So, I've noticed something really strange... when you return to the character selection screen it seems the selected character is the character you had logged in TWO logins ago instead of the character you just had logged in.
Could this be fixed so the selected character when you return to the character select screen is actually the character you just had logged in instead of the character you had logged in some time before?

1) yes it does do the chosen character from 2 "logins" or character change screen previous
2) it should by most game selection mechanics meet to the standard of = what I logged in with it will show what I went to character selection from. If I log in with my Pally Drogo, then it should show Drogo upon character change not Dear John the TR.
3) I noticed this issue close to a year ago, maybe even further back, but never mentioned anything as I could not recall when it started. Also had nothing substantial to support with unless I did a possible Screen Share/Login - logout screen video showing this issue. (my apologies for being lazy to make the video).
I do doubt a change will occur to this, yet, as it does not cause an exploit or other flaw that makes this of precedence of changes/bug fixes necessary to be made by Cryptic currently on their list. (taking a guess at it being a list as there are issues still yet to be repaired/recoded that have been stated by the community).
Sadly it's an inconvenience at this time for the players like you and I who have 3+ toons to jump thru.
Glad someone else noticed this issue. Thank you @samaka#2511
Hopefully some day this issue could be fixed, from a programming standpoint it may be as simple as changing a +1 to a -1.
Thanks for replying.

I would think then that changing maps must update whatever data structure holds our character login history, so maybe just adding a refresh like the map change forces could fix the issue.
Hopefully one day someone could look into this issue, while it is not a major bug by any definition it would be a nice QoL fix to have... especially given that the behavior of every MMO I have played before this one, and even this one if you change maps, does what is expected!
