I apologize for the generic title. I have recently noticed a big increase in CWs whenever I pug random groups. However, I can still count on one hand the number of random MoFs I have come across while I constantly come across SS CWs. I have nothing against SS CWs, just simply prefer to be a MoF. So to the MoFs I never come across, hopefully you stop by the forum and maybe compare notes:
1. Do you follow a build? Ironzerg, Burn With Me, How to Melt a Dragon, TheFabricant, etc etc? I began my MoF way back with Chem’s guide as I am sure many did back then. I used to be a Thaum but switched to Renegade about 4 months ago. Currently am a Renegade with Spell Twisting. I try to keep up with the PC guys as they have more experience than us Xbox people. However as a MoF, I have taken pieces from multiple guides to keep my character strong and fit my playstyle.
2. If you do not follow a guide, what paragon path did you choose?
3. Based off your path, are you a DPS, Support, Combo? Update: I switch between DPS and Buff/Debuffs DPS. My rotations are explained further down. I recently discovered that my best Class Feature setup is running Swath and Chilling Presence. It gives me the DPS I want along with helping the group DPS and in fact does better for my personal DPS than running any combo of Critical Conflagration.
4. Smolder: Being a MoF Renegade with Spell Twisting, I do pretty good in paingiver. Not the best obviously, but I hold my own. I constantly try different variations to switch out of Crit Conflagration and into Swath. Update: As of today, I believe my play style is comfortable enough to stop using Critical Conflagration and stick with a Swath/Chilling Presence combo. I use Scorching Burst to start smolder and keep it up with my rotation. After the Nerf, this so far has been my best result when dealing with smolder. It has also made a large impact on my personal DPS beating out the Crit Conflagration/Chilling Presence combo for personal DPS making it a win/win combo for me and the group. However I should note that my Shadow Demon is my bonding proccer and it's a hard hitting companion. That, I am sure, contributes also. So, how to you deal with smolder?
5. Companions: Update: For me 3 Archons (epic), an Eryness and my summoned Legendary Shadow Demon. My summoned pet uses R12 Bonding Stones. The Eryness makes up slightly for my abandoning of Critical Conflagration. You?
6. Weapon Enchant: As a Renegade, I have Abyss of Chaos. I run a Perfect Lightning enchant. I am unsure if I notice a difference with the Owlbear Pup, but either way, I enjoy using the lightning enchant with AoC. Update: After the Lostmauth Nerf, I switched to a Perfect Dread.from reading the materials that PC users post, having Abyss now isn't ideal. If and when I respec, I'll put those points into something else. You?
7. Your Rotation: CoI on RB with Steal Time, Disintegrate, and Icy Terrain. It’s kind of a basic load out. When I ran Drifting Embers, I used FtF instead of Steal Time. When doing bosses or dragons, I switch out Steal Time for RoE. As a Renegade, I sometimes switch everything out for quicker cooldown encounters just to proc Chaos Magic as many times as I can when in certain groups. You?
8. Lostmauth Set (if you use it): Update: Since the Nerf, I placed my full set into my bank. I decided not to exchange it. I already had a mythic Valindra Shard, so I am now running the full Valindra set. Definitely noticed the control help when soloing HEs in IWD. This also helps to keep me from having to go to Icy Veins. I use a Belial Stone in place of the Horn.
9. Mounts: Update: My previous goal was to get an Axe Beak. Using it has allowed me to switch out many other items in favor of power and critical while still maintaining 60% RI.
10. iLvl: What is yours? Update: I am only just over 3200ish. Most of my stones and such are refined for their next upgrade. I am just awaiting some GMOP to upgrade them.
11. Added: Artifacts: I use a Lantern, Valindra Shard, Belial Stone and CW Sigil. At some point I may switch the Lantern out for a wheel of elements, but I'll need to make up the lost Arm Pen. Also, the debuffs that the Lantern provides makes a difference for the group making me in no real rush to replace it. You?
12. Added: Vote Kicking. I still randomly get vote kicked even when I top the charts in random pugs. However, I have also noticed more groups that I join who are stuck in certain dungeons are at least willing to give it a shot even when they prefer a tank or healer (and we usually make it). So it's been a nice balance since the Nerf. Do you get vote kicked less, more, or no noticeable change compared to what you used to experience.
The combination of Feats, Class Features, Powers, Companions, Artifacts, Playstyle etc etc play a big role in CWs effectiveness (as I am sure it does with all classes). My basic curiousness is about how current MoFs feel about their characters. Do you enjoy being one? Do you try to change your character to improve you effectiveness for soloing or groups? What are your current goals with your character?
For me: I was able to upgrade my twisted set to legendary, get my Axe beak, and upgrade many enchants. I guess my current goals are to work on the rest of my Valindra Set and improve my insignia on the rest of my stable mounts.
Closing: I am a MoF CW and have enjoyed being one ever since I began playing this game last summer. I am no superstar DPS, but hold my own very well in groups and when soloing along with providing decent group benefits. With all of the changes Neverwinter has gone through over the years, I still enjoy playing the game and do not plan to leave it any time soon. I honestly get the most enjoyment when I random pug groups and run with a CW who destroys me in every category. Unfortunately it is happening less and less, but It gives me something to strive for. Where does your MoF stand in this game? I would love to learn more from those who don’t random pug and those PC players who have maintained a MoF throughout their time with this game. I am sure that I will have more questions and appreciate anyone input along with your patience. I am sure these questions and threads like this have popped up from time to time. My hope is for MoFs to have more and more knowledge about our class.
I also run a MOF CW. I've been stubborn with it and tweaking it for almost a year now. It's always good to see the other MOF's out there. If you ever want to run, PVP, or just compare notes, shoot me an invite. Cogburn@martyrmyself.
I am a 3700gs MOF.I run mostly pve because i like the grind, and because of work schedule. Right now I run thaum opressor, but also have a renegade thaum build I like. I run vorpal for dps, and a plaguefire for buff/dps. Running the plaguefire hurts a little dps but speeds dungeon runs up. I always keep ftf on over anything else. I also run some unconventional rotations sometimes. You can add me and we can run some dungeons. HOODY HOO@BKILLA66xKOAx
Cool beans. It's nice that we 3 run different builds. I added you two. Hopefully one day we will all be on at the same time and can run a dungeon or two to compare builds. BTW, would either of you mind if I post results here in this thread of our findings (if any)?
Yea im cool with that, i actually switched to rene/thaum with plaguefire yesterday to give a little bit more buffs while running edemo, theres so much dps in my guild it doesnt hurt to take mine down a notch to help speed things up. Ill be on after the server is back up today.
I saw you on earlier but didn't have time to do some runs. I usually jump on every day to at least run my dailies. You can inv me anytime you are free and see me on.
1. No guide followed, been running MoF since I rolled my CW pre mod5. 2. I always come back to thaum. Right now it's a thaum oppressor blend 3. Support DPS/boss killer. 4. Smolder is the primary mechanic for MoF. As such, it's my first priority, I always run Swath for the relatively large DPS buff for the entire party (Party DPS always trumps individual) and Crit Conflag for the synergy and extra crit severity. Not having bought the Erynies yet I'm sitting at 97% Crit Severity, thinking I can get that up to 100%. Chilling presence is nice, especially since I freeze everything that can be frozen instantly, but the overall party DPS is much higher than the personal DPS I lose not running chilling presence. And during boss fights I actually manage more DPS with Swath, provided it doesn't die too quickly. 5. I'm in the process of reworking these, but right now the main portion of this is an epic Yeti with Greater Bondings and a +2% CA companion. 6. Currently rebuilding a Fey after selling all my enchants prior to Coalgate. Since I'm unwilling to pay absurd prices it's currently only a normal. 7. Rotation depends on what I am trying to do. If it's trash/elite mobs it's usually Steal Time in the RB, Icy Terrain for CC, Fanning the Flame and Disintegrate. I also use Ice Knife for boss fights and the flaming pillar one for mob fights. Magic Missile and the other flame one for at wills, though with my ridiculous recharge times I rarely use At Wills. Steal Time in RB grants the party Combat Advantage, so if I'm running with an intelligent HR using Aspect of the Pack I sometimes trade this out. For "Boss fights" I run Ray of Enfeeblement in RB and swap Col in for Icy Terrain. Tiamat and Demo I run RoE in RB and keep Icy Terrain. 8. I don't use Lostmauth, because of the way they "fixed" it previously it does not trigger on a lot of spells that apply DoTs so doesn't work great for MoF. Currently running without a set bonus in PvE and use Black Ice in PvP to kill GFs, OPs, and Clerics. Also working on getting a Valindra set together (already use the neck) to play with. 9. I have a legacy Axe Beak, a Gond mount, Spider, and Dawn Unicorn plus a random blue from a long time ago. So I will be good to go for now, might swap things around later, I want to buy a zen mount with 2k lifesteal, 2k defense and 2k ArPen for all my toons to get what they need, so I'll have to decide if the insignia bonuses are better with whatever those end up being. 10. 2964. Yea, it's kinda killing me to be that close to 3k.
I love being MoF. The debuffs I bring to the table have a pretty significant effect to difficult fights. And I've managed to come in 2nd overall DPS in a gold run Demo before, which I don't really care about the personal DPS side but it's still nice to see yourself up there every once in a while. More impressively I've killed Lostmauth from half health after my entire team wiped in the lava rocks wave (back when I was 2700IL too!), so that's pretty cool.
Sorry, I just checked this again for the first time in a few days. But I'm down for a run for sure. And I have no issues with you posting the results. I'm actually curious to see how the other builds play off of one another. I'm about to get on now, I'll see if you guys are on.
NP im at work and wont be home for another week or so maybe youll be on then. Before i left i swapped to pure buff debuff, gonna stay that for awhile, i like it alot better, i feel like running thaum oppressor as MOF is a greedy build, but i can tell you i was OP as MOF thaum oppressor even to the point where it could be more powerful SS, i ran some unconventional things to do it but I was rarely out dpsd by any SS and the only one who could do it beat me by 1mill 1 time.

Unconventional things...List them please, I enjoy testing things outside of the norm.
Ok so when i say unconventional this is coming from other CWs ive pugged with or in guild who were runnin Thaum Oppressor and they were all doing the same things, where I was doing some things different. Im sure some of these different things are done by other CWs but when i mention them to them alot are skeptical on what i was doing. One was running ST tabbed for the CA and keeping my intellect and blink slotted. Alot of CWs ive run with who swapped to thaum opp unslotted their intellect and opted for a archon because i was told they dont get the CA like with renegade. I didnt agree with that so I gave myself CA without positioning for it since mobs die so quick, on bosses i put COI back in tab. Also since mobs were dying alot faster i put ROE inplace of FTF just messing around and noticed i was doing better that way, i could only figure since I was hitting ST then ROE by the time I got to disentegrate i had the extra arcane stacks. Another thing i did was i noticed people were either stacking as much crit as possible or power as possible on character. I found a balance, and it might be a mental thing but i put my character at 60% upfront crit, i used to always keep merc companion balanced crit/power, i ended up stacking power over crit on companion 7,000/3,000 roughly and found I still critted nonstop and had massive power gains, and when ive mentioned this usually Im told the I need my crit at 100% with procs, but i found my 60% upfront and in the high 80s low 90s is plenty. I also did some point splitting in thaum tree, i also have a renegade thaum with some point splitting thats really nice, i just cant say where they are split because as Im typing this Im on a drillship in the middle of the gulf of mexico and have no feat tree to look at, and i just worked 13hrs and my brains fried. When i get home I can go more in depth. Keep in mind i have no ACT logs, nothing to say this is better other than almost always being top paingiver no matter what the gs of the CW was, I would seriously sometimes double the dps of 4k CWs and i have no exact explanation why since I dont have anything to really test on like ACT logs. Im certain theres tons I was doing wrong, and im sure you are gonna let me know that. I only get to play 3 weeks then work 3 weeks, so I just try different things alot, but whatever i was doing worked. Maybe i should have said different, than unconventional.

Not really, ill just add it to the list of "things to try out when I am bored with my current build."

Np and thanks for still following the thread. I should be solid in about a week and able to play more. I keep respeccing to Thaum to test different builds, but just can't seem to find one that fits me.
I've decided to drop the Renegade feat that gives an extra 10 percent critical chance when slotting Chilling Presence in favor of the one above it to boost steal time and RoE. It's as you said, we still crit pretty often and I am happy with 55% (instead of 65% with the feat boost).
Also finally have enough power points to put quite a few extra Feats and Encounters at R4 so I can test different styles without a full respec. Going to start toying with Arcane/Chilling Presence Combo to see if I can improve personal DPS. I feel like my support rotation is fairly solid when I run with groups that prefer the buffs so I figure I might as well work on my personal DPS rotation.
Side Note: I always keep Swath on for boss fights (along with changing my rotation for support), but lately it seems like it doesn't help the party as much. I mean between starting smolder, firing my Lantern, and using RoE and Icy Rays, I should see the party boost in their DPS right? It just doesn't feel like its doing that. TheFabricant, I wish us Xbox peeps could run with you PC guys so we had something better to compare to. The last SS to beat me was almost 1000 iLvL more than me, but maybe that just because most of the great Xbox CWs don't random pug.
Im in guild, and i love pugging when nothing in guild is going on. I have used masterful arcane theft, and i liked it, could be a dps drop or increase just ran it 2 days before i left for work so dont really know. So i had talked about point splitting in previous post. At one point when running renegade thaum i thought to myself what if i put 5 points in elemental reinforcement and split the thaum renegade trees and lost the chaos magics, then another CW Maleficent i run with suggested the same thing, so i tried it. And I did alot more dps. I think its a good build for a CW who wants to do dps but isnt geared up enough yet for thaum oppressor, honest truth i never really lost paigiver to another CW running it when i had my stats the way they needed to be to run it effectively. I did try it again with my toon stated for thaum oppressor and it wasnt as good. So if you wanna try something diff here ya go. Normal renegade thaum build until you get to nightmare wizardry, i put 2 in nightmare wizardry, i found i still got CA almost instantly with only 8% chance, you can then put 4 in phantasmal destruction, or 3 in it and one in chilling advantage giving a lower geared player 7% more crit chance. I then went the thaum tree up to spelltwisting with 5 in it and put my last 5 points in elemental reinforcement. If you wanna go for personel dps this is a nice build especially if you still need more crit chance. If you got a extra respec token laying around and bored, i would say give it a shot, you might be suprised.
I had thought about doing that a few times. Since the Lostmauth set gets nerfed today, I might try it out. I am not sure if I want to give up chaos magic, but I'll try to split other points. Today will be a fun day for experimenting. Going to build a Greater Dread and see if it beats the lightning enchantment and abyss combo that I currently run. I have no intentions of switching any of my Lostmauth stuff out for anything else. I bought a Valindra belt though to see if that will change anything if this nerf hits us MoFs too much.
My wife runs a 3.6k Thaum/Opp MoF (she picked it when she started playing because she wanted to compliment my Rene/Thaum SS). She LOVES the fact that she's different than every other wizard she runs into.
That's awesome to hear. It's fun running with Wizards who run different builds.
Also, I just finished updating my original post to reflect all of the recent changes I have made to my character. My most surprising change was the switch out of Critical Conflagration/Chilling Presence combo. As long as I can apply smolder right off the bat, I'm able to keep good DPS and help the group.
We all know that as CWs group synergy means a lot unless you are a DPS monster and it benefits the group better if you focus on personal DPS. Since the Nerf, it's been nice to run into more groups willing to run without a tank and healer. It's fun teleporting to optimal positions to ensure everyone gets the heals and buffs a renegade provides. Running CN is especially fun when you get to watch players run close enough to you to get Chaotic Growth whenever they are low and want to heal quickly before Orcus fires his hard hit.
i dont run any specific build right now, just sorta put points here n there in all 3 trees lol. funny thing is in pugs i still tend to be near the top in dps. thats even not using smolder...im sure im doing 100000000 things wrong, but somethin must b right i really wouldnt mind following a build if i happened on one that was meant for groups, i play mostly with my cousin who mains gwf. and my guild when the whole my timezone+odd workhours allows

Run similar CW.
Like being able to go pure DPS when I want/need to and swap out a class feature to make use of combustive action's oppressor feat for extra group debuffs.
