When are we finally going to get custom sidekicks?

captfabulouscaptfabulous Posts: 14 Arc User
Star Trek has BOFFs, Neverwinter has a companion. CO allows you to create a custom Nemesis. But when are we going to get the ability to make custom sidekicks? Considering the sidekick has been a staple of the superhero genre since the beginning it's just unfathomable to me we still don't have them. All the pieces are there, yet for some reason not put together. We have temp sidekicks, we have pets (both controlled and independent), we have a customizable Nemesis... all the pieces Cryptic needs to fashion a custom sidekick.

I'm sure I can't be the only person begging for such a system. I know CO is pretty much on a life-support drip at this point, but adding something new and exciting like this will most certainly draw people back to the game.

well, we know what happens when they touch the Nemesis Creator....¨

But, then again. Things are happening, so you never know.

Never. Hell, getting a new powerset seems like a never, and that's been asked for since...well, I forget
Buffing everything to stupid high levels and nerfing everything to piss poor levels yields the same results, but not the same community reactions.

Both costumizable sidekicks and new power sets (typically water, plant, shields, and staves) have been asked for since the beginning. Will any of those happen? Only time will tell, but, unless something drastically changes in Cryptic, I doubt they will happen.

Vets can already recolor sidekick powers, so it's not completely out there. but iI expect no more than recostuming them. No power choices.

Sadly, I agree - at this point it seems vanishingly unlikely that Spider-Bat will ever adventure with Blackbird at his side. Hope springs eternal, of course...

Yeah - this is something I've wanted for a long time as well. I'd be happy with just being able to change the costume of existing sidekicks.

Changing costume and renaming are as far as I see sidekick customization going.

They must be ready to dump loyal sidekicks 1st, because custom ones will make them obsolete when you can simply create Amp. Now, if they were to give us an Agate template to work with also that would be insane.

Solution: You have to buy a loyal sidekick first, and then you have to buy a Sidekick Costume Change item that lets you change that sidekick's costume. Their powers remain the same.

Works for me. Indy Kid's powerset is about the same as I'd envisioned for Blackbird anyway.

LTS can already recolor sidekick powers. Maybe they'll make it so LTS have the option to pay resources OR use the token?

Thing is we have no idea what sort of UI changes it would take to do this. Sidekick costumes and sidekick power colors are likely a whole different animal. In my head I picture something like the Nemesis terminal, but I don't even know if that's even remotely close to what it would take.

Well the character data would need to be modified to hold the custom sidekick costume. Then modify the sidekick powers to use that... at least some of them. Some of them aren't humanoid and might look weird if you reskinned them to look human.

I am fine with that, so basically use the current sidekicks as templates or character slots? If so, that could get interesting with Agate. Unless Agate simple reverts to the default guy in the blue tights.

Another way to do it could be that it copies your own costume to the sidekick when you use the token. That wouldn't require any new sort of UI thingy, but what would happen if your character and your sidekick have a different gender photo.jpg

The key is how they could monetize it. Spinny's idea is probably the best way they can do this. They can continue to milk old devices while placing newer aesthetics for them in the C-Store, because development cost money and time. An example would be ankle bracelets for Agate or maybe a cyborg skin for him. They could also sell name change tokens for it. The money factor of custom sidekicks is actually far superior to pre-made sidekicks tbh. I guess it will also cost and take a bit more time to implement also.

I would personally like to see some Monster Island devices, such as Mega-Terak & Qwyjibo, or Megaladon. Allow us to customize it with preset aesthetics designed specifically for them. I am sure there are certain things they can add to these bosses to supe them up aesthetically. Make them the size of this guy

The money is there, it now takes effort on their end to get there. All hope is not lost. There was a topic about costume change emotes last year. They also took into consideration the outcry over subscription features. If enough people want it, I think they will do it. Even for sidekicks like Agate and the Spider bot. I would not expect it to be as diverse as player customization though.

In STO you customize your BOFFs' appearance just like you do your own, in the costume creator. We do that in CO with the Nemesis, so this shouldn't be any different.

From a backend perspective they would need to expand the database to accommodate custom sidekick data. Whether or not that's possible I don't know. That could be a very real limitation. One possible way to skirt around it might be to sacrifice one of your own costume slots and have it designated as a sidekick costume.

In my mind I see us being able to buy a blank sidekick that we can then name, customize appearance, and like our Nemesis, pick a powerset (but not individual powers).

More likely if we get SK customization we'll just change the way our extant sidekick looks.

    What is SK?

Willing to bet custom sidekicks will outsell anything currently in the store. With a freeform tokens, do you really need to buy 3 spinoffs on the Blade archetype? Once you buy costumes, there is no need to buy it again, obviously.

If we get it, I want custom Agate, Spider-bot, Rex and even the dino follower device skins. Cyborg skins, lava, ice, the ability to mix and match. I just always liked the beast sidekicks better than the people. I may be the minority, or the few weird people. Repetitive comments, but I like those animals. Moar animals.

Hmm that does seem interesting. But... I don't think those assets are tailorable.

They can be, I doubt they will be, to your point. They can add a tailor which showcase these sidekicks with a few skin changes. I am not saying it has to be vast like the human system.

But about more realistic custom sidekicks, it would be neat if their costume emote changes when yours does. Like both of your costumes change simultaneously.

Give sidekicks a nemesis maybe? So there will be sidekick nemesis arcs. Your current nem teams with your sidekicks nem.

The great thing about custom sidekicks is it will make low level raids faster. Nearly everyone will have them, so that is an extra body per person. It will also help with heals, if we could choose powers. I am assuming it will help for the Save Earth raid? I have not played them so I do not know how sidekicks do there.
