...I can't imagine that many people who play CO downloaded from ARC. Most of PWI's game can only be downloaded through ARC. That doesn't say much for the already low numbers.

Well, just from my experience: Even though I played CO well before PWE and ARC, when I got my snazzy, slightly-used-but-new-to-me, gaming laptop, I downloaded ARC, then CO and PWI from it. I'm sure that counted as brand new downloads, even though they came from a pre-existing PWE account.

To me, it would be more interesting to see the number of downloads from unique PWE accounts, without duplicates, but I'm not PWE's marketing department : )

The only thing you can really take away from the numbers is that CO is still doing better than all of PWI's games except one. Steam shows a higher player population than any of PWI's steam games. ARC shows more people are at least trying CO over most of PWI's games.

Greeeaaat. Now Kenpo's Dead Horse PvP build is going to be the new Flavor of the Month.
Choose your enemies carefully, because they will define you / Make them interesting, because in some ways they will mind you
They're not there in the beginning, but when your story ends / Gonna last with you longer than your friends

    • Cheering for science.
    • Defending inaccurate "scientific" methods of data collection.

    Pick one.

    • Defending the same BS that, mechanically, made up the "The game is dying because the XFire numbers are dropping" argument that was fielded three years ago.

    Pick none.

I should have made a /sarcasm notation. The Xfire/Steam junk is one thing. Next counting numbers is another. You guys can bag on him and I all you like, and while I admit it is not a great metric and just shows what we already know in a very general sense, is there a better one?

Additionally, the dead horse comments, while side splitting, are used very selectively here. When someone asks a question that has been asked before, are those cute gifs and comments used? We see the same questions, suggestions, arguments, and yet the dead horse defense is mostly used vs him. No irony there. At all.

I can't read his mind, obviously. I can make a judgement based on an online persona. He is constantly helping new players. You all don't seem to like his forum comments, and dogpile on him on the forums. He does more to keep new players in game than the lot of you, and the highschool bs "lets gang up on him because we can DERP!" is the dead horse of all the deadest horses in the history of deadory.

*-that last paragraph was not directed at you towershield, but counter away as needed. I didn't feel like quoting a bunch of other people. Sue me.

edit 2-Sills I was not referring to Steam numbers. I haven't seen him use Steam numbers. I wouldn't bother with those. I just think that many of you attribute malice to his intent, when I think he wants what everyone wants.

If you use Steam daily and check the current numbers you'll have noted that STO has 2,400 max concurrent daily players every day since it showed up on Steam in I think September 2012 with an average of 1,500 active players any given minute of any day at any hour.

Champions Online dropped off that list permanently at less than 600 max concurrent players playing daily and about 459 active players online some July afternoon in 2012.
It's his favorite dead horse, when he's not using cherry-picked screenshots to show how terrible the population is. He's been calling for the imminent demise of the game for at least a year now, I think (unless I'm confusing him with another of the many Cassandras I've seen here over the past few years).

    snip .

For all the effort he puts into helping people and keeping them in the game, he has the opposite effect on the forums. I've had to close pretty much all his threads about population because it's all stuff everyone already knows, and all it does is cause arguments and trolling, and no doubt it chases people away because of the "doom" ambiance it creates.

I've never once seen anything helpful come out of his population posts. They're unnecessary too, as all you have to do is log into the game and look around.

No, that was the "telepathy now" guy who got banned.

Anyway, as highlighted by everyone else, if you come to the forum and act like a jerk, you get treated like a jerk.

unfortunately this does not mean a hill of beans. those figures don't say when all of those were downloaded nor how many people still play. it just says how many people downloaded it from when to when.
and even if this means those where from mid last year that does not mean pwi will put more devs in this game and give us a huge update like those in now and sto. sorry for being a downer but to me those figures don't mean anything.

Fair enough. You are far more familiar with the forums then I am. This is what I get for reading here less frequently than I used to.

Sills-Ok I stand corrected, I hadn't noticed steam numbers before. I still maintain that instance counts shouldn't be so quickly dismissed, but as Biff pointed out, we all have eyes. As for the imminent demise comment, I don't think that's fair. I would bet serious money he'd be as upset as anyone else if it shuttered.

Kojiro- Okay this is what riles me up in the first place. When was it decided it's okay to define someone in such a narrow fashion.

I don't know how you guys judge "loyalty" or "support". To the extent that I do judge, I tend to judge by how much one has spent on the game, followed by a willingness to help others. Does that sound fair? How uncomfortable would things get if we started gauging loyalty in terms of money spent? Or time spent instructing newbies? I just don't get it anymore, but as Biff pointed out the forums and the game itself are seperate entities, so I will shut up.

In all fairness the individual to whom Kojiro seems to be referring did a pretty solid job of self defining in that fashion by posting in seemingly every thread on the boards with off topic, "telepathy now !" rants.

For what it is worth I think that Steam is a viable metric so long as it is taken as one of many needed to paint an accurate picture of CO's situation.

See, fury, the problem with next's numbers, as has been pointed out every time he throws them out there, is that he's using Steam statistics. And I don't know very many people who play this on Steam. (My roommate tells me that Steam eats an unacceptable level of system resources when running in the background.)

On the other hand, anyone who wants to download anything from Cryptic now and doesn't have (or doesn't want to use) Steam has to do it through Arc. And from what I've seen on my wife's new computer, it's easier to launch it through Arc at that point than it is to not launch through Arc (and it plays more nicely with the background), so that's going to give you better (albeit still imperfect) numbers.

Then there's the cherry-picking issue, but we've been over that plenty of times already...

I just wanna speak out for my fellow Steam people. Since we're a minority in ALOT OF GAMES. Literally every mmo out there aside from a handful like star trek we're the minority. So I wanna speak on behalf for all 500 of us. Don't take our numbers seriously. I mean honestly, have you seen our collection of games? I'm a regular on CO, but as for the rest of us, I gotta say out of those 500 me and alot of others play other games besides CO, especially when event season is slow or nothing is going on, for those of us on steam who have reached cap, and have nothing else to do but collect shiney on this game, I will say this. The only reason I use PWI forums for CO is because steams forums are lame. I don't like them with the exception of the new Contagion game thats been out and starbound.

With that said. Don't take our numbers seriously, we don't play the same games as you guys, and alot of stuff thats popular on steam shifts around. This month its been dota2 and Dayz. But every time they bring a new free to play game out on steam those numbers change. So when you see 500 one time, we could be 600 the next, and 100 the next because left 4 dead 2 was free that weekend.

K guys? Understand now? We're a gaming community. Not a statistical spreadsheet of whats hot and whats not. So please stop looking at our numbers and providing false information to your core player base. Cause I'm gonna tell you right now, when warframe and planetside 2 hit steam everybody and their mother dropped what they were doing for a week to play them. So again please. Do not take our numbers as a staple on who is playing your game on a regular basis. Even though I consider myself a regular and a long time veteran, I got a game list the size of detroit. You're not gonna see me on one title 24/7.

    K thx bye.

Part of the numbers are likely from how poorly designed Arc is. I've had to re-download/install CO a few times after making some hardware and software changes.

It doesn't look like Arc scans for games already installed, and adding them manually disables some of Arcs features, many of which are reasons for considering to use the program. Each time you re-download and install games through Arc it deletes the contents of the folder you are putting the games in.

Think it'd be a good idea for players to also provide their screenshots of the game for the gallery? I think that'd be awesome for our egos.

I had changed computers, tried Arc, liked it (not having to type anything to get in game was sweet) until I had to start the game once, wait for it to hang, go to process manager, kill it, then start it again where I could then start it up normally until the computer went to sleep again.

I switched to Steam, while having to log in is an annoyance the Steam wallet makes buying zen fast and (way too) easy.

I don't really do the whole Steam locust devour one game and then move on to the next sale thing.

I haven't had that happen. When I upgraded my OS, even though Arc and CO are sitting on a separate HDD from it I still had to reinstall the games through Arc to get CO to work properly. This reinstall is when I found out that the game deletes everything, including the screenshot folder, in the CO directory when all it should have to do is update the files.

That many people just from steam is not insignificant. Especially right after a steam sale.
