A note on lockbox mounts

xcatalystxcatalyst Member Posts: 4 Arc User
Ok, so, good to meet you all, first time poster here. I just wanted to take a moment to vent a little, and to gauge whether my opinion on this gels with any of you here.

Short but sweet, I have a character, a trickster, that I don't plan on playing again for what will likely be a long time.
I am concentrating now on both my hunter and paly. Thing is, some time ago, when I plunked down a few bucks of my hard earned cash on some Zen, I was fortunate enough to have the almighty RNGesus smile on me, granting me a skeleton horse mount.

Elated, of course I started riding it on my trickster, which was my main at the time.
Fun times were had, great distances traveled in minimal plots of time.

One thing bugged me, though. Something I hadn't noticed until owning a shiny new orange mount of my own:

THE FRIGGIN THINGS ARE CHARACTER BOUND.

Here I am now, back into the game after a short-ish hiatus, and there has been a paradigm shift amongst my stable of characters. My newly rolled paladin is quickly becoming frontrunner for my new main.

Certainly you can see where I'm going with this. Why the heck are these mounts, something that is so practically important, character bound instead of account bound?
devs afraid we get the ability to trade ourselves mounts, well never buy lockboxes
again? Please. I'd really like this to change. It's not as if I haven't put even more money into more lockboxes that have only yielded me crafting and upgrading supplies.

The orange mount drop rates are low enough that out of the MANY I have opened, I have only gotten one mount.

Let me use my mounts on the characters I'm using, people. It's not too much to ask, and I seriously doubt it'll hurt your bottom line.
As much as I'd like to continue kicking out cash to you guys for cool stuff. I'm a lot more likely to stop spending altogether in frustration when I've spent gobs of money to get one mount for one character that I don't use anymore but can't delete because it has a precious item that I don't want to lose. Options bring in the bucks far more than handcuffs.

Thoughts?

Zen store mounts and some rewards/promotion are account wide while lockbox and tarmalune are single character. Seems like a decent balance. Something for everyone.

General rule, everything is bound to a character if it is used/equipped. Not saying it's a great policy, but it is what it is and it is not going to change. I've seen posts like this regularly for a few years and you can see what the result has been. No change. It hurts when you abandon a character and the time and money spent on it.

You say it won't hurt their income, but where do they draw the line. If mounts can be unbound to give to an alt, why not equipment, weapons, artifacts, companions, etc.

If you haven't noticed, the trend is them getting more restrictive, not less. I expect someday runestones/enchantments will become character bound.

They should sell unbinding tokens for $1-$5 each.

If they made them Account bound instead of Character bound it might please everyone that way.

Would kill the value of them in TH and stop people buying boxes to obtain them, want an epic mount for all characters buy from Zen market, simple.
A msg pops up before you bind things stating it will be bound to that character and not be able to sell or trade to other characters.

some enchants ARE character bound. I've seen them.

The idea of paying to unbind things would solve the issue it seems. My only concern is i have noticed the game becoming more restrictive aswell.

I think all equipped items should become account bound. We either earned or bought what we have, so we should be able to move them around on our account.

So where does it end? Should quest gear be account bound too? Games make things bind to character so that people continue to do the content that gets the items.

How about account bound like the epic dungeon gear is, not that you have 1 for every single character but that you can at least unequip it and move it around ur chars just like epic gear now.
If you can't beat 'em, arrange to have them beaten.

Doesn't the gear bind to character after equipping it?

This really should be a thing... I have 2 pig companions bound to the same character, and 1 isn't even named yet. I don't even want to sell it or use it, it would be nice to have on another character, though.

I agree that stuff should never be character bounded, but account bound. EVERYTHING that is currently to character...

I've literally just noticed that box mounts are bound! Hmm sort of puts a dent in my plan but still nevermind, I cant wait to ride about on the Axe Break (Assuming I win one)

  • I would say that a Mythic mount is hardly "needed"; it's an abusive luxury that is not intended to be standard issue. One can exist in the game perfectly fine with a Rare mount, most of which are Zen Store, account wide aquisitions. It's just my opinion but the less Mythic riders blasting through spawns willy-nilly while attempting to swoop in and steal my objective right from under my nose, the better lol If one wants the power to do this then yes, they should have to pay for it on every single character they run. Of course that's just my view.

Not sure which mythic mounts do you mean, so far I've seen only Legendary. But in any case a faster mount is quite useful and some would say necessary in many aspects of gameplay. One of the most obvious examples, when farming HEs in WOD, IWD, SH - if you arrive later than most of the zerg crowd you chance to get epic or rare encounter reward goes down. And if you are too slow HE may get done before you even arrive.
