I was directed to submit this here from a ticket I submitted regarding this issue where I was basically told too bad so sad we cant help you with a glitch our game had. So here I am posting.
Subject: Recently I bought 2 items off the Auction House for my newly created Paladin. I bought the Ensorcelled Mace (175,000 diamonds) and Shield (80,000 Diamonds). I was logged into my Main character which is my Cleric since he had all the diamonds. After purchasing the items I looted them from the mailbox but when I went to place them both in my shared Bank Slot only the shield was able to transfer. When I looked at the Mace it said it was bound. I double checked the Auction House and all other Maces were labeled as "Bind on Equip". I can assure you that my Cleric did not nor could not equip an item that was class specific for a Paladin however the Mace is bound to my Cleric.
Steps to reproduce:
Step 1 - Grind for quite awhile to save up 255,000 diamonds
Step 2 - Go to the Auction House and search for the Ensorcelled Mace
Step 3 - Purchase the mace on a character other than a Paladin
Step 4 - The item is now bound to that character and cannot be given to your paladin (At least in my experience)
Bug: The Bind on Equip Item somehow bound to a class that is not eligible to even equip the item by simply removing it from the mailbox after a tradehouse purchase.

Not as annoying as what you experienced though, personally I would have bought and opened the mail with the character I intended to use the item for, at least transferred the AD over to the character I wanted to buy the item for.
