Er... I'm pretty sure that the in-game tutorials explain this best. The biggest issue is that you have a system that has smaller and smaller rewards. So a high level mod is less useful than the mod before it, and so on.

I don't see a plethora of 'How do Mods Work' threads in the forums, so this seems ill timed, and very late.

You forgot the most important part...
...You don't need anything above R5 until the level cap increases, so why buy catalysts?

Boy did you nail that one on the head. This is the only reasonable explanation I can think of for why something like this would be posted this far after the On Alert release.

In my honest opinion, the game died with the On Alert patch. It crammed in as many bugs as possible, it killed PvP, it killed Crafting, it killed the World! Nobody goes out exploring the zones anymore. Everyone is stuck in these damn Alerts, which are the weakest and laziest form of Content CO has to offer.

Then they pull everyone out of CO an into other projects so there aren't enough devs around to fix any of this crap.

Now we're about to see the forums die off and 1/4 of the playerbase is getting banned.

PWE, if your plans for the CO community were to jack the prices on everything to weasel out as much money as possible before you yank the plug on CO then you might as well go ahead and yank it. Yank it all night if you have to!

I hope we're a smart enough community as a whole to not give you another sent. I know you won't be getting any from me. Not unless things do a COMPLETE 180 around here.

Then they added Catalysts to the c-store and made them to most RIDICULOUSLY priced items in the ENTIRE history of CO. And we laughed at them for days and days and dozens uppon dozens of pages on the main thread telling them no one would buy them and explaining in great detail exactly why. But they didn't listen to us and kept the prices on the HUNDREDS of dollars just to deck out ONE single toon.

And THAT^ is the reason the stupid Catalysts are not selling (along with Caine's point that you don't need above R5 which was also brought up in that thread while we were laughing at them). Just wanted to add that relevant bit to your post in relation to this topic ;)

Late - yes. But nevertheless useful to to have some information available on the web site for people who do not have the game installed and wants to learn a bit what the game has to offer.

Remember to use Safeguard catalysts instead because they almost do the SAME thing as the upgrade catalysts. Save that they cost only a thousandth of the price.

I got couple of tells after explaining where to go and who to see about getting the basics of the modding. Something like this 'i didn't watch the video i just want to lear how to mod gear'.....'i went to see that guy, some cutscene started, skipped it. so how do i mod gear?'

And that c-store stuff. Never, ever gonna use it. Never. Ever.

At least we can be happy that they don't made everything over R5 soo much better that it isn't worth
    going after them ;)

Imagine ever Rank would give +20 more or whatever

I would buy the rank up Catalysts if I felt that they were more reasonably priced.

And by reasonably priced I do not mean a 20% discount off of a base price that is an order of magnitude (or more) too high.

The third way to get mods is to do Lairs and Comic series, where bosses all have a chance to drop high-end mods.

Got R6 mod at Lairs and that's the highest one I got so far.

Anyone got more higher rank Mod from random drop?

    Ok, let's try this again...
    Attachment not found.

First, Crush, thanks for the info.
That being said, too bad you couldn't share it when we first got the system... weeks ago.
And not before a douche-y (and desperate?) sale...
Painfully obvious what the intent is...

Second, like I said back then:
"Not gonna waste my time trying to get those!"
    (And certainly not money)

Efreeta is decked in R6's, gathered from my old craft mats, and stuff picked in Alerts / nodes, slowly, as a side activity.

World content is a joke (And I'll repeat: Regen toon, by far NOT the best defensive).
Even the cheap attempt at making us suffer against Gravitar can't phase me.
    Bragging?
Maybe. (Yeah obviously, but hey for once I'm proud of a toon... XD)
Or this game is just stupid easy and nothing was done to make it more challenging (in the sense of "smart" challenge).
Unless you consider pushing people away due to cheap techniques as "achieving greater challenge"...

Third, the "most probable" people who could (potentially) have bought those, the PvP min-maxers, you took sweeeet care into p!ssing off and pushing away.
    Bad move, very bad move...

Bah, if you didn't get it by now, you never will: NOT GOING TO BUY THAT SH!T.

Ps: to make it clear, only addressing Crush in point 1. Rest is aimed at the company in general.

I'll be frankly with you Stormshade, and at the same time I will try to not chop down the tree from its feet but I rather buy hundreds of your little Grab bags before I ever touch one of those overpriced catalyst, and who knows how much I hate Grab bags.

This post doesn't explain more what the tutorial video already provides, and if the real point was to inform people (wich isn't the case) you would have explained tu us how Catalyst worked a couples of week ago or when "CO : On Alert" came out. Also you should change a couple sentences in this article because "Safeguard Catalyst" are getting consummed when you succeed a fusion and it would be very shamefull if someone should complain for lying advertisement because of a little in game bug/mistake.

Finally, there is no purpose in this article. All you are trying to do is to sell out a bad marketing decision and you are making another bad decision by taking people for idiots when we clearly learned how those Catalyst worked and a lot of tutorial infos were already added in game.

Nice sales pitch here, but um...
Catalysts are consumed regardless of whether you succeed or fail, but there is a special kind of catalyst: insurance catalysts, which are only consumed if you fail, and will protect you from losing a mod if you do!

    Insurance Catalysts??
I assume you are actually referring to Safeguard Catalysts and that this is a very outdated draft.

Safeguards... which, in reality, are being consumed whether it fails or not.

    Bugs. Fix them, please.

This has been reported previously. The individual who posted that article has been informed about this matter. He chose to make a false statement, fully knowing that it was inaccurate, seemingly for the sake of getting money from those who believed him.

I had a salesman who worked for me a few years back. He used the above described technique to pad his sales numbers. I fired him for lying to our customers and explained to the rest of my staff that a liar, even one whose lies result in short term sales increases, hurts everyone on the team. A customer's ongoing trust is entirely too valuable to waste.

I wonder if Cryptic is willing to take a similar action to bolster their reputation.

I'd like to have these mod's from rank 7-9 actually have a significant jump in stats considering how much work you have to go through just to get those mods. I don't think anyone really is going to spend money on those upgrade catalysts when that stat increase isn't worth the money they are charging. And that 20% off discount still isn't worth it. Increase the stat value for those lvls so people feel like its worth the money to buy the upgrades cause right now its laughable.

I wasn't going to say this, but since the dogpile's here, I will.

I don't give a damn. You don't need mods over level 5 the way your system works unless you're a completist. And if you did need them and I had to buy this crap to enjoy the game again I'd have to ask why I was even bothering to play the game you're determined to ruin for me.

The only problem I've really had with the Mod & Fusion system is that leveling your crafting skill seems to rapidly escalate in difficulty, to the point that even going out of my way to grab extra nodes, I haven't been able to keep up with the tiers on gathering nodes with characters that I've leveled after the change-over. Fusing doesn't really seem to add a lot to that either.

This kinda bugs me, because one of the few things that the old system got RIGHT was that it was fairly easy to keep up with the nodes in the areas you'd quest in, because Researching trash items gave a lot of skill ups.

I understand that the skill rank has become significantly more valuable because now it relates to success chances, but it's incredibly frustrating to out-level gathering nodes, because it means you either need to stop leveling and go back and farm nodes, or stop gathering and fall further and further behind.

    Is there something I'm missing?

    No, you aren't missing anything.
The craft need some patience and effort, but less than in the other mmos, especially the old ones where you wasn't able to be a legendary crafter (maximum level of crafting) in less of 6 months even if you were playing a lot.
The crafting here to be at 400 is a baby craft. :D

PWE, if your plans for the CO community were to jack the prices on everything to weasel out as much money as possible before you yank the plug on CO then you might as well go ahead and yank it. Yank it all night if you have to!.

And you totally nailed that one on the head.

This "crafting tutorial post" (which contains the exact same information you get from Max Planck durring the in-game crafting tutorial, btw.) as a marketing trick for a ridiculously obvious scam implies to me that our PWE managers do not only have the behaviour, but also the IQ of tapeworms.

And seeing that Gentleman Crush is the author just makes me sad. :(

Honestly the should be dropping epic gear and right now they like most of the higher tier bosses dont drop anything or total and complete crap, hell cosmics dont drop anything special all they drop is gear like a normal mob, you could farm viper soldiers and get the same exact drops. This was also pointed out to crush and something else they promised us the Legacy vendor was yet again not added, more broken promises on cryptics part.

Take everything special from the game so they can force feed you crap you never wanted, because that's a great business model.

Ok, you've posted the "Mods and Fusions Guide for Morons", do you have anything new to tell us about it that can't be obtained by taking 5 seconds to experiment with the system? Its really not that hard! I also find keeping your back straight, switching your brain off and wearing padding on your clicking finger really makes the process more manageable. You might want to actually add those to the guide. Some good stuff right there.

Anyway, the sales pitch completely failed. If you actually managed to make sales on the catalyst off of this tripe, then quite honestly you are taking advantage of people who are clearly not right in the head. I hope you are proud of yourselves.

And sorry to anyone who actually did fall for this... I'm sorry. I can't say anymore than that.

We should all file a CS ticket referencing this document and ask where/how these "Insurance Catalysts" may be obtained. I know I'm going to do so. :D

Tell all your friends to do the same.

Maybe if a couple hundred tickets come in this week, someone in charge might notice and changes may result?

this is what i think about all this modding/crafting...

    1. bring back the option to break down equipment to mods, catalysts and safeguards. and allow leveling of skill when equipment are broken down.
    2. if we have a q-hour every odd time, why not have a mod/catalyst/safeguard hour where the drop rate increases by a larger percentage. better yet, if not increase the drop rate, increase the level of mods/catalysts/safeguards dropped.
    3. get rid of the level-based nodes and make the nodes rank up your skill level.
    4. increase the number of nodes by, let's say, 100%.

maybe, just maybe, this might make things more happy in co.

    my 2 pennies, dan =)
