Would upgrading my helaer companion for 40l AD be a good investment?

He is dying a lot and I don't know how else to get a better healer.

The free one is the weakest one. And for dps I prefer to use tank companion

For upgrading your companions it depends. Based on a video i watched if you are trying to upgrade them to blue or higher then you should check the auction house because people usually sell companions for a lot cheaper AD than you just upgrading them yourself. Also you should only upgrade them to purple quality and only upgrade your main companion to legendary since the stats they give you do not increase at legendary rank.

As for all the healer companions you can view all the companions in the game from the collection menu

I've tried several healers and to be honest, the one I find the most useful is the free one. The ones I've tried either just give you some extra HP (which I dont find really useful as a warlock) or are really stingy with regular heals like the faithful initiate.

No... Not for that companion. Once you hit end content you will be mainly running with 5 man and one will be healer. Most content should be soloable unless heroic encounters, which a compion will not help you solo it unless StrongHold.

I play a TR and tried using the free healer, I found that it picked more fights than it was worth and didn't heal me very much. It was more beneficial to use the dog or a tank or a striker for me just so that they would take some of the aggro off.

I'm told that the dread knight (not sure I'm using the right name) is the best healer because he attacks and has life steal, which he shares with you.

I'd love to give him a shot since he looks awesome but unless you're a tank that increased threat bonus will wreck you.
