Aw... What's the matter, 'Lil fella? Do you hate fun and the people who have it?
I was standing foursquare against this meme, but then our local news program did a Harlem Shake moment this morning - and the annoyingly chirpy human-interest reporter asked us to tweet her our Harlem Shakes.
Maybe I can get some publicity for CO on at least local TV...

We've been in a stagnant state of complaining and negativity, especially on this forum for quite some time. And its nice to see every once and a while people playing and enjoying the game for fun. You can call it bandwagoning or whatever, the whole point is still having fun for the sake of fun.
Me personally I felt gangnam style was stupid. But I understood the humor and fun behind it. Would I jump around and do the dance or make a parody of it.....no. But I was still happy to see people enjoying it while it lasted.

What I like about Harlem Shake is that it's somewhat creative (IE: the whole second part and what people end up doing), the beat is nice, and, most mercifully, it's SHORT.

Rokuro, in the 1920s, after the first Miss America pageant (then called "America's Most Beautiful Bathing Beauty") folded amidst cries of corruption and unwholesomeness, the Southern California Exposition, held in Del Mar (and now known as the San Diego Fair), shamelessly stole the idea.
The new pageant, which occurred exactly once, was operated by the men who owned the nudist and midget concessions at the fairs - that is, they charged people money to go into tents and look at naked people and midgets. The winner of their Miss America crown "won" the right to pose nude in a tent for two years.
Looking at the history of what's amused humans, the Harlem Shake, difficult as this may be to believe, actually indicates an upward trend...

I'm somewhat with Rokuro on this. It's one thing to have some fun and share silly videos with silly jokes in them. It's quite another to force something into memehood like this Harlem Shake nonsense. While I'm not surprised a certain percentage of the CO community finds stupid memes funny, I AM surprised that so many people here are a part of the lowest common denominator and are actively trying to hamfist it onto the forum.
I wasn't going to post in this thread because i don't want to be "stop liking what i don't like guy" or a "hater" but since the topic seems to be on how stupid this fad is, ill add my 2 cents.
I don't have a problem with acting silly, in fact its unhealthy not to goof off some times. What i dont like about things like the Harlem shake is what i beleve to be its underlying cause:
1. Lack of originality. We are becoming more and more of a "me too" culture. This is shown by various memes, the overuse of auto tune, reboot movies, various destructive dogmas, ect.
2. That things like this go viral and yet more serious issues don't.

Oh, you think what I've said was too simple? Okay then, allow me to elaborate.
I remember coming across an article from cracked.com about the ridiculous reasons for people getting judged, and one of the things listed was the kind of preferences relating to pop culture that people have, be it taste in music and other forms of pop-culture entertainment. I couldn't have agreed more.
It's like someone walking into a club blasting Nicki Minaj's newest single with everyone on the dance floor having a really great time, and that someone goes around claiming how overrated Nicki Minaj is and how everyone dancing is mindless sheep who can't think for themselves, not having the sophistication to seek out better "quality" music from non-mainstream sources. Yeah, that guy. The more tolerant responders would probably just roll their eyes and continue having fun and the more vocal ones would probably tell the guy to take a hike.

Clear enough?
Yes.
While i have to say that you Nicki Manaj example doesn't carry over to forum discussion, I do agree with what you said about falling into a trap about having an elitist attitude about these things.
I hope your not trying to imply that I am that guy.

The Nick Minaj example was meant to be an relevant analogy and a parallel. Why shouldn't it carry over to the discussion?
For what its worth, i didn't come here to rain on any ones parade. If you had fun making the video, that should be enough. but you put in on a discussion forums where people discuss and inevitably disagree.
If we only shared our thoughts in threads where our personal opinions were the same as the popular opinions in the thread, these forums would be pointless.
The foundry thread was popular but still some people spoke out against it, how is this any different or even surprising?

I see the purpose of the club and the purpose of the forums as being different. You come to the forums to discuses argue ect. You come to the club (at least for me) to find a mate. Both are "social" places but with a different focus.
I guess im saying that the person in your description would would be more like showing up at the actual harlem shake event and complaining, where as we generally come to the forums to (among other things) complain.
If i loged in to CO and showed up at xcaligaxs event (or show up in the club) and complain about what hes doing I would say that im trolling/griefing/being a wet blanket.
If i log into a discussion forum and present an alternate view on the topic of discussion (without being disrespectful) then i feel like im within my rights.
For the record, I don't like Nicki Minaj (at least not her music *giggity*) but if her music came on in the club and a girl wants to dance, i will.

Indeed the playing Super Hero MMO's is a serious undertaking not to be taken likely...Onwards to the matter of serious and adult discussion! And with that good sire I have A QUESTION!!?
How the f@&k do you disagree with a Harlem Handshake?....and do I get a perk for doing so?

I can only speak for my self but the people who you are talking about are being douchey.
we all repeat certain behaviors to to certain degrees, its part of our nature as social creatures. I just think that its important to be mindful as we do so or risk "leading each other off a cliff" instead of towards growth.
Elitist mentality is just as dangerous as being a follower.

Which is the same as showing up in a forum thread with the harlem shake as the topic and complaining, and the complaints being more about people having a lack of integrity for finding it fun. If you're not seeing the parallel still then I guess it's better off that we agree to disagree.

I do see the parallels, i just felt it was a bad example. I feel that any one has a right to come to any thread and disagree with any one as long as they are not disrespectful. I believe that this is one of the main functions of the forums.

I'm more than capable of lumping people together in broad sweeping generalizations on my own, I don't need you to tell me who belongs in what category. However since you seem to be so upset over it, let me address your concerns.
There are three threads up right now that almost specifically deal with the Harlem Shake, two were started by the same person and the other is this thread.
Out of the three, this one is meant to be a joke and I recognize it as such because it was more or less explicitly stated to be so.

You're all silly. This thread is about how awesome I am at doing the Harlem Shake dance, and how I have amazing fresh breath, and that if I take my helmet off, the world would just explode under the sheer majesty of how handsome I am.
I'm somewhat with Rokuro on this. It's one thing to have some fun and share silly videos with silly jokes in them. (talking about THIS thread) It's quite another to force something into memehood like this Harlem Shake nonsense. (talking about the other two) While I'm not surprised a certain percentage of the CO community finds stupid memes funny, (I'm just as guilty of this as the rest of us) I AM surprised that so many people here are a part of the lowest common denominator and are actively trying to hamfist it onto the forum. (if you, Jenny, thought you were included in this then I refer you to what I said above)
Not once did I say that anyone who finds this funny is part of the "lowest common denominator". That part is reserved for people who think CO needs to jump on the viral meme bandwagon.
2PM PST today come to the middle of ren center ready to show off everything you got that makes you special in champions online.
Requirements?: We need a Giant doing the running man.
A chain swinger spinning in circle.
A guy with a robot head helmet.
Some Teliosaurs.
A Metabowlic chain reaction.
Caligas Peons.
Some windmills.
Lasers.
And a rusty paper clip and some cardboard.
Video gets made, posted all over the web, share it with your friends, use it as an invitation to play champions online. It gets good, send it in to IGN, have them pass it around, free promotion.
There, Viral game support at its finest. -snip-
If you still feel slighted by my earlier statement then I don't know what else to tell you, Jenny. Should I have started out with the long drawn out breakdown like this earlier? Probably. Would this thread have turned out differently if I had? Of course not. It would have just been someone else in your place calling me out for being a hater or something.

I even said in my first statement:
Not once did I say that anyone who finds this funny is part of the "lowest common denominator". That part is reserved for people who think CO needs to jump on the viral meme bandwagon.

So let me get this straight, since that post was reserved for people who you believe are the lowest common denominator and thus start bringing up my posts, you're either doing one of two things, trying to backpedal what you said to make it seem like you weren't just taking the elitist route and lumping jenny into the mix. Or Picking out my posts which were the first ones to start it. "That part is reserved for people who think CO needs to jump on the viral meme bandwagon."
I know there's certain people here quoting my posts, scapegoating etc, people who play the game, but waste no time jumping on the first complaint post about either cryptic, pwe, or how much they dislike the game, or item, or other people having fun. Not really sure how the logic works behind that. But I've noticed a trend. And I've even tried to steer away from it in the forums since the foundry messages were sent to the CEO. You can't bring positive change by aiming all of your energy at being negative.
And my basic understanding is you want the champions community to only like things that you like, and if anyone else likes something different it automatically makes them "The lowest common denominator".
So much so, that instead of just "walking away from a thread that contains content you think is stupid" you feel the need to post how stupid you think it is......<
what sense does that make?
And before you diss viral/marketing, I was able to show my video to followers and get 20 new players/old players to come back, because they had forgot about the game, or never heard of it/tried it.
Both of these videos were made by the community. Nobody forced anybody to do anything (except maybe caligas mind control devices implanted on his guildies)
There was no gun to anybody's head. Which means that the community or players involved came out because they wanted to, not because they hated it, or were sheep/lemmings/#whateverotherelitistgarbagecanpossiblycomeupwithyoloswagyesIjustmadeatwitterjoke
Hey look, I can generalize too.
But yeah, the only thing I'm seeing on here aside from hijacking Caliga's thread is "I don't like something let me go on and on about it while subtly insulting people without flaming."
So choose your words a bit wiser before coming onto people with that whole "You guys must be the lowest common denominator" spiel.
Its not a good look.
You're saying that it's okay for people to find a certain viral meme funny and be entertained by it (yourself included), but it's not okay for people to contribute in giving the meme exposure (as you say, jumping on the meme bandwagon) as was done by ariesmajor and Caliga so that others can participate and be entertained by it.
If you don't see the double standards in that then I don't know what to tell you.
I agree with ariesmajor, you're just backpedaling. I mean, you've even changed the entire context of your original post with those explanations in teal and had to make external references to someone else's post not previously mentioned at all, and then give the convenient excuse of not having done these things at the start because you'd be accused as being a bad guy either way.
Ahhh, the usual. Someone posts something they think is amusing to try and share the fun and then you have people trying to rain on the parade. No wonder the devs don't bother sharing any new fun in the game...wait wut?

Sorry to say, I ain't buying it.
I don't see any double standards because I didn't imply any in the first place.
I'm gonna type this out plainly in the hopes that it will be read plainly with minimal reading between the lines taking place.
I don't find this forced meme funny but I'm not gonna think ill of anyone who finds it amusing.
Caliga did it as a joke, he said so himself.
Ariesmajor said in no uncertain terms that he did this in the hopes it would go viral, hoping that CO would get some sort of publicity out of it.
I made a not very clear remark about my thoughts in regards to that.
You got offended at the not very clear remark so I explained what I meant more clearly, using examples to get my point across and to show you that I wasn't trying to lump you into anything.
Now I'm "backpedaling" because what I really meant and what you thought I was saying don't match up?
Yeah sure, whatever. We'll go with that then. Everything you say is right, dear. It's like I'm really talking to my ex wife, holy ****.
But I've noticed a trend. And I've even tried to steer away from it in the forums since the foundry messages were sent to the CEO. You can't bring positive change by aiming all of your energy at being negative.

Maybe Jenny would agree with you if the Harlem Shake featured Mad Cow disease.
Harlem Shake never had and hopefully will never have anything to do with this game. Aside from a small reference, maybe, like a mission named "Harmon Shake" or something along that line. Would that be the "improvement" you want?
Or is your idea more like: "CO needs a Harlem Shake emote! Many people love that silly dance, so we'd get many new players if we had it!"?
That is not going to happen. And even if it would, it wouldn't work. NOBODY would play CO just to do a virtual Harlem Shake.
Seriously, tell me how you think the Harlem Shake could do CO any good.

It's just me making a Harlem Shake video.
Jesus.

For what it's worth Caliga, I had a chuckle watching it.
Guess I'm going to be labelled as someone who is part of the "lowest common denominator". How will I live with the shame?
While i have to say that you Nicki Manaj example doesn't carry over to forum discussion, I do agree with what you said about falling into a trap about having an elitist attitude about these things.
I hope your not trying to imply that I am that guy.

The Nick Minaj example was meant to be an relevant analogy and a parallel. Why shouldn't it carry over to the discussion?
Considering that you've mentioned being against adopting an elitist attitude about these things, nah.
If we only shared our thoughts in threads where our personal opinions were the same as the popular opinions in the thread, these forums would be pointless.
The foundry thread was popular but still some people spoke out against it, how is this any different or even surprising?

Except that certain people in this thread who aren't in favor of the the thread are making personal attacks against the intelligence and integrity of the people who are in favor while adopting a holier-than-thou attitude towards them. That's the difference.

How the f@&k do you disagree with a Harlem Handshake?....and do I get a perk for doing so?

we all repeat certain behaviors to to certain degrees, its part of our nature as social creatures.

Surly you've realized by now that you and i are on opposite ends of the serious spectrum.
*puts on serious glasses (bifocals)*
I answered your question in post #19.
I do see the parallels, i just felt it was a bad example. I feel that any one has a right to come to any thread and disagree with any one as long as they are not disrespectful. I believe that this is one of the main functions of the forums.
Maybe im just splitting hairs.

Source:
I even said in my first statement:
Not once did I say that anyone who finds this funny is part of the "lowest common denominator". That part is reserved for people who think CO needs to jump on the viral meme bandwagon.
Sorry to say, I ain't buying it.

I don't see any double standards because I didn't imply any in the first place.
I'm gonna type this out plainly in the hopes that it will be read plainly with minimal reading between the lines taking place.
Now I'm "backpedaling" because what I really meant and what you thought I was saying don't match up?
Yeah sure, whatever. We'll go with that then. Everything you say is right, dear. It's like I'm really talking to my ex wife, holy ****.
You are not seriously trying to say that supporting a meme is going to help us getting Foundry or any other improvement, are you?
Maybe Jenny would agree with you if the Harlem Shake featured Mad Cow disease.
^Fixed, to bring it all into context for you.
