When they announced Legendary companions, people were under the impression the buffs would stack, requiring them to get all five companions to Legendary for BIS. This is clearly not the case, and so there is absolutely no reason to get more than one companion to legendary, since as long as you have it active it applies the buff no matter which companion you have summoned.
But I very much agree, they wanted companions to be relevant again, legendary companions really need something more than 'you get a small amount of their stats applied to your character', especially after how much AD I paid to upgrade more than one of them.
I have a follow up question: Are the legendary companions usable in any epic dungeons or do they still get kill instantly while doing basically nothing like purple companions do?

I used a Legendary striker companion and Bonding Runestones, which (if you can afford it) is statistically more effective than an Augment. I haven't used an Augment pet since Module 6 started. Even if they die, they self rez after a few seconds, and the Bonding Runestone buffs remain, so it's not that big of a deal.
Plus, they also pick up a little add agro and can save the group from taking a few whacks themselves.

Any recommendations on what specific type for say, a CW?
if your looking for a bonding proccer, then ranged attackers with fast cooldowns, sprites ( the flame and ice versions as well) tend to work well. slyph if you have the elf pack, zhen warlock, and a few others.

Nothing beats the Zhentarim Warlock. Her main attack doesn't have a cooldown, and *remarkably* she actually moves to avoid red sometimes, and backs away from enemies that get in her face.

I use an augment now, but I have the sylph and vouch for her. I mistakenly made her legendary as well as the augment. But she is great at pulling agro. Ofen times I clear up the trash while she keeps whatever big meanie entertained.

Tottaly usable, one example, yeti. on legendary yeti gets master defender and is imune to aoes, as it has 3 offence slots you can proffit completly from perfect bondings into offence, and in not aoes he still kickass surviving, if he dies he'll be just back in a few seconds readdy to kill!!!

the backing away sometimes can be dangerous, as i've had her move into more mobs but she's a machine gun alright.
