Noobquestion about Wards & ranking up artifacts/artifact equipment

Hi,

when ranking up artifacts or equipment i can use protection.The Preservation Ward and the Coalblabla ward. The Coal one is pretty clear to me. Use it = 100% succes.
But my question is about Preservation Ward, its says it protects refining stones from being lost. What exactly falls under the term Refining stones? And about Artifacts and gear can they break by failing the upgrade? Or are they also protected from the Preservation Ward?

    Only use Coal wards for 1% enchantment combines. Use Pres wards for everything else. If you fail a combine with a pres ward, you only lose the pres ward.

    Often, in order to actually perform the upgrade on an item, you'll need 1 or more "marks" in order to go ahead with it - these can be fairly common to nearly impossible to get. These get used up whether you succeed or fail in said upgrade. Obviously, in the case of a failure, such a loss can be expensive to replace, thus, you can use a preservation ward to ensure that if the upgrade process fails, you only lose the preservation ward instead of the mark(s). The mark(s) always gets used up on a successful upgrade, however, (but you get to keep the preservation ward in that case).
