    Heroes of the 1930s

    fantastic-novels-pulp-movie-poster-1948-1020409633.jpg

The age of early talking pictures brought a new sense of wonder to the world, especially the United States. Pulp heroes like The Shadow, Doc Savage, and authors such as Edgar Rice Burroughs (arguably the greatest influence on science fiction and fantasy writing at the time), E.E. Doc Smith (creating new vistas of grand, galaxy-spanning conflict with heroes that were both intelligent and capable in the Lensman series and Triplanetary), and H.P. Lovecraft (Cthulhu mythos, mysterious gods from beyond time and space that could shatter a person's psyche). Authors like Robert E. Howard created his pulpy seminal work Conan the Barbarian.

Using these as a starting point, create a costume that harkens back to these imaginative days, when science fiction was unfettered by modern scientific knowledge and respected for their wide vision, and fantasy novels were allowed to have images of buxom, scantily clad females in distress looking on as their muscular heroes charged in to save the day.

    Rules:
    No switching.
Auras, Powers and Travel Powers allowed as long as they do not interfere with other contestants.\
Those using enlargers and/or with large wing spans should occupy the back row.
Those using shrinkers should definitely occupy a square in the front row.

    RESULTS
(6+BEST as Sapphiechu couldn't decide and just went crazy handing out prizes)
Saintwalker, Random, Lord Lionheart, The Sin and Survivor all received honorable mentions.
Ace Brenton (great man-of-science, man-of-action look)
Lord Maxwell (Best, most manliest handlebar mustache)
    Bubble Pop (female gangster look)
    Manhunter (female anti-hero/vigilante)
    MCR Magician (male gangster)
    The Arachnid (male anti-hero/vigilante)
Best in Show: CTHULHU (for his amazing recreation of H. P. Lovecraft)

    Follow the Yellow Brick Road

    51c5a4ffb19bfd27cf2df64984134a9e74161e72.jpg

It is 1939, and on August 15th, just two days ago, Frank Baum's incredible story, The Wizard of Oz, opened in Hollywood. No one was ever quite prepared for the movie adaption, and the stunning differences between the stark, dry black-&-white footage, to then be presented with a glorious riot of color (arguably one of the single most colorful sets in Hollywood history) in the Munchkin Village, brought Technicolor to the masses in a huge way.

The story of Dorothy, a poor Kansas girl lost in a land 'over the rainbow', along with her dog, a scarecrow without a brain, a tinman without a heart and a lion without courage, is now one of the single most well known stories of all time. The wicked witch motif can thank influence from the production design of this film. Singing, dancing, adventure, heartbreak and production design that stretched the limits of both credibility and the pocket book have made this movie into a cultural icon.

In remembrance of this incredible achievement, August 17 Patriot Act Costume Contest will be inspired by the Wizard of Oz and it's lasting legacy. The following categories are open to interpretation (these are NOT for clones, but interpretations of the theme):

    1. Mechanical Woodsman – Bring back the heyday of mechanical timber management and give us your best interpretation of a wood-cutting tinman.
    2. Straw-Stuffed Guard – With the magic that gives the scarecrow life, it stands to reason there were other straw-stuffed beings that held similar jobs.
    3. Bravery-lacking Creatures – The war between good and evil has many victims. Not only lions were forced to cower in the dark forest of Oz.
    4. Kansas City Girl & Pet (duo) – What if Wizard of Oz happened in the modern age? What would Dorothy and her pet dog look like?
    5. Just who WAS the Wicked Witch, anyway? – There is an internet discussion that often follows the line that Glinda, the so called 'fair witch', was actually a sadistic psychopath. Portray this pink, puffy witch in a way that might show that darker side to her character.
    6. And Flying Monkeys Might Launch out of my… – Flying monkeys? REALLY? Show us your best alternative flying minion that would put an airborne simian to shame!
    7. The Previous Wizard – Who was in charge of Oz before the wizard arrived? What power did he hold in the city? Was it even a wizard at all? Perhaps a sorceress, or real witch?

Seven category winners, plus there might be some HMs and special extra prizes.

    Rules:
    No switching.
Auras, Powers and Travel Powers allowed as long as they do not interfere with other contestants.
Those using enlargers and/or with large wing spans should occupy the back row.
Those using shrinkers should definitely occupy a square in the front row.

    RESULTS
Mechanical Woodsman — Traegon the Mighty
    Straw-Stuffed Guardian — Makumba
    Cowardly Creatures — Sa' Vage
Kansas Girl & Pet (duo) — Mia & Upy
    Evil Glinda — Piffle
    Flying Minion — The Skyfoogle
    Wizard — Ruby Kitten

    (honorable mention: Ma'skaat)

    BALLROOM BLITZ!

    b07d6c5556d36b06f493252cb389c21a4d9e5f30.jpg

It was January 27, 1973. The British glam-rock band, The Sweet, were forced offstage when an audience in Kilmarnock, Scotland threw bottles. Band members Nicky Chinn and Mike Chapman sat down and used this event to inspire them, creating one of the years greatest hits: Ballroom Blitz!

    Lyrics • Youtube Link

For giggles, I have decided that this weeks Costume Contest will honor this peace of glam-rock history with some homages. I am looking for the following homages:

The Man in the Back (two prizes)
The Girl in the Corner (two prizes)
    Kilmarnock Bottle Thrower (one prize)
    The Sweet Band (four-person group)

    Rules
    No switching.
Auras, Powers and Travel Powers allowed as long as they do not interfere with other contestants.
Those using enlargers and/or with large wing spans should occupy the back row.
Those using shrinkers should definitely occupy a square in the front row.

    RESULTS
Sadly, due to the double XP weekend causing a small turnout, there were less entries than category winners – SO EVERYONE THAT TURNED UP WON! Thank you to those that attended.

    Caprice Cocktails

    800px-Flaming_cocktails.jpg

After a long day of heroics, where better to lean back and enjoy a nice drink but the exclusive Club Caprice? Serving only superheroes, metahumans, and the few mundane humans that can afford the cover charge, Caprice is the go-to place for high (and sometimes airborne) society up-and-comers to rub shoulders with the heroes that protect their lives, businesses and property from supervillains. Of course, supervillains sometimes come hang out too, but Club Caprice is an informally agreed neutral ground, and it is not entirely unheard of for a hero and their 'pet' villain to be found in a corner chatting about old times or discussing ways to turn one or the other to their point of view.

Knocking back a rum-&-coke or a beer is all very well, but Caprice is known for it's unique, in-universe drinks. With this in mind, this special costume contest will be about the drinks of Club Caprice. Categories are thus:

Narcola – Superhero Soda, officially endorsed by The Champions!
Grond Juice – Mixed drink that really packs a punch!
Silverback's Smash-It-Back – You'll go bananas for it! (Alcoholic banana smoothie)
Moreau Meritage – A deviously spliced hybrid of red wines!
VIPER Venom: A glowing green cocktail with the tangy taste of Draysha!
Super Ultra Kitty Juice – An energy shot imported from Japan. DRINK WITH EXTREME CAUTION.

Each category winner will receive 50G.

    But there's more!

Once the category winners are chosen, there will be a best of picked from these prize winners, chosen by YOU, the entrants. That winner will be receiving a brand new, equipped, still-with-the-dealer-sticker, not even run in, NAGINATA ALPHA!

    RULES

    No switching.
Auras, Powers and Travel Powers allowed as long as they do not interfere with other contestants.
Those using enlargers and/or with large wing spans should occupy the back row.
Those using shrinkers should definitely occupy a square in the front row.

    Night of the Assassins

    rogue___shadow___assassin_by_lucasparolin-d5pvogo.jpg

    Original image by LucasParolin

Assassination has long been a method of political one-upmanship, disposing of opponents before they are prepared to face you in 'fair' one-on-one combat, or simply to remove a powerful player from the political or strategic stage. The word itself is said to come from the Arabic Hashishin, literally 'users of hashish', used as a derogatory term by their opponents in the Middle Ages. The term hashishiyya or hashishi as used by Muslim sources is used metaphorically in its abusive sense (i.e. "social outcasts", "low-class rabble", etc.), while the literal interpretation of this term in referring to the Nizaris (as hashish consuming intoxicated assassins) is rooted in the fantasies of medieval Westerners.

Winners of the following Assassin categories were:

    • Hashishin — Shinomaru
    • Elven — Faye Na'ran
    • Alien — LV426
    • Tech — Palace Guard
    • Ninja — Misfit
    • Robot — Black Jack
    • Cold War — Silver Belle
    • Clown — Bronze Monkey

    Eight winners of 50G each.

    Time & Place
    4:30pm Server Time
    Millennium City Powerhouse Theater.

Auras, Powers and Travel Powers allowed as long as they do not interfere with other contestants.

    CYBORG

    eefb1c98f8089afc6982aacbc3f3e074b358d013.jpg
A cyborg (short for "cybernetic organism") is a being with both organic and biomechatronic parts. See for example biomaterials, bionics, and biomechatronics. The term was coined in 1960 by Manfred Clynes and Nathan S. Kline. D. S. Halacy's Cyborg: Evolution of the Superman in 1965 featured an introduction which spoke of a "new frontier" that was "not merely space, but more profoundly the relationship between 'inner space' to 'outer space' – a bridge...between mind and matter."

    — Wikipedia entry, October 21, 2014

During this time of undead invasion by undead superheroes killed by an arguably undead ex-nazi psychopath, it is only fitting that we completely ignore all that undead stuff and, instead, do something very much close to everyone's hearts with the costume creator: CYBORGS!

    Categories as follows:

Production Model Cyborg: the cyborg that is the most all-round performer.
Heavy Weapons Cyborg: a monster-sized cyborg that carries serious firepower.
Covert Ops Cyborg: stealth mission specialist (Please, no stealth aura. This is about your costume, not your aura)
Corporate Security Cyborg: suit and tie optional; clean, smart appearance mandatory.
Air Support Cyborg: Flight-capable cyborg with low-drag bodywork.
Home-Built Cyborg: If you only had Jury-Rig™ to rebuild you.
Sexy Cyborg: part eye-candy, part body guard, all exotic materials
