Well I've played with my settings and even did a 'reset to defaults' but I still have them strange squares all over my map.

Alas doing a force verify made no difference but thanks for that tip Eiledon --- aka Fizzgig ;) I don't know what in-game setting to try as I never changed them since I stared playing (about a month now). It was just one day the map was fine and the next not.
