Many people I know tend to who tend overplay games for too many hours a day and days per week that they get:
A.) Bored with the same routine
B.) Realize they have real-life time and financial issues needing to take more priority
C.) Some of both.
Sometimes just taking a break or managing your time better is needed!
Take even myself for example. I hardly have time to play right now, not to mention I'm traveling a lot so the gaming rig desktop stays behind and I don't just have $2000 to $3000 to drop on a cutting-edge, well-built gaming laptop. There are a lot of things I would LIKE, but there this pesky thing called reality that takes precedence... I don't expect kids who just get everything they want for free from mom & dad to relate, but the other adults I think can relate if I say: there's no such thing as a free lunch. Unless I get winning lotto ticket or something, I'm not getting any handouts, gains must be earning. And earning can take time and mean periodically putting aside how frequently I splurge on time doing fun stuff, like playing this game.
There's also been a lot of resentment over the way long-time loyal customers to the game have been treated. Many of these people are customers Cryptic is probably loosing for good and that's a damned shame, business mismanagement. And worse, it was mostly due to bad presentation, sloppy/rushed QA leaving many bugs, nullifying much of the time people invested in the MMO with a slap-in-the-face conversion ratio from crafting components to mods, removing the useful consumable blueprints entirely, and unpolished marketing PR to persuade long-time members to give it a chance. Effort at making amends I can see being shown, but it's really quite depressing from the veterans' point of view.
Additionally consider that many people follow their friends. If all your pals go to something else, you tend to want to follow them. Gaming community "clans" are ephermial like that...
That said I've seen a suprising amount of growth too (new & returning players)

There's certainly some truth to this; there's a lot of us that have been here since the beginning (and I'm not even one of the real gray-beards, I only joined a week after release), and we were holding on to hope that the PWE merger would mean... well, that it would mean something better than grab bags, nigh-on unusable forum software, and the removal of out-of-game features.
Combine that with the rather heavy-handed treatment of users with the forum switch, and the seasonal silence disorder that's ever plagued Cryptic, it's not hard to see why some people, even if they've been here for a long time, feel the need to let go.
I almost did myself with this forum switch. I can't fathom why a company would treat its loyal customers like that. But, in the end, I still enjoy the game so I'll stay around. There's a new game* in my heart these days though, so CO will have to play second fiddle for a while.

Well the only two I have seen of late is Kenpo and Sek and thats just cause those guys have real life stuff to do.
When two peeps who have helped so many over the years move on to more work or getting married its just a polite way of saying look guys been fun but got serious stuff to do.
Real life comes first.
The only drama I am seeing is with this thread.
Nepht and Dr Deflecto on primus
They all thought I was out of the game....But I'm holding all the lockboxes now..
I'll......FOAM FINGER YOUR BACK!
But .. Doomsday Clock is ticking .. DOOOOM starts in 20(-3) days
More serious, i will also leave CO for a while then, but i think when the new and shiny
is gone, i will also return to CO now and then. Lastly only time will tell
I figure this is a good a thread as any to explain my own leaving the game* - and I'm going to be *very* frank, in a way I usually am not -
1) Alerts are kinda bleh to me. I hate grind, alerts and questionite stuff is... well... grind.
2) I feel a sense of doom around CO to be frank, like the game is never going to be seriously looked at by the higher ups - it's just not in their opinion worth the money. It'll stay alive probably, because closing games looks bad; and you can hope CO will get them into other Perfect World games - but I feel like it's so far on the backburner that it's never going to have it's potential really brought out like it could be.
I feel like the only way to save the game at this point is to do a total revamp - pour money into it like it's a brand new game, build an entire game's worth of content, and then re-re-launch. But that's not going to happen; not because our dev team wouldn't be willing, but because they'll never have the resources and personnel to do it.
3) I'm tired - I do have over 1200 hours in the game; that's quite a bit considering some of my favorite single player games have 80 hours tops. Simply put I've been everywhere and done everything in CO; barring the aforementioned, I just don't see a lot for me to play for, especially since they stopped doing Comic Series. (Maybe I'm alone, but I loved those, ditto STO feature episodes.)
In this way it's kind of like me with COH - There's just not that much left for me to do, and what there is, I'm not sure I want to bother with.
4) Vehicles intrigue me, but there are a lot of ways for them to go very, very wrong imo; particularly since this first one is apparently in a grab bag type of deal. The one feature that was starting to get me a tiny bit excited for CO is rapidly starting to look like Ships in STO - something I'm liable to have to pay out the wazoo for. If that ends up being the case then barring them being very, very cool, I likely won't bother; and that would be sad.
5) The forum name thing was the straw that broke the squirrel's back. As you can see I did in fact get my name back (yay!); but it was a pain to do and I had to jump through some hoops to get it done.** That's honestly really, REALLY stupid to do to a longstanding MMO community.
We've gotten to know each other by our handles; and now after 3 odd years a bunch of folks have suddenly different names; we lost a cool feature in the Character pages, and we lost our longstanding post histories and mail too.
I mean for instance, I wrote a guide to medieval style costuming - while it's petty, I'd like people to know *I* wrote that guide if they come across it. But they won't - it's "Archived Forum Post" now.
And we did all this for... what exactly? What gain was there for us players? I'm sure it's easier for Perfect World this way, but the people who actually play the games... what did we get from this? A headache, that's what.
That's why I left the game largely. I like our devs, I like the people here on the forums and in my SG... but things just aren't working out anymore, so I had to move on. <_ _> I don't like saying that because the costume system in this game is FREAKING AWESOME; and not having access to it in other games drives me up the wall. But there it is.
*Strangely not the forums, I guess I just like folks here enough I suppose. (and I admit, I *hope* to see something to drag me back into CO)
**This isn't customer support's fault though; they did well.
Check out my Champions Online webcomic in progress!
I don't find the forums as pleasant to hang around in and pore over as the old ones. It seems that a lot of the best contributors have been feeling the same, which makes the forums even less useful, and it kind of snowballs.
I went through several weeks of not playing CO at all, which is really not unexpected. My interest in any game, no matter how much I might like it, is not constant. I have been playing TF2 again some, and picked up a bunch of games in that recent Steam sale, and am also trying to not spend as much overall time playing games when I have to get stuff done. So it's not bad.
I'm still here and trying to hit 40 with another character to create another character concept I want to do, this one more for RP reasons than "I wanna try this build" reasons.
I'm actually on my way back into the game as of today. The service provider technician just left a few hours ago and am currently patching CO (614mb worth) as of right now. Want to see the things I've missed and decide if I'll continue on or if I'll go off to something else until real* content comes out.
*real content as in new zones, mission arcs, end game, etc. Not Alerts.

I noticed your handle on the *other* forums just today. I've been having a blast there myself. I hope you're enjoying the game (on topic, goodbye threads are no way to go, now a goodbye party? That's doing it right.)

Beta REPRESENT!!!!
Also, agreed (for like, the first time ever), but like I said, Marketing hates CO. Also, it's not Cryptic that's silent, it's Team CO. Stormshade has like 10 posts for yesterday alone over on the NW forums.
But I don't blame the rest of the Devs, they were between a PW and a forum and did the best they could.
*It's an awesome game, it's such a shame the user interface is ****, but despite this I'm probably going to lifetime up in there when I can afford it.
More seriously, as Smackwell said, this is just a couple of posts of people leaving (one of them getting married).... though I guess that gives enough justification for doom-sayers to show up.
Personally I am having more fun than pre-Alert times... before I barely did any group content because of the pain and hassle that was to get a party going. For me it was a single player game with some multiplayer components. While the Alerts are not perfect per se... they are great platform for group content, and I would love to see the concept expanded to lairs, so we can group up easier that way, a-la WoW.
I don't agree with certain things that had happened recently, thats for sure... for example the decimation of the site functionality, particularly the "My characters" page and the "friends list" gadget, that was just dumb... and I am yet to see their return, and I doubt it.... but ultimately the game its what I enjoy playing, and likely will stick around for awhile until I get bored of it.
Let's not get doomy over this, and lets move on.

"Science teaches us to expect -- demand -- more than just eerie mysteries. What use is a puzzle that can't be solved? Patience is fine, but I'm not going to stop asking the universe to make sense!"
FYI: Blizzard's 2nd Quarter Report showed that they have dipped under 10 million subscribers for the first time in years (which is a long time in terms of game communities), loosing 1.1 million subscribers over the past few months. They are still the giant, but not quite as large. The number one reason I keep seeing over and over from the players is very familiar to this discussion here: lack of new releases of content. Now that said there are major content updates (explorable stuff, all new maps, gear that's one more up a notch) in that large game, but after 10 months many have either gotten bored or just decided it's not worth the money to subscribe right now.
Now we're a game that could potentially shine in a weak global economy with people cutting back on leisure expenditures! Champions Online excels at being potentially 100% free if you've got the time and effort to spend on it. Questionite Exchange for cash shop stuff ensures that. It's a very good formula and I'm certain this game won't be dying anytime soon.
But this game's direction is frustrating! It's always had potential but the teams leading it never seem to realize that... Don't tell me it's just short-staffing. Driven developers have accomplished much more with less!
Whether it be the team of 5 guys who made CounterStike, Notch who made MineCraft, OpenStudy.com with it's 3 developers, or heck even some mega-sized tech corporations that started out very tiny like Apple, Microsoft, or Facebook.
Sorry I don't buy this "too hard to do" logic. That's just balooney/BS!
It's all a matter how how much you believe in the design, having a clean & solid design, cranking out the content continuously, and marketing it to keep the momentum growing (i.e.: recruit new customers, advertise & referrals, while keeping the ones you have, customer service and not alienating loyal customers)
You have to want it, put the effort in, and play smart if you want to win.
The smart play right now would be squashing bugs and working on a whole new zone.

You realize that WoW still has more subs than New York City has residents?
They could lose 1 million every year, and still be king for the next 7 years....
And even with the Diablo III debacle (Game was terrible) Blizzard still has huge good faith and a stellar reputation (though damaged) , and you can bet people will eat up "TITAN" like crazy.

Not only harder to read, but also the "goto first unread post" function doesn't send
you always to your last read post like it did on the old forums, so its often harder
to keep tracking what post you had read at last
Some people seem to think that someone cares if they stop playing, so they conduct their "departure" the same way that drag queens leave a stage... with as much dramatic posing and fake emotion as possible.
I decided to play some other games for a bit now that I bought out everything I want in the C-Store... but I didn't feel the need to make a post about that decision, because I have the common sense and lack of unwarrented ego to know that nobody cares. Also, I'm not the dramatic type, so I don't feel the need to make it seem like I'm "forever turning my back on CO as dramatic music plays and I walk in slow motion".
Basically, people are under the delusion that everyone ( including the employees at Cryptic ) are sad to see them go. If they weren't, they wouldn't make these posts... common sense tells you that anyone who cares that you haven't been logging in will send you an IM and ask about it.
Some people just don't realize how small a percentage of the population they are.

I am sorry but dont confuse yourself with Kenpo or RSD.
People cared when Kenpo left because well he does have the best known SG in the whole game and so many people have joined SECRETS chat channel that you could say Kenpo is the best known player in the whole of the game. So when Kenpo left he did have to say so so people know more or less when it comes to SECRET stuff contact SuperC instead. Kenpo was Champions Batman
People cared when Real Soviet Damage left firstly because of all the great guides he has written and all the help he has given people and the fact he is the best known face in Champions Roleplaying community.

Smoochan and Nepht BOTH have solid points made above. Delusions of grandeur are commonplace with dramatic "I'm leaving forever" posts, but the two referenced here do have notable positive influence.
That said, the proactive thing to do is to seek to improve things so people won't driven away, and bring in and encourage newbies to stay, be nice and show them the ropes a bit.
You can't change the past, but you can plan for the future and enjoy the present. Remember this quintessential truth.
Dunno about that, but I *can* see people leaving because the forum is an eye-sore that's hard to read, *and* has less functionality than the old one.
Seriously PWE, can't you afford a single web designer to come make this thing a bit easier on the eyes?
Heck I'd do it for free, and I'm quite familiar with phpBB, ProBoard, and some web-design fundamentals (example: http://www.sector-thirteen.com). I'm also a big fan of the simplicity of Google's classic homepage. ("form follows function" and form must ease function not intefere with it)
Meh, I also dislike censorship. Let people argue, just don't let it involve illegal stuff.

That kind of elitism and propping people up onto pedastools is what breeds resentment within a community. "We will care when X leaves, not when you leave, X is better than you." So, why should people feel the need to positively contribute to this community when they see things like this? "Don't confuse yourself with people who actually matter" is what people will read out of that. Your attitude towards community here is deeply flawed.

Your completely missing the point. Its not about elitism its the fact that they do so much in game when they left the HAD to do a "ima off to do stuff post".
This is a computer game there are "elite" players be it Kenpo in PvE , RSD in roleplay and Xeno in PvP ( yes i mentioned the alien rage monster).
When they arnt about people notice so its good to be able to say well they posted in the forum that they have left for a bit. Thats all it is I'm sorry if you read different. Its a game not real life not all people are equal here some people are better at the game than others. So when two of the best players this game will ever see leave yeah its more of a deal than someone whos played the game for a month and are off to the newest shiny.
Do have any idea how many people are in or have connections to SECRET? They need to know that SuperC (I think he's the boss man now ...might be Redleaf will need to check) is in charge.
And yes I know Xeno leaves CO every two weeks

Look, champ, Kenpo is a well-known, widely respected player in this game. If he were to go silent without warning, there would be inquiries, rumors, and multiple threads on the topic. Besides, he had some good news to share at the same time.
Sekimen posts a lot, particularly on the topics of the region ban and bubble-helms for animal heads. If he entered radio silence unannounced, there would be concern that PWE didn't want us to discuss those topics. Therefore, it was simply thoughtful of him to let people know.
On the other tentacle, if you or I were to go silent, it's fair odds nobody would even notice, and posting some silly "I QUIT!" thread would be little more than a pitiful cry for attention. Catch the difference? Or are you simply unable to accept that some people attract more notice than others?

I have far more respect for Nepht's response than yours. Your approach seems snide, offputting and generally dismissive of people within the community who might have valid points but lack the time put in to make them "legitimate." Is this really the impression you want to put forward? I'm speaking nothing of my own time spent within this game and it's community, it's not relevant. Bear in mind I am not referencing the act of posting a goodbye thread, in both of those cases mentioned, absolutely valid. I'm talking about tone, and how you respond to people who voice their opinions here. Someone new here, showing up to these forums for the first time, might see this sort of attitude as a barrier to entry within the CO community. Another opportunity to rebuild a community whose population is rapidly declining, lost.
Some people seem to think that someone cares if they stop playing... You stopped playing?

Hi hi! Welcome!
Unfortunately, I stopped playing Champions few days ago. Maybe I'll play it again next time.
I got bored playing by my self. ;(
Combine that with the rather heavy-handed treatment of users with the forum switch, and the seasonal silence disorder that's ever plagued Cryptic, it's not hard to see why some people, even if they've been here for a long time, feel the need to let go.

Annoying people since 2009!

Heh, yeah, I haven't played CO in like a month. Sants Row 3 is the ****, and Steam sales are awesome, but mostly, needed a break from Cryptic.
Actually I only just popped in because of Neverwinter. So excited!! And I don't even like fantasy stuffs.
I'll never *leave* tho. I just may not show up for a while. But I'm irresponsible and unreliable, so nobody will notice anyway
I LOVE YOU ALL!!!
even the ones who smell.

Finally, everything the squirrel said.
So, I guess hasta for now.
*goes into sheep mode and jumps with the rest*
=p.

I am pretty sure mentioning other MMO's isn't allowed on any forums for any game I play....
I would report you, but that feature is gone!!!*

Joking aside I think one of the reasons some people might leave the forums at least is the lack of report button.

you always to your last read post like it did on the old forums, so its often harder
to keep tracking what post you had read at last
I decided to play some other games for a bit now that I bought out everything I want in the C-Store... but I didn't feel the need to make a post about that decision, because I have the common sense and lack of unwarrented ego to know that nobody cares.

That said, the proactive thing to do is to seek to improve things so people won't driven away, and bring in and encourage newbies to stay, be nice and show them the ropes a bit.
You can't change the past, but you can plan for the future and enjoy the present. Remember this quintessential truth.

Doesn't work for me
