Can you make npcs "practice"?

Hello all,
Is there a way to have encounters and/or npcs "practice" by attacking an invsible object or something? Or putting something in the floor that cannot be seen?

    I have done exactly that in my Crushbone quest by having the people practicing be monsters skinned to be NPCs attacking an invulnerable NPC hidden in a hay bale and stuff like that.
