Some of the Westside missions drop a "Summon Gang War" device

This probably sounds dumb, but I cannot make these work to save my life. I put them in the hotbar, but when I click them I see what appears to be a short summoning animation and then nothing happens. Am I doing something wrong (maybe I've outleveled them) or is this a bug?

I think you have to charge them (hold down the button not just click ).

Hmmm....I thought I tried that, but maybe I did not. (See -- I knew I was doing something dumb!)

Not "dumb" - it's not necessarily intuitively obvious, since some devices just require a single click and then you go through a summoning animation. Those do require a charge, though.

Dual pistols is actually effective, doesn't have any of the overly flashy animations, and is fun to play. Blocking and Movement too, GW2 forever ruined me on dashing in and out and all over.

Defensive powers available for support and ranged roles. Heck, just having a range of defense and mitigation available outside of melee ATs and IO enhancements.

Freeform in general, watching how stats, gear, powers, and specializations all interact. Its a lot more complicated than CoX, but the payoffs look totally worth it.

Reading about characters like Thundrax that have decades(!) of RP history behind them. I'm kinda jealous I didn't get into superhero RP that early.

Having NPCs spontaneously run up to me for my autograph or to inform the heroine that there's trouble afoot. Its good to be well-known! I think.

Costume options such as being able to pattern skin 'n cloth tops. Though I am going to sorely miss Long and Barbaric hairstyles, the mullets aren't doin' it for me. :(

You may have better luck using the keyboard to activate these rather than the mouse.

Wow. Honestly? I haven't played either game for well over a year or so. I can't really say I liked one game over the other because I really liked both games for different reasons.

What I will say is that it's really amazing to see the CO community being super welcoming and helpful towards the CoH community in the wake of that game's impending shut-down. I'll be joining you guys in CO soon myself.

So one thing I like about CO and CoH: Hands down the best collective community out of any MMORPG ever. Kudos go all around and I'm looking forward to joining you folks soon.

    To be honest here?

CO and CoX are each strong where the other is weak. The greatest difference comes in intended style - CoX is dark and gritty, CO is far less so.

CO has more colours on the costume pieces, asymmetrical options, a far more generous slider system and inherent glow within costume pieces....but....

CoX has auras, more options for capes and base pieces, more weapon options and stronger power customisation options.

Where one is strong the other is weak. Where one is weak the other is strong.

And that is something I think we all should NOT do. I've always had a hard time picking my number one favorite thing (i.e. artist, movie, game). I can easily give you a list of my favorite items but to chose one is a disservice to the other favorites of mine. That's why I put this on my OP:
So for all those who are COH refugees, what are some things that you find better in this game than COH (not better as in CO is better than COH but better as in CO does this differently than COH and I like it better this way).

To me, neither of them are my ultimate favorite. COX has some great things and CO has some great things as well. Right now I'm into CO since it's a new shiny toy for me. If COX somehow survives, I would eventually go back to them for a while and switch back and forth. Neither game is better IMHO. They each have their pluses and minuses.

Another thing I like in CO is the fact that the AP can be soloed and you can do other things in the middle of them as well (since they are usually split into three parts (in my experience). There is a down side to it but this thread is for the positive things so I'll skip it for now :).

    I had the same problem.

As for a few things I like about CO:

    Freeform powers = Pure Awesome!!
Powerhouse. Trying out powers before commiting to them is a dream come true.
Name system. No more spending an hour trying to find a name I can live with.
    Free and diverse travel powers.
Additional character slots earned by leveling exisitng characters.

A few things I don't like about CO:

Art style. Just not a fan.
Power enhancing invisible clothes. Again, not a fan.
Salvage items triggering new missions but only if you click on them. I missed a number of missions because of this one.

All thing considered, CO is a good game and I've felt very welcomed as a CoX refugee.

I can certainly understand not liking the art style - try disabling the comic style outlines, and if you play w/ the face sliders, you can get a much different look going.

Can you elaborate on what you mean by "power enhancing invisible clothes"? Do you mean how cape glide adds a cape if you don't have one, or how fire wings add wings if you don't have them? If so, to some extent i understand, but OTOH the costume piece is inherent in the name, so I can sorta understand them forcing said piece on you.

As far as the salvage items go, there is a mission in the tutorial that explains this mechanic, (albeit it's kinda out of the way). It would be nice if you got a popup stating "You got a mission clue!" or something to let you know to check your inventory...

I think by "power enhancing invisible clothes" he means that our Gear that has such a profound impact on our characters Stats. and Abilities does not alter their appearance in any way (Armadillo not included). Personally, I think this is the games single BEST feature. This way, I can keep whatever cosmetic and fashion abomination in the eyes of good taste everywhere free and clear of any artistic sensibilities whatsoever without ever having to worry about being required to wear something not hideous

This comic pretty much says everything about visible gear.

I tend to view them a lot like enhancements in CoH. I really don't look at them like new clothes -- and I'm greatful that I do not have costume changes forced on my be "gear."

One thing i've not been happy with the on alert changes is the blandness of the gear. Its all gloves, dusters, and helms. So I can understand the whole invisible gear complaints.

Before on alert it was more varied. It had more esoteric intangible things. You could pick up mutagens, dna, spiritual favor, toxic substances, cyber gizmos, and a whole ton of similar stuff im possibly forgetting. Sure they are only item titles, it was always about the stats. But I always felt better when my fragile caster had an array of mystical knickknacks instead of strapping on a combat helmet.

It was that level of flair, and the quirky flavor text with them. That really polishes a game. Its a shame they are gone.

On the one hand I don't agree, because while the current gear may be bland, just because it's a helm or gloves doesn't mean it can't have some flair or quirky flavor text. I especially rather liked some of the flavor text on items. Reminded me of MtG flavor text on the cards.

    Such as...

"Yes, I think ?toast' is an appropriate description."

    Or one of my favorites.

"Don't try to outrun one of Dominia's Grizzlies; it'll catch you, knock you down, and eat you. Of course, you could run up a tree. In that case you'll get a nice view before it knocks the tree down and eats you."

On the other hand I agree, more variety is nice even if it's a purely IC thing, it's not like they have to come up with 3d objects for the items. So they can do pretty much anything on with the item artwork.

I remember and was I'll a bit disappointed when I finished No Kountry With Old Comics and rather then getting a comic book for gear, it was some sort of real item. Now the whole idea of equipping a comic book was a bit silly, but was still fun.
