I was just wondering... Does the RNG happen (happen? didnt know what else to put :p) with the keys or the boxes? Does it occur when we pick up the item or when we open or use it? If it occurs when we pick it up, does it remain the same when sold or does it change when it passes from one to another?

Yeah... Weird doubts I got

I think he's asking when the seed for the rng is generated, when the item is first acquired,or when the item is opened.
I can't imagine it would be on acquisition as then the seeds would have to be stored for every box, and that would be a huge amount of data to store for no good reason that could probably be tampered with. Also the fact they stack means that data couldn't be reliably linked to particular box. It is more than likely generated when you open it.

Praise be to RNGesus, he diced for our sins.

most prolly the RNG calculates its pick (in a fraction of a second) just before it shows you the contents when you open any box/node/chest..

I would assume, that it has less to do with luck, or some trick, and more to do with simple quantity. You open enough, even terrible odds will eventually produce results.

It's done while opening an item. Client sends request, server rolls dice and sends results.

Maybe, but when you see one of them open the Howling, which is only good for the Axebeak, they win the Axebeak.lol
    Because they're opening a thousand lockboxes : |

Pretty obvious when you see them selling stacks of companion/profession/black ice boxes.

What else are you expecting to see? If the only Admin'd prize is the axebeak, thats all you are going to know. They could have been opening boxes for hours.

I will say there are a number of names I recognize from the prize messages and have thought "wow, lucky guy". The RNG is notoriously streaky though and people benefit from it probably more than they remember. We all remember bad things, we generally forget the good.

That must add up to tens of thousands of dollars. Not sure why anyone would do that.
They're called whales. It's an MMO thing.

Some people have more disposable income than they know what to do with.

I can see it now- Honey, I need to take out a second mortgage. Why? Uhhh.... My point was, those people may know how the RNG works.

Well yeah, they do. That's why they're opening thousands of lockboxes.
