I understand the PoV. I've had friends ask me "So, you pretend you're these heroes?" and I tell them "Not really. I'm not the heroes, I'm GOD. I created them."
The other superhero MMO has less far customization and afaik yet no Nemesis system (Hint @ Cryptic: The Nemesis system is COs "Superpower"; you should invest a bit more time than the current "nothing" in it before the other Team does it with DCUO, they appear to be more frequent with expansions to their game).
Then there is also this Marvel wannabe which does not even has a character creator.
Basically what Ratty said plus I have friends in the game I like to talk to and hang out with and I enjoy pitting costumes and characters I make in costume contests and even if I don't win and act a little grumpy I still enjoyed myself because it just means I got to try more and improve myself.
Pretty humanoid figures, unpredictable flashing lights and unexpected rewards (like meeting new people, or getting someone's joke in name) stimulates the production of dopamine. Pretty humanoid figures and action stimulate testosterone, and that drives a desire to get more of those unpredictable rewards.
I couldn't have all the children I wanted with all the partners I fell for over the years, but in Champions Online I can make all these amazingly talented adult babies with the dev's tools and I don't even know their real names.
I'll be honest, I didn't stick with it, but I just logged into my account info today and I have 2028 days subscribed since I bought lifetime membership in beta. I guess it's time to dust it off and see what's new. I haven't played since 2012 I think.
Because there's pretty much NOTHING else out there in the superhero genre.
Mind you, I don't CO much either (combination of busy life and irritation at things in-game). But I play intermittently. The LTS is probably the only thing keeping me here. As, if I had to play as a silver, I'd quit in a heartbeat, flip Cryptic off and use a bunch of inappropriate language on my way out.
I play other games too (prevents getting burn out on this game), but with Lifetime access I can keep coming back
My characters. I love what I've been able to create with my characters, both visually and with freeform power design such that I get a thematic build that is seriously powerful too. This might be a #1 for me if I was actually ranking this list. I will actually be legitimately depressed if this game ever goes down because of the characters I would loose.
Friends I've made here who are equally enthusatic about their characters
Easy to control. I like that I can setup my controls in a pseudo-3rd person shooter, and one that's pretty much the same movement and weapon/power selection layout as my favorite shooter games.
And the only other competition is DC Universe Online, which is a wonderful console MMO. But I have a PC.

For me:
Consolidate the currencies! (Please!)
Does your Champion have a theme song? (share it!)
Got a funny in-game screenshot? (share it!)
Please fix the Overdrive energy unlock! (Should help promote thematic build diversity!)
