MSA is fine for the EU, if you have enough cds. It may stretch the theme a bit, but adding something like Thunderstrike can allow you to more easily roll MSA offensively from long-range, and give you another self-heal option. I'd also prob change the AoE power to Sonic Boom Gen, as it has decent AoE coverage and seems to be a good fit anyways. Here's an example edit of it:

    Phaser - Freeform (Ranged Damage)
    v3.45:38

    Super Stats
    Level 6: Intelligence (Primary)
    Level 10: Dexterity (Secondary)
    Level 15: Constitution (Secondary)

    Talents
    Level 1: The Specialist (Dex: 10, Con: 10, Int: 8, Rec: 10)
    Level 6: Investigator (Int: 5, End: 5)
    Level 9: Accurate (Dex: 5, End: 5)
Level 12: Boundless Reserves (Con: 5, End: 5)
    Level 15: Coordinated (Dex: 5, Int: 5)
Level 18: Healthy Mind (Con: 5, Int: 5)
    Level 21: Acrobat (Dex: 5, Con: 5)

    Powers
    Level 1: Sonic Blaster
Level 1: Experimental Blaster (Rank 2, Rank 3, Death Ray)
    Level 6: Concentration
Level 8: Targeting Computer (Rank 2, Rank 3)
Level 11: Sonic Boom Generator (Rank 2, Rank 3)
    Level 14: Conviction (Rank 2, Rank 3)
    Level 17: Molecular Self-Assembly
    Level 20: Thunderstrike (Recharge)
    Level 23: Resurgence (Rank 2)
Level 26: Sonic Device (Rank 2, Rank 3)
Level 29: Toxic Nanites (Rank 2, Rank 3)
    Level 32: Retaliation (Rank 2)
Level 35: Evasive Maneuvers (Sleight of Mind)
    Level 38: Thundering Return
    Adv. Points: 36/36

    Travel Powers
Level 6: Hover Disk (Rank 2, Rank 3)
    Level 35: Athletics (Rank 2)

    Specializations
    Intelligence: Preparation (2/2)
    Intelligence: Enlightened (3/3)
    Intelligence: Detect Vulnerability (3/3)
    Intelligence: Expertise (2/2)
    Guardian: Fortified Gear (3/3)
    Guardian: Ruthless (2/2)
    Guardian: Find the Mark (3/3)
    Guardian: The Best Defense (2/3)
    Vindicator: Aggressive Stance (2/2)
    Vindicator: Merciless (3/3)
    Vindicator: Focused Strikes (3/3)
    Vindicator: Mass Destruction (2/3)
    Mastery: Intelligence Mastery (1/1)

It tap-spams Exp Blaster as its main single-target filler (can half-charge it if your target is up-close, to proc Conc that way), and uses charged Sonic Boom Gen as its main AoE attack. In either case, Sonic Device, Toxic Nanites, and taps of TStrike can also be weaved in and can help roll MSA. Gears mostly for Int, w/ some Con.

I'm doing something similar now, made a Buck Rogers themed character. To really get the laser pistol feel, I bought the Pulp Fiction Ray Gun (requiring Two Gun Mojo) and the Qularr Toxic Rifle (requiring Assault Rifle). Set them in the Power replacement trays and changed the Power Variant #1 and #2 to 3 and 4 (to flow in my attach chain).

I'm interrested by your build, could you post it please ? I just got a toxic gun and i'm trying to figure out a themed toon around it.

Protection Field is somewhat of an odd choice for a dps, but overall it looks like a pretty good build.

Thunderstrike's damage isn't going to get boosted by Targeting Computer and Experimental Blaster might be a little underwhelming as your main DPS power. Below is a Gadgeteering build with Pulse Beam Rifle to try to keep within theme. I dropped Protection Field in favor of a self heal. There are some force shield devices you could get to still get something like that in your build without devoting a full power slot to it.

To clarify: I didn't add Thunderstrike in as a main dps attack- rather to be tapped as a fast & cheap MSA proc, and that also has a self-heal adv. I'd still recommend keeping it in the build, at least if using MSA. Overdrive also will not proc on most attacks in that build, PBR is somewhat redundant w/ Exp Blaster + Death Ray (PBR is cheap enough to not really need an EU for it anyways), and the build could prob use a wider-reaching AoE attack that's not on a long cd. Chest Beam is a nice power for the build in terms of debuffing, though, providing it's fitting enough for the concept.

I noticed the original build had Electric Form instead of Targeting Computer. The OP could always switch back to that to benefit more from Thunderstrike. PBR should outperform Exp Blaster for single target damage but Exp Blaster seemed to be a major fit for the OP's theme. It can still make a decent opener followed by PBR.
Between energy from PBR/Overdrive and Concentration, the build will have enough energy to use the other powers as long as the toggle stat (Ego) is geared for. The OP can always continue with using INT and MSA.
Yeah, Gadgeteering and the Tech powers don't have the best AoE and debuff options for Plasma gun theme builds. The OP could get a Power Variant Device, like the laser shotgun, but I didn't want to suggest that since they can be pretty pricey. AoE options like Thunderstrike are good and just depends on the balance the OP wants to make between theme and all of the available options.

Here's a slight variation on the build, if you'd like to incorporate Exp Blaster more into the attack rotation. I swapped out the Guardian Specializations for Avenger, though you could just as easily swap out Vindicator for Avenger instead. With Avenger, you can rotate between Exp Blaster and PBR. PBR will proc Relentless Assault and should setup Exploit Opening and the Avenger Mastery for a faster, larger DPS return on a full Exp Blaster shot. PBR's innate +Crit Chance will help proc Exploit Opening.

You can tap spam Exp Blaster, but I find the bonus damage and auto-kill from Death Ray proc slowly. Usually, I end up basically corpse blasting as they kick in and negate the bonus damage by wasting time on a second, now useless, blast.

Eh, it's prob not worth it to switch to Elec Form just for TStrike's sake. Maybe if you charge the power off cd to make it a bigger component of your net dmg, but not as I originally intended. It's generally better to stick to Targeting Comp if the majority of attacks are still Ranged Tech. That said, one of the decent AoE options lies in going outside of Gadgeteering and picking up something like Elec Current or LStorm (if theme permits), and then I'd prob use Elec Form (or Quantum Stabilizer). In casual testing I didn't find a huge difference between PBR channels and Exp Blaster taps w/ Death Ray, either way (Teddyfication is bad for dps, but it will only proc on weaker trash; PBR is less rng-prone overall, though). But if you did want to use both powers, and for w/e reason, then yeah the Avenger Mastery setup can work fine.

  • Interesting build, I was thinking on doing a build that uses PBR as it's main DPS /w new force powers but PRB is sadly not as strong as it needs to be, hopefully with Force rework out now, Gad is on the next lineup.
