Companion Upgrade Token - unbind/increase drop rate

wentriswentris Member Posts: 542 Arc User
With mod 6 introduction a new item appeared - Companion Upgrade Token. It was meant to be an alternative way of upgrading companion, if you didnt want to spend AD. The problem with it was it could only drop from Companion Fortification Kit (CFT) and it had a very low drop chance - about 1% for 30 tokens. The cost:return of CFT was so small I dont think anybody ever tried to upgrade their companion through Tokens - they were forgotten. With previous economy state the cost of AD was not excessively painful - or at least the cost:stat gain ratio was balanced.

However with the recent changes to AD generation the upgrade cost will become severe and should be looked at.
You made a great decision with Mark of Potency pricing - you lowered the cost of upgrade for players, without negative impact on your money gain - Preservation/Coalescent wards are needed as much as before and its the part where, at some point, real money is involved. In fact I think your income will increase, since more people will upgrade enchantments now. Why not to do the same with companion upgrades? Unfortunately, even though CFT cost in AD decreased, as everything without fixed cost, its contents too - perhaps even more than CFT cost itself - its much easier to upgrade Lesser Bonding Runestone to Normal one and rank 7s and 8s arent too appealing as well. It is still not going to be worth to gamble Tokens, since, on average, you need to open 400 Kits to upgrade companion from Epic to Legendary - its not only about the cost:return if you sold everything else, but managing drops from 400 kits is going to be too tedious for anybody. The drop chance of Tokens from CFT should increase, perhaps there should be additional ways of getting them, even from Zen-only purchases - for example if you buy a companion from Zen store you get a Lesser Bonding Runestone - why not to give some Upgrade Tokens as well? But, I think, the most important change would be unbinding them and making them a tradable currency.

Maybe you, Devs, or other players will find better ways of introducing this solution, but the general idea is: Make Companion Upgrade Tokens a viable way of upgrading a companion. Its AD cost would fluctuate with economy, it gives you real money at some point and, introduced wisely, it lessens burden of companion upgrade cost.

The only thing I want to add is that the economy is balanced and not overinflated. With not much financial ability personally, I know what bartering is. Don't take our ability to barter out. Whatever it is, I know keys wasn't optimal but they were essentially a barter item. Now the community is unable to fill the void but I for one am yearning for something relevant and not gambling-like to barter with. Does that help original poster or has that been said already.

The more simple solution is to lower the upgrade cost.

Or they could just add the tokens to the regular loot of that kit, that would at least improve their value a bit...

When they introduced the tokens, i originally thought they would drop occasionally from loot tables, otherwise what was the point ?
i pay for zen to get a key to open a lockbox that has a chance to drop a fortification box that has a chance to drop a token.... my head hurts.

Its too small of a chance in the drop, considering its like the 80% win to start with.. so 80% of this time you get this forification kit and 1 out of 30 or something will have the stupid upgrade tokens.

    ug.

I think it would be a good thing to inrease the tokens, but lowering the actual cost of upgrading companions is much more important at this time, IMHO.

but then they couldnt charge you $14 for a companion kit with guarenteed tokens. oh but you'll need 2 of them to upgrade a pet from blue to purple. and another 3 to get it to orange......

Companion Upgrade Tokens are totally useless for anything but green to blue, as you are lucky just go get 30.

To make them useful, do both of the following
    • Make them BtA rather than BtC
    • Let me make a partial payment with tokens and pay the balance with AD

I've got five legendary companions. Most of the upgrades have been done via tokens. As a VIP I get a key a day which has had a tendancy in the past to drop companion kits at a higher rate than anything else from boxes. I also when I have the spare AD will buy companion kits from the AH. Wait until x2 enchants & runes to open said boxes and you can make a tidy sum selling the contents - especially as there's a chance to drop bonding stones. The tokens soon add up to enough to upgrade.

This of course all takes time and patience, and the ability to be able to transfer my tokens to other toons would be a great addition. Also, you are right, the upgrade costs at epic and legendary are ridiculous.

They developed the system to transfer tradebars around within an acoount, why they haven't extended thioos to companion tokens is utterly beyond me. I tend to do epic to legendary with tokens only as the other upgrades are relatively cheaper with ADs.

Could add upgrade tokens to the Trade Bar store also?
