Well, now that I got to Spinward Rise I noted that often people group up to farm giants and gain XP. What's the catch? Is it just a matter of finishing the quest faster?
It's so people can get to 70 faster. Giants give a large amount of xp. Do the quests for killing them while you're at it and you'll raise your XP fast.
Do not farm giants, it is a waste of time and does not raise your XP faster than running quests. Farm Drowned Shore till you are about lvl 66 or 67, which is easy and quick since the quests are easy and quick. Then once you are 66 or 67 run through the rest of the zones ending with Spinward Rise. The people farming giants are only doing so because some people said once the MOD dropped that it was the quickest way to level...IT IS NOT, those people were very much wrong.
And for those that we comment on my post saying," Oh look deathbringer thinks he is right again blah blah blah." I have tested both ways, and so have many of my guild members. And the UNANIMOUS conclusion was that running quests is the best way.
I have helped get several players over the hump farming Giants and no one ever said not to do the quests, if you take care of quests and do the speedruns on the giants with one serious DPS you will get through faster, by speedrun I mean the Nimbus tower circuit which if timed right uses the respawn time to your advantage so you are constantly killing them with little or no downtime.

Yup, I did exactly this and with a large group it's pretty fun. I went from 69-70 in no time.

Now that the boons are done I've just went back and tried some of the HEs in Drowned Shore and other zones. And it all went pretty well - I can solo most of HEs in half of the allotted time. Except for crabs. Boss crab kills me with ease.

I've not gone back but found my pally could solo up to the boss at L63 - I was very impressed with that seeing as how my DC and CW got wiped by just 3 crabs at around the same level - lol.

There are 2 ways to look at this. If you have done all the vigalance including all spinward rise without stopping to do extra you are more than likely going to finish with about 1 or 2 levels left (ie your 68+). If this is the case then going back to the fiery pit and doing giants is actually viable (+plus quests).
If you havent finished spinward then I would say go there first then maybe come back if your not level 70 by then.
