General question about loot from dragons

My question is pretty simple: is there any rhyme or reason to what drops? I've been finding the loot kind of random; I've died twice to a dragon and got a headdress, and I've survived the encounter and picked up the usual enchantment. Plus coins in both cases, of course.

It is my belief that each tier has a certain % of damage that must be done to the dragon to qualify for certain drops. I say this because all of the dragons where I did very minimal dragons have always dropped 2 coins and an enchantment. I've also had consistent 3 dragonhoard coins and an enchantment and of course the standard 5 coins with a rank 4 enchantment whenever I do a large amount of damage. As for the rarer items such as draconic gear, artifact belts and dragon bone items. I'd say they roll randomly per kill with a very low chance of succeeding. As to whether this is affected by my previous theory I haven't a clue.

This is just my speculation so that it with a grain of salt as it may be completely untrue.

Thanks, that's more or less what I had concluded, but it's nice to see others have the same experience.

I'm not sure blues are as rare as all that, though, given that there are always a good number of items that drop from dragons on the auction house, and given that I've had 4 drop (2x fashion gear, 2x offhand) in maybe 25 kills. And I usually do a decent amount of damage (though I can't say precisely how large a percentage :) ), and of course the percentage is lower when I have to respawn (most recently because I got one-shotted by a golem I didn't notice :p ).

Seems random to me. I recently had both the main hand and the off-hand drop from the same kill. It was a Great Success kill. But I've dropped nothing special at all from other Great Successes, and dropped the off-hand from normal kills.

    All random.

However, the few players that are in the Heroic Event area, the better your loot chances are. Please take this with a grain of salt. Three of guild members and I killed the Merothrax at least 5 times last night, just the 4 of us, yielding nothing but the usual Draconic Enchantments and Dragon Hoard Coins.

Next time you get a Great Success, check the level. Was it Rare (Blue) or Epic (Purple). Epic gets the GOOD STUFF, Rare gets the standard stuff (3 or 5 DH coins and the enchant. You probably got the normal kill with Epic rewards to get the off-hand.

got the Rod of imperial restraint and the plated band of constitution iirc from rothe valley dragon, both times different damage amount for sure because one dropped for my TR and one for my HR.

Also got several tunics, garb and head dresses, dragonbone weapons and dragon bone of course.

So RNG Jesus is once again the one you should invoke, drop rates are really low, killed like 400 dragons and had this two artifacts drop.

It seems I have better luck with loot drops when I get a "Great Success" over just "Completed Encounter". I just get subway tokens (coins) and turtle shells (enchant) when I get just the completed. I've gotten drac boots, drac gloves, and a db bow on the "great success" some of the times. It was a lot, so don't think I got them first time around.

I really think its just random rng once you meet the greater success requirments then you have a chance at something like a arifact, purple gear, or fashion sets. Only my speculation though...

I'll need to do more testing, but last night I collected all my successes (great and regular) and waited until I could find an instance with only one other person. Changed instance and opened the HE rewards, I got at least a blue with each one and two purples. My working theory is that the RNG is rolling for your 'tier' on the loot table along with everyone else that is opening their HE rewards at the same time in that instance. By limiting competition during the opening, maybe it improves one's odds of getting something other than the coins/potion/scroll.
