While I've never had to host a wiki I assume (yes, I know what assuming makes...) it's much like any other CMS. Something that should be trivial for a company with the resources/manpower PWE has.

Please try and get it up and running soon, it's such a valuable resource for old and new players alike. Even before the more recent updates made by Vizzone and others it was still very useful, having it back 'as is' would be better than waiting for Cryptic/PW to update and check content before allowing us access.

It may be time to just give up on the old Wiki and make a new one. The hang up is a little silly now. I know a fresh start would be difficult, but some progress is better than waiting for something that is increasingly outdated to resurface. Something is better than nothing.

It's hard to say. On one hand TT is telling us they are in the process of doing stuff. But we also have someone who can contact Lohr and is willing to host himself.

Cryptic needs to just tell us what the hell is going on since this is just ridiculous at this point. This crap about not communicating with us needs to stop. Especially went we're about to have people spending their time and money to bring back something important to the community. It would suck if the players decided "screw you guys" and brought the wiki back only to have cryptic be all "oh, hey, we finally brought the wiki back" a few months later.

I honestly think this is the best course of action. A fan maintained wiki has the potential to be more flexible and devs can simply stick their heads in to clear up errors if absolutely needed.

The only reason I haven't jumped up and did exactly that is that I'm waiting for official permission, because I already restarted the wiki once when lohr was hard to contact and the wiki was locked up from new editors. She came back, so I just let mine die, since I wasn't about to toe step and she's always been the wiki mistress. I'm not doing the same thing twice. That and given a choice, I'd rather not bother her again for wiki info she already gave to them. She chose to retire, and I respect that, you know? It's starting to seem like the only real possibility at this point, though. The only other options is using wget on the wayback mirror, but that's lacking a ton of info because it's missing search parameters. I've been looking into methods of doing this for a while now, since I first made my offer.

And, I mean, the url could be free for a year right now if I got some sort of word one way or another on this. And it's not like there's a shortage of volunteer help, I'm positive I wouldn't be alone in the reconstruction efforts. I know for a fact that championswiki.com is currently available.

Back on topic there is a wikia, although i doubt thats been even updated at all recently since On-Alert.

Definitely do need a new site like a wiki for Champions Online. I used to use it myself, and the information was useful. Using the wayback machine to slowly access information that is quickly being outdated shouldn't be stressed upon us.

I bet if we challenged Cryptic to a race on setting up a new wiki that the community would beat them without any contest.

We live in a world where people are like wait and see and it will just all work out fine. You wait and wait and wait then die of old age...or the game does at least.
We also live in a world where people expect things handed to them for free. People wait their whole life for the next free handout.
Getting stuff done doesnt work like that. You want something in this life make it happen yourself no two ways about it.
Cryptic might have promised us one but they dont owe us a wiki. The have done their part sort of by providing us with a half working game. We have to do the wiki not them.

In case YOU didn't know we already had a fan made wiki back up some while ago before it went down due to various reasons. And your bit "I should make my own wiki" Sounded extremely and i mean EXTREMELY sarcastic when you put it together with your comment about nemcon, so no i didnt miss your point and that dog being there is assume I to depict your amount of stupidity.

Seriously, get your act together, stop passively aggressively hassling everyone, we're sick of it. I would point out every single offensive quote you've ever said on the forums (including malware's thread, my thread and a few others.) but i dont want to go that off topic on here.

The wikia that currently exists has been outdated for a while, however (IIRC) anonymous users can contribute to the site, right now i personally think thats the cheapest way to get CO a wiki again without having to pay for a new site like previous owner of the other one has.

Now im not supporting Ginger or against.. but despite being a but blunt we could have used a bit more organisation but the outcome what not what we expected so things were tricky to handle, if he doesnt understand that, then i dont know what will get to him. (since ive already explained what we had to go through in order to even organize and judge the event)

Now the last thing i'd like to say before i leave this thread alone, (Like every other thread on here...) is that, despite the negative comments, they are of use to us.. we improve on our mistakes and get better as we go along, we never stop learning, i for one appreciate all the lovely comments you guys made and all the support P.A is getting, and the comments on the CC be it good or bad.. it does help us.

Right well take you own advice. Ginger has said in the past he was most likely to harsh about the CC. Me and him are even freinds with some P.A people , long time P.A people. So drop the CC nonsense its done was a success one single person went..I didnt like it. Big effing deal.

I like you but your really pushing it here. Gingers point is valid we want a wiki we do it ourself. Think about it the NemCon comparison is sound waiting for Cryptic to do a wiki is like waiting for a NemCon team to form but on a larger scale but your rage at Ginger stopped you from seeing this.

We have a copy of the CO Wiki. We just need people to copy its contents over to the CO Wikia. It's boring tedious work and I'm not sure how many people are masochistic enough to slough through it (let's face it, it's unlikely someone will solo it... but hey, maybe the CO game mentality will rub off and someone will take it as a challenge). Heh... it's like the supposed tagging thing needed for CO assets in order to get a Foundry.

So, um... yeah. I'm sure there are enough people who can spend time for mass copy-pasta. We can't all be farming, PvPing, (E)RPing, trolling, or whatever all the time, right?

The Wiki people and Wika people didnt get along that well. Still has loads of merits this idea.

Now that the standard argument mid thread has finished.

questions:

1.does either or both require a website? someone said championswiki.com is available.

How much?
2. does it require a server(ok I know F...all about site hosting)?
how much?

3. can we use a kickstarter to get some money to pay for any costs, or a donation page set up?

4. does the copy/paste come with instructions? I, foe one, have only done copy/paste in Word and on the forums.

5. contact person for volunteers, to arrange sections to be copied.

any other constructive questions people can think of?

The bad press around Wikia are why it maybe not be a good idea to use that site.

The biggest problem is if Cryptic is going to put up a wiki and the players put up a wiki, then the community is going to be divided. Very few people are going to support both sites. That's a damn crappy thing to do to fans. The Cryptic wiki is going to have a huge advantage of more content up from the get-go if Taco can't get in touch with Lohr. There's that thing about her not wanting a player to host the wiki and I'm sure she has good reason for it.

Hosting and domains are super cheap depending on your needs. A plan on a shared server is much cheaper than a dedicated server. Most hosting is on a shared server, meaning one server is used to host multiple domains. For personal or low traffic sites, this is fine. For a site that requires a lot of dedicated bandwidth, it's not.

PayPal would be better than Kickstarter and more appropriate.

I don't remember what software the old wiki used, but if it's not the same, then it may not be as simple as importing it to a new site. Otherwise, how you copy and paste in word may be how it would need to be done.
