How to give the game more of a D&D feel?

elderdayselderdays Member Posts: 36 Arc User
As I've played Neverwinter there have been many occasions when I felt that I was playing through a generic fantasy theme park hack and slash rather than D&D game let alone one set in the Realms. I'm not saying that I expect a complete port of the pnp game but I would like to see a few more of its core concepts brought to Neverwinter. I imagine other players have had similar feeling and I encourage them to share their ideas on how to bring that ole D&D feeling to Neverwinter. Please keep comments constructive. If you do not have any ideas of your own please refrain from tearing apart the thoughts of others.

Here are a few of what I believe are some of my more reasonable ideas.
- Add more of the iconic D&D monsters. Owlbears, umber hulks, gricks and displacer beast are among the popular and unique baddies that have yet to appear in a meaningful way.
- Less grind and more meaningful quests. It feels far less than heroic to grind through a kill x 30 times over and over again. Quest and enemies by extension should be more difficult and in turn more rewarding in terms of xp and loot.
- Larger less congested zones. Give players a chance to wander a bit and experience the illusion of traveling down isolated coasts and deep forests. As it is right now there is rarely an accessible square foot of the map that isn't in aggro range of a mob. Give us eye candy and spread things out a bit in future maps.
- Incorperate quests that make use of more than just combat. Let characters make use of their crafting and gathering skills in a creative way. Is a village being attack by raiders? A character with leadership can offer to train the villagers in combat a weapon smith on the other hand could provide weapons to use against the raiders.
- Provide quests and in game consequences based on a character's choice of deity and background. Similar to the racial quests scattered around the game these could go a step further and give players alternate objectives in specific quests and unique dialogue with interesting NPCs.

That's my short list I hope it at least generates some interesting discussion.

They could incorporate background ambiance effects like someone eating cheetos and from time to time slurping mountain dew.

I feel character classes need to be more customizable to make them feel more unique according to player taste; one good start would be to remove these stat caps and just let people have fun? The game needs to follow the D&D spirit of customization and interesting dungeon crawling. Maybe even a handful of randomly generated special dungeons each week for people to play just for the heck of playing and doing something fun. There should also be additional side quest unrelated to the storyline just to give people something else to look at. Maybe quests in the Docks District or Beggars Nest, Lonelywood, Baldur's Gate, Easthaven, etc.

I'm still waiting for the Tarrasque to show up..

    UPDATE/UPGRADE THE FOUNDRY EDITOR.
    No more PvP.
    No 6-digit crits (remember the1d8??).
No more being a mercenary for Sgt Knox and other random NPCs.
    Exploration. Adventure. Thinking.

Oh, the horror. Then it wouldn't be JUST LIKE OTHER MMOs.

Good. I'd drop $100 on the game RIGHT NOW if it suddenly was improved like that.

How to give the game more of a D&D feel? - sell the game to another company is your best shot

Trust me, everyone would love to see this. I'm sure BioWare or Obsidian (maybe Turbine?) would be glad to pick up the pieces.

Turbine did a very decent job with DDO. I just hates the Eberons. :(

Owl bears are too darn cute to fight!

Other than that The game is ok except for Epic DDs and lack of opportunity to make AD

I like the idea especially the idea of being able to enjoy the scenery without having to fight mobs all the time. I think giving more quest that don't always involve fighting 50+ mobs all the time. I would also enjoy doing personal dungeons without having to be in a party all the time. that is the only thing I'm not keen on all other mmorpg game I've played so far you have been able to do dungeon on your own or as a group.

    Some additional ideas that struck me are;
-Alignment: I can see some cool things being done with enchantments and some side quests here and there.
-Make deity choice meaningful. Quests, gear, abilities, etc
-Creature types: Undead, goblinoid, reptilian and all the other categories to make attacks, items and abilities interact with mobs differently.
