Super Shrinker and Magnifier

menempomenempo Posts: 7 Arc User
SO it came to my attention that after YEARS of beinga thing. The Super S&M are now incompatible of use together. Its been a thing for more half a decade so... My biggest question now, WHY all of the sudden we cant use them together anymore?

So here's my suggestion, allow players to use both Super Magnifier and Shrinkers together.

Hey removed it because it was a super important bug.

    So...suggestion won’t happen

I saw this yesterday, and I was really sad. I used to use the combo during my shows so my character stands out more without being absurdly massive. It was also great for RP purposes, when your character is meant to be taller than the max height, but not a massive giant.

we're more likely to get a new magnifier that's less giant.

I'd be ok with that, but I doubt it'll actually happen.

This. The suggestion shouldn't be "Let us continue using something that the devs said is an unintended feature and can result in an exploit (that they won't/can't explain because ofc you shouldn't talk about exploits)."

There should be a 3rd item which allows you to get a height that is not so super giant. ALSO, put that item in the exchange vendor so you can trade in either a super mag or shrinker to get it.

I really can't see why an "exploit" that has been fixed and is no longer exploitable can't be talked about or explained by the devs.

I'm going to say it's because there was no exploit from using both devices together. But they couldn't think of any other reason to fix something that's been around since the devices were created, and people have grown to enjoy. Using the excuse "fixing an exploit" probably limits the amount of backlash from the fans.

Then what possible reason can there be for the devs actually taking the time and effort to "fix" it?

Without an explanation from those in the know, I'm stumped by it.

maybe that whole thing about "we don't know"... I mean Kais didn't actually say what the exploit was.

Most growth exploits have actually involved becoming super-large (and that's also what stresses the server); I suspect the growth+shrinking change is collateral damage from fixing whatever that one was.
  • markhawkmanmarkhawkman Posts: 4,916 Arc User
it's possible that it was causing the server to have to do an annoying amount of calculation every time it drew the character.

    This is it, right here.

If that's the reason (and it seems a likely one), the devs explaining it could have stopped a lot of the complaining (not all, of course) about it that's going on in-game and, to a lesser extent, here on the forums.

I understand the fixing of bugs is often viewed as a bad thing and that devs are 'taking your fun away.'

To me such a statement is absurd. The developers want the game to be fun, we want happy players, we want the game we work on to thrive, because y'know, it's our job.

We don't do things out of spite, upsetting players and taking away things for the giggles makes no financial sense.

If a bug is addressed, that strongly indicates that it had some sort of negative impact on the game and fixing it would be more beneficial than not.

We won't always give a detailed explanation on how a bug worked or how it specifically negatively impacted the game when we address them. We don't want to run risks if its able to be reproduced again.

A mistake I see a lot of people make is assume that a bug is harmless because they personally have not seen any ill effects of it. If a bug that players enjoyed was truly harmless, then in all likelihood it would be made into a feature or just left alone. If it's fixed, then there are strong implications that it was doing something to cause harm to the game/player experience.

We are aware there are other bugs. Some bugs are super easy to fix, others take days/weeks to investigate, find the cause and implement a fix. We don't always have that kind of time to dedicate. It doesn't mean we won't eventually get to them, it just might take some time.

I think trying to reduce the amount of complaining in the game or on these forums is by this point well known to be a pointless endeavor. Even if they gave a detailed explanation, then the complainers will just complain about something in the explanation.

Didn't need detailed explaining imo, just needed a shorter version of Kai's last post.

Stopping it is, of course, pretty impossible. It could have been reduced though.... in-game also.

Thanks for replying to the OP and the other person who was frustrated by it in this thread, @kaizerin :)

To you saying it was harmless fun...it’s not harmless, the devs like three post up said it wasn’t.

Hell...you even repeated it. Yet you keep saying it was harmless fun.

    It’s not harmless fun.

Doesn’t matter what other developers do.

Growth exploits cause issues. End of story.

What do growth exploits have to do with this? The topic is on stacking two items which result in a slightly bigger character.

I have no idea what the nature of any exploits the stacking behavior of these items may have caused.

Irrelevant if you do. The dev pretty much came in here and said it did. The dev also said they may not be able to give an outright explanation of why, to avoid anyone reproducing it.

With that said a middle level growth modifier like was said earlier in the thread is a great suggestion.

Best info I have(which might be guesswork) is that it caused the game to do a bunch of extra work rendering characters. How much problem is that? I dunno, but Kais decided it needed fixed.

I did notice this for awhile, but took off the two devices, cuz a few things where annoying me about it, but a bug is a bug. On the other hand, I won't mind getting a new Leg Size/Height in-game to fit the old size we had before with the devices (or just a device to get that high)

Probably a good example of bug vs feature
  • markhawkmanmarkhawkman Posts: 4,916 Arc User
Bugs are sometimes useful! That doesn't make them features though.
