One of the greatest aspects of Champions Online is that you can chat with people while not in game!

How to set up your out of game chat:

You need to have gold status in Champions Online or Star Trek Online, XMPP goes through the Public Test Channel which requires a subscription.
Download Pidgin or Trillian. Both are free multi chat programs.

Trillian
On the upper left hand corner click Manage Accounts, Add New Account then select Jabber/XMPP.
Type in your Perfect World username followed by @crypticspace.com, then enter your password.
Example: name@crypticspace.com
Under settings make sure the host is crypticspace.com and the port 5222.

Pidgin
Click Accounts, Manage Account, and Add.
Type in your Perfect World username and password.
Under Domain type in crypticspace.com.
Under Advanced make sure the port is 5222.

And you're done! You will now see your CO friends listed in chat and can send them messages.

Joining Custom Chat Channels:
Trillian
Click on the Jabber/XMPP Icon and select Join a Conference.
Type in the channel name you want to view.

Hit okay and the chat channel will pop up.

Pidgin
Click Buddies then Add Chat.
Select your cryptic account.
Under Room type in the chat channel.

I can only suggest to recheck your account info. I haven't encountered any problems like that.

This is available only to gold members. At one time, you also had to have an account on the test server.

Could either of these be the issue, Gradii?

What are you using as your resource? And you could always do what I advised some months ago and post the output of your help>debug.

I was about to be all excited to be able to chat with friends outside the game (I don't have access to play atm), and then I read... You need to have gold status... I'll go to my corner now ><

But otherwise thanks for making clear and concise directions Kaizerin!

I posted some instructions for this over a CORP, with pictures. Maybe a retelling will help.

The name of the character you want to use for chat.

So assuming you want Sylviana@Dazee to be used when you are chatting with pidgin, you enter Sylviana in your resource field. Also make sure you use your CO username as your pidgin username, that is not necessarily the same as your handle, having those the same is even discouraged from a security standpoint.

You don't have to put anything there.

I've had things bug out when not setting a resource, if you don't put anything there it should give you an "IM" character name, but that does not always work well.

Then we're back at the start, post the output of the debug window

Well where that goes wrong is the "Invalid username or password." part.
If CO itself does accept those login credentials, there is something not configured correctly on the chat server. So you'll have to contact CS for that.
But just to be sure, you do have to use your CO username, not your handle. Of course those can be the same, but that is not recommended.

I don't even know the difference between CO username and handle.

Only after you made your CO account with a username and password you had to chose a handle. If I remember correctly the account setup advised you to not use your username there.
If the legacy CO launcher and in game login uses dazee, that is fine for pidgin, just not recommended.

that may be the problem, legacy launcher uses a different name.

how do I set it up so I have DaZee displayed in game to people when I chat, and my login name used for setting up out of game chat?

You don't set up anything, it does that on its own. Just like you don't have to set things up when you log in to the normal game. Just use the same username as in the legacy launcher, none will be able to see it.

Edited the first post to make it clear you need to be using your perfect world account name. Did not think the old cryptic accounts worked for logging in anymore.

I just logged in today, and I *had* to use my old cryptic account. If you converted, seems that's how it has to be, for at least some of us. Tried eviltaco and chalupaoffury, nothing. my old legacy login name was the only way to get in.
In game, I am @EvilTaco. Happily killing purple gang members since May 2008.

I'd like to add something to this. After a year of trying to figure out how to get jabber work, and many fruitless attempts at guessing, I broke down and asked customer service what my account name was. It turned out I didn't have one when I created my account. After a useless back and forth that went on far too long, I realized they weren't going to give me an account name. So stuck with this problem, I sought out help and found it.

If you only have an email for a log in use \40 in place of the @ in your e-mail name. So if your log in is bob@email.com you'd put in bob\40email.com@crypticspace.com

    I hope this helps someone.

Looking for an XMPP solution to keep in touch with your Cryptic chat channels from a fansite?

    Check this out.

It's fully functional and open source, and it's mostly JS/JSON.

Strangely enough I know a friend who had to use his old Cryptic account name for external chat. I have to use my PWE one. And we are both near launch players who had to convert.

Not sure if anyone else has had this issue, but I followed this bit until I got to the drop down menu. My Menu only has channels.crypticspace.com. Nothing else.

    Any suggestions?

BTW, I'm able to connect to custom channels no problem.

How is this going to work in STO now that Gold status is being phased out there?

Is this a question for the STO forums?
