get to the mobs first.

had a run in cragmire crypts where a dc and sw were using their dodge/movement skills to race each other to get to mobs first.

im sitting here as a tank getting their left over mobs on my HAMSTER and no one stopping a sec to communicate anything.

kinda sad that people shrug off grouping up like this now a days. shame cuz you get better results if people work together.

I refuse to try and pug anything other than skirmishes or kessels these days it's too frustrating playing with pugs who don't play a role properly or work as a team.
  • When I first started I didn't realise that any role can pick a downed player up, had been playing Final Fantasy XIV so was used to only healers picking people up. Obviously once I Noticed that I could pick people up I will try to pick players up. The problem is that it's hard to notice a downed player, especially ones that don't even call for help, when in the middle of a fight.

I feel there should be a way to make it more noticeable that a player has gone down because unless you are right next to me I may not see it, I play a TR so am more focused on watching for AOE markers and dodging than if someone has gone down. Also due to how close the FoV is it's hard to see anyone that's around me go down, I wish there was an FoV slider in the options so I could zoom it out a bit (and as far as I can tell console commands only work for PC). Then if the loot Windows didn't take up a lot of the screen would help also, or if they were more transparent.

One last thing I have to mention is, due to me not playing DCUO, was this sort of thing overly prevalent in DCUO? It's just if it was that just goes to show that a lot of PS4 players don't have a clue on games outside of FPS and single player RPG games. I mean I watched a tank come over to player that was trapped by the hand in VT so they could DPS it, obviously bringing the couple ads with them, which ended up killing the player trapped in the hand.

Sorry for rambling a bit just couldn't help myself.

Why are you even the little bit surprised at this?? You've played DCUO long enough to know that most console players prefer to DPS and ONLY DPS as taking the time to actually be a halfway decent team player by doing pick-ups will stop them coming first on the scoreboard :(
  • derio#3255 derio Member Posts: 32 Arc User
Exactly what was stated above. If players are coming from ffxiv then they are used to the healers picking up people as they were the only class besides SMN who could do such a thing.

However pug groups Cannot be trusted so LFG is usually always the best option

This wears me out. Ilvl=/=skill. You're rolling the dice with all pugs. It's kinda like the slow people I knew growing up- sure they got college degrees but I don't want 'em teaching my kids

As the tank when i see that happen ill stop and drag every single monster, the boss everything over and pick you up. They don't like that? well then they can get the next one

Just start a rumor that you get better odds for loot if you pick up the most people in a dungeon.
  • jedimaster91#2927 jedimaster91 Member Posts: 14 Arc User
I played a controller in DCUO so I'm used to being the one doing pickups. If I can get to you, I'll pick you up. But I'm not running into the middle of a mob to do it cuz that just gets us both killed. I'm a rogue and I'm squishy, lol. I also didn't need a tutorial to tell me red = death. I thought that was pretty much standard that you don't want to stand in it.

And yes, pug groups are like this in pretty much every MMO. The raging in DC was epic at times. I always loved it so when dps would scream at me for not giving enough power/mana and I'm like, Dudebro, healer and tank are my priorities. Without them you die. Drink a potion and quit emptying you bar in 0.2 seconds. But I digress.

Oh yes the "pleasure" to run with an pug party.^^

You people will often have these "Oh Gosh what are they doing?" feels in an pug party, so my tipps are more for guildruns:

    - picking up people, DC and the tank (GF or OP) are not the ideal classes for doing these, DC has to heal (later on more buff/debuff), Tank has to hold aggro against adds or bosses.
    - CW, HR, SW, GWF has an high aggro gain, so it makes no sense that these classes try to pick up people, especially if the Tank has to struggle holding aggro.
    - TR has a very low aggro management, so he is the ideal Class in picking up people, and he could CC an add group with smokebomb, to maximise the chance doing these without dying.
    - If you have no TR in the party, the CW or HR (Trapper) should CC the adds, meanwhile the GWF should try picking up, bc with unstoppable active he has also a higher chance to survive.
    - SW is for me the last class, try to pickup people, too squishy and very low CC abilitys in most guides i know.

The thing is, with normal ilvl 2k up to 2.5k the party need much more heal and CC being succesful in an dungeon, with 2.5k up to 3k you can start bringing in more buff and debuff abilitys (especially GF and DC) to the party, 3k+ uhm well you shouldn't have any problems anymore^^.

@talon1970 to add to this the TR can pick up people while in stealth and remain in stealth the entire time for the pick up.

I get complaints about my heals when players are not avoiding the strong strikes zones. I don't care how OP you are, if you are not a tank standing in the red zone usually means death.

LOL, about a week after I started this game my son (21, long time WoW and GW player) was in the room as I was playing and asking about how it was. He played a little on PC before it went to console. Anyway, I am pugging (as I always do) a dungeon and chatting with him at the same time. I then start talking about how I need to learn how to play the different roles (DPS etc) since this is my first MMO, and he says something to the extent of "well you are pretty good at playing an MMO. I wish most of the people I get grouped with on WoW were as good as you."

Now, to put this in context, we have a very open and honest relationship and don't mince words when ribbing each other about our gaming abilities. He and I are pretty much in agreement that I am a fair to poor player of shooters or any 1st/3rd person combat games, and he makes his comments accordingly (like not suggesting I play Darksouls). So I know he is not blowing smoke up my keester.

I replied to him something about how as a DPS (SW) I know I am not getting as high as a damage as other players expect. He says, "yea, but you move out of the red zones before you get hit. You would be surprised at how many high level instances I pug in where most of the non-tank players just stand there when they are in red. If your DPS is lower than it could be, but you are actively trying to avoid being hit by powerful attacks, you are better at this than a lot of people."

That kind of surprised me. That is the entire point of the red areas to begin with, and I have read a lot of complaints about tier 1 Epics on PS4 being bugged so as to not have them for AoE (some are fixed now), so why would you stand there and be stomped if you can help it? Sometimes I squander my stamina so I can't get out of the biggest AoE in time (I am also a little heavy on that thumbstick), but I would always rather I didn't get hit than get hit. If I can do it while carrying on a conversation with someone then it shouldn't be all that hard.

I want to be clear, I am not good at this type of game in a lot of ways, but I guess it never occurred to me to just stand there, especially since I am actually pleasantly surprised me when I get picked up. Most of the time it doesn't happen. I guess I just don't know what to expect.

Worst thing I have seen is terrible dps. I play a GF and I am even buffing the team dps and I still see them with half my dps numbers. And they don't even try to pick up other players. It's a big reason why lfg GS restrictions are so strict
