Until a few days ago, due to some computer problems only recently dealt with, I hadn't logged in to the game since around October...
...and it seemed not only had nothing changed or improved, but things have actually degraded, considering how very few people there were of an already small populus, and how none of the bugs and glitches that have existed for over a year now are still untouched.
Is there any saving this game, or is it just a slow downhill slide that's picking up speed?
Seriously, what the hell is Cryptic doing to earn their paychecks? What am I gaining from continuing to pay them for all this?

We got new costumes (really nice ones) and new vehicles which is what we have gotten for the majority of the year.
So that is a plus.
There are glitches that have existed since the beginning of the game so bugs being around is nothing new.
Cryptic/PWE has many games which bring in money, that is how they earn paychecks. Cryptic North works on other games as well.
This game is not in danger of closing, it is too cheap to maintain.
Though we will never see a huge build up of people playing for long periods because we will never get the content to do so. Might as well enjoy what you get or play something else.

But that's all it feels like is being done. Being maintained. Not improved, or expanded, or even repaired.
Like someone just swings by every few days to make sure the hamsters running in the wheels keeping the server powered-up havent died, and that's about it.
Sure, every once in a while they throw a new vehicle or costume at us, but what's the real incentive to keep playing if nothing substaintial gets added, if none of the long-persistent bugs get repaired. People who started playing years ago, people who picked up the game last week, and people who won't start playing until next year or later, all have the same stale "endgame" grinding, with nothing else to look forward to and nothing from the devs to say what's on the horizon.
It feels like they've just stopped caring about this game the way they used to. Like they made the game, kicked it off into the water to fend for itself, and moved on elsewhere.
I pay $15/month for this game... why should I keep doing that, if nothing really changes?
But that's all it feels like is being done. Being maintained. Not improved, or expanded, or even repaired.
Well, you are kind of correct. Though who knows. Maybe they are doing something that they just cant talk to us about? I guess it just depends on how optimistic you want to be a bout it. But you are not wrong for feeling like that. Though every year it slows down to a halt around now.
Like someone just swings by every few days to make sure the hamsters running in the wheels keeping the server powered-up havent died, and that's about it.
Again, can't blame you for feeling this way. Actions being louder than words, I do not blame you.

Well, when they did tell us, we as a community got mad when things changed or never happened (even if they were on the "This stuff may not happen" list. Plus, maybe they dont know what is next. That is less likely, as they probably just are not allowed to tell us for whatever reason. the main thing to remember is that the stuff we have gotten from Cryptic North has at least been high quality.
It feels like they've just stopped caring about this game the way they used to. Like they made the game, kicked it off into the water to fend for itself, and moved on elsewhere.
I doubt they quit caring, but knowing Cryptic I would not put it against them for moving people who prove to be great at their jobs to NWO or STO. It has happened in the past.
I pay $15/month for this game... why should I keep doing that, if nothing really changes?
I cannot say that you should. I am one of the first Life Timers in this game, and I come here to RP. I enjoy it, but I would not pay $15/month for what we get. Pay what you feel this game is worth to you and if you think the Gold perks are worth the money.
The last 40 minutes of playable content added in the past 2 years have been great! I'm not even including the hour of waiting in rampages for them to automatically end.
me, I have a LTS acct, a gold acct and a silver acct.
But don't worry, you didn't miss much.
we still have the same half dozen people talking for hours(ok not always hours, though the record was all of a Saturday, the same person was complaining), on how badly CO is doing and bad a game it is, picking holes in as many areas as possible.
Good way to scare off as many new people as possible, while asking "why aren't more people playing or staying around?"
ON my silver account, I got to listen to this, for the first 3 hours of play. They'd stop or someone would change the subject and then they'd start again.
Out of the 400+ people in that SG, 40 got past level 8. I think about 68 played for more than a week.
I noticed several groups of new people just standing talking in local and then vanishing.
Then we have the,
I'm not spending any money on the game until they spend a lot on it.
I'm not spending any money on the game till they do a major expansion.
I'm not spending any money on it until they fix the part I like.
I'm not spending any money on it till they stop fixing things.
I'm not spending any money on it till they do fix things.
I took a chance, went ahead and spent money on an LTS before I saw the changes so many demand.
And was promptly rewarded with new costume sets, two new vehicles I actually want to be seen using, and one free ugly vehicle for each toon I had at the time. (Can't be swapped, sadly, but that means I can move other vehicles over to cover new toons.)
So maybe "not spending money on the game until they do" isn't such a reasonable standard after all, guys? Just sayin'...

As a new player and someone who has worked in the IT field, I feel like I should probably pipe up here. First of all I think it's kind of unreasonable to expect something that wasn't fixed for a year or whatever to be fixed in the past couple of months. I'd imagine they have fixed some things, but bugs have to be prioritized and you're also expecting new content.
From what I have read, the team working on this game has been poached for other departments and is kind of small. If the numbers I have read here are correct we should congratulate them for getting just about anything done. I think it's kind of insulting to say they aren't earning their paychecks while not putting money into the game - I mean isn't that part of the problem? It's not cheap to hire and hold onto qualified staff who would be in high demand and being in a situation like that wouldn't be something that lends itself well to retention. The people working must be dedicated considering I have read threads like this going back years. I know if I was working somewhere that the reactions were like that and I kept seeing people on my team leave, I'd probably begin to wonder.
This kind of stuff is for the most part par for the course in the MMO world. I mean there are always going to be people who wonder why the bug or feature they wanted addressed isn't and threatening to quit. But it does seem like there's a lot of negativity on this forum. I would like to echo the concern above that this kind of thing can have a tendency to scare people off. It was enough to give me pause, for sure. I mean, who wants to get involved in a game that they think is going to die any month now, much less put down for an LTS?
And that's where we get to the heart of it. In the end these games are maintained by corporations. They will allocate more resources if they see more money potential, and the teams will be able to do more if they have more resources. In turn customers are more likely to support a product that they see someone getting behind. It all goes hand in hand.
The fact they are keeping this game going and still producing something at least means someone is doing their job. Just keeping the lights on and the servers humming is a lot in itself, much less keeping the code stable and whatnot. This game has been going for years despite naysaying and that is saying a lot in a market like this. I think it's something worth supporting, and I think if you want more stuff the best way to do it is to get more people playing and keep them playing. That's what a community is about. We can't write the code, fix the bugs, or whatever, but what we can do is provide a welcoming environment that helps people enjoy the game. For all the rest, in the end, the fact there are still players who care about that and are willing to help new people makes me believe in it enough to support it. Go for the gold!
P.S. For what it's worth, I've spent the last 6 weeks or so trying out a number of Free to Play games including STO and NWO. Being a bit out of the loop as far as what has been available in that market, I have to say I was pretty astounded by the quality of games that depend on micropayments yet don't really force you to spend money to enjoy the game. I thought a lot about whether I should just keep seeing how much you can do free or put my currently pretty limited cash in by way of thanks, and if so where. I decided to support this game even though I am a hard core fan of Star Trek and Dungeons and Dragons (granted more of an old-school guy, but whatever). I'd even specced out the system I got myself for Christmas with STO in mind! That's not to say I won't spend something elsewhere eventually, but this was my choice for now. I'm probably going to go LTS in the next couple of months, even, and that's not something I would have considered before. Thinking about this thread kind of clenched that for me. It's also given me an idea for a signature.

Do you like this game? Do you want it to get better? Put your money where your mouth is! Go for the Gold!
STO &N NW are cryptic's favoured games. They get regular updates and even more regular cash shop items.
I have an acct on each. STO is better than NW, in my opinion.
You would have to play both yourself to see which you like best. That said, I have 3 accounts on this game.
STO is on Tier 6 ships now.
NW has just recently got a new set of artifact gear to collect.
PvP in both seems to have a problem , one with unmatched groups and one with queue wait time
NW's current problem, is that to deal with all the gold sellers, refining items especially artifacts is harder due to a lower drop rate of now, non transferable ,refining mats from enchants.
Foundry is 90% farms, they did a wipe end of November and got it to 175 NON farm missions.
4 days later it was up to 1100+ . guess what they rest were.
STO iI found the missions to be definitely better than NW's.
Haven't tried the Foundry yet but people seem to like it better than the NW one.
crafting systems on both are remote use ones. You set and forget.
I think it's kind of insulting to say they aren't earning their paychecks while not putting money into the game
I think so too.
Unfortunately, being a hypocrit is the hottest hippest new thing. It's totally popular to say "I won't pay until they put enough work in" while also saying "I won't work until you pay me"...cause let's face it, if any of the the people who say they won't pay until the game improves showed up at work and the boss said "No more paychecks until you work harder", they'd quit on the spot (though I have this weird theory that most of those people don't have jobs anyway).
Yes OP the game is and has been a stagnant thing for the span of its life.
What people call growth might count if they hadnt also taken away things that once existed that many like myself who left in weary disgust still miss.
Power replacers and the original fun flavor text filled items we could craft and find being another major one.
While even I agreed and often pointed out how the cheesy silver aged setting was to silly hearted to hold most mature aged gamers one of the places I never minded that cheesy goodness was in the items flavor text. Collecting them just to link to fellow cheese fans was a major social aspect of this game in its first year and something that still exist in a legacy sense to this day.
When you show some newb the flux capacitor they will think its some kind of uber rare epic item rather then something utterly pointless in this games current era of power creep out gear.
The fact is they started that trend of nerfing or removing the cool things while changing things to increase the power of players in the dull old way of numbers.
I still recall on my character, a simple guy named Ninja here in CO in the first month of live he was lucky enough to almost the first time he fought one of them wannabe chinese storm magician types and got the magicians Dust. At this time it was an unlimited use item and it just made me love the game way more then City of Heroes because they had the balls to create perma power items, allowing far more build diversity then the free form creator had even seemed capable of.
However certain factions, mainly among the wannabe PvP faction who said that only a characters build should be allowed demanded that temp items in general be temp and pretty much useless.
Other nifty items that should of been the icon to hold up and follow suit of like the gun slingers legacy a primary offense slot item that also allowed a decent dmg cone attack very useful in pvp and pve up until the lvl 20 range or so all painted potential in this game, that then was seen as something to stamp out and wipe away from the game rather then expand upon.
So in a way the fan bois are right the game hasnt truly stagnated its actually more like a stagnant bog that is now steadily drying up so that the few things that lived in it that one could appreciate wither away.

I think of all the genuinely cool, funny, helpful, kind, smart, decent people who used to frequent this forum, but no longer do so.
And then I see that skylyger still pops up all too regularly to spew his crap.
There is no justice in the world.
Those who have the most negative things to say about the game, shall also be the ones who stick around the forums the longest. If the game ever does shut down and the forum disappears with it, people like Sky will probably start their own forum just to keep complaining about it

And then I see that skylyger still pops up all too regularly to spew his crap.
There is no justice in the world.
These three words sum up your tired, old, boring rhetoric.

to the OP,
meet Skylyger, who if I remember correctly;
doesn't play CO (he is still annoyed at the Launch day patch. edit: and is justifiably annoyed at his acct being lost when ownership changed.)
hasn't played for a long time
and admits, they don't play mmos at all
That is you , isn't it Skylyger?
aren't you also the person that stated, if anyone at your school, shows an interest in the game. You tell them to not bother.
or is that another of our forum ghouls?
If so I apologize and still want to know, how long since you played ?

Those who have the most negative things to say about the game, shall also be the ones who stick around the forums the longest. If the game ever does shut down and the forum disappears with it, people like Sky will probably start their own forum just to keep complaining about it

I think at this point I'm having more fun with the boards than I am with the game. O_o

yes that's a good example of his lack of thinking.
You want a better one, read Laughingalex's signature in CoT forums.
