Guardian Fighter or Oathbound Paladin?

So even though this applies to all three platforms I felt it be a bit more important shared here simply because of new players wondering which of the two tanks is the best? Now spoiler alert I'm gonna say both are equally fine to play it is personal preference and i'm going to give a very broad overlook at what can be brought to the table with both classes this is not in depth but to give you an idea of which class does what.

Oath bound paladin can help with healing along with tanking.

GF has an edge. The pally just can't hold threat like the GF can. I agree both are fine and I would run a dungeon with either, but if I have a choice I would pick a GF every time.

The main differences between the two are healing (Paladin) and aggro (Guardian Fighter). I find the Guardian Fighter can do more damage up front than the Paladin, but I prefer using the Paladin over the Guardian fighter because I like to heal and I like the Paladin buffs more.

    Guardian fighter:
    - Better aggro.
    - Perma 50% incoming damage resistance for team mates as long as knight's valor is active.
    2. Into the fray's buff changes less than bane does as it doesn't need stacks, this will be especially true after it gets fixed.
    3. Faster movement speed thanks to into the fray (paladins are painfully slow ) which has a decent uptime and a relatively short cooldown.
    4. You really need to understand bosses' and enemies' attacking patterns so you develop a good understanding of the game and the other classes, making you a good player.

    Paladin:
    - Very straightforward here, this class and path is brain dead easy, it takes little to no time to "master" and because of available encounter powers you seldom if ever will have to try your best to complete a dungeon.
    - Can take extreme amounts of damage like is nothing without even using the shield which is a cosmetic item most the time.
    - Can heal team mates.
    - Gets a damage resistance bonus from constitution stat.

Jaime - I appreciate your breakdown of the classes. Do you have a particular guide or reference I can see for what feats to choose for a GF tank with those mentioned powers/style?

I'm LOVING my Oathbound Paladin but it does feel a tad simple even for a tank. But it is a lot of fun to play as. As listed above OP's have a lot of variety to them and can branch out pretty nicely. GF's hold aggro way better though and kind of can be seen as a real true tank. OP's basically are a jack of all trades tank (how I see them) but a master of none.

I just wish the Paladin offered more than smite for a dependable striking encounter power.

divine wrath has been working great for me as a encounter pally power. does good damage along with the buff for me it hits harder than smite it seems and to more targets

I hate this kind of talk "best character" it's a game and not a competition? Unless your in it for the PVP only. All the classes have there strengths and weakness. Only a a poor man blames his instrument, or in this case "gaming skills" pick your class and race based on your play style. And don't always obsess on the best. I really enjoy my GWF a lot. Don't be a stat monger, after all it's just a game. In the end game, it will come down to, who has the better gear anyways. And not skill, after all it is a MMO. IF that's the way you play the game? It sounds like your a scrub anyways , and have no real business gaming. That's my 2 cents.

Which of the two classes has the most engaging combat style? Which class benefits the most from playing smartly, making the right decisions in a fight etc etc (ie which is least forgiving)? I like melee and rescue other players, but if combat is too boring/easy/forgiving as a Paladin, than I might just stick with the Guardian Fighter. That being said, maybe GF isn't the right choice either, when it comes to high-risk-high-reword type of gameplay?

Paladin is brain dead easy, it is a little risk huge reward class that hardly uses the shield and it's hilariously tanky due to overpowered encounter powers, especially the god mode combo binding oath + templar's wrath that renders your shield pointless and a mere cosmetic item most the time.

Guardian fighter requires you to be concentrated in epic content and if you don't know what you're doing, enemies will mop the floor with you and bosses such as Orcus or Traven can instakill you if you don't manage your guard well (if you get hit with your shield down chances are you're toasted). Once you get experience as a gf, it becomes easy however you'll still be punished in those moments your concentration goes off or if you grow overconfident, oh and lag can be a factor as well.

I have both classes at level 70 and at least for me, when I run on my gf I really feel like I am a tank while with my other toon I feel like I am... paladining? With the gf what matters is positioning and stamina management, with the prot paladin you just need to mindlessly spam binding oath + templar's + 3rd power of your choice.

To answer your question, the paladin is more of a Rambo-yolo class that hardly needs or uses the shield and the guardian is far less forgiving. Just wait a few months so more people get to 70 and then compare the perfomance and survability of average paladins and guardian fighters, that way you'll get to see and understand my statements.

If you decide to run a guardian fighter, avoid steel defense like the plague, it makes tanking way too easy so you don't learn as much as you would without it.

Thanks for your insights. Maybe I will level up a Cleric instead of a Paladin then, when I want to support my Guild Group.
