The do look similar enough. Color scheme is kept consistent and the faceplate is always simplified image of noseless human face.
Applied to the Defenders design it would translate to keeping his blue-white scheme and a variation of his art-deco faceplate, and modernising the rest.
He had different armors in the past, but they were, ugh... Terrible. They had all marks of something that was, unlike his 6th ed armor, not designed by professional designer working for Cryptic.
Especially his 5th ed "I-am-generic-western-tokusatsu-fan--kitbashed-with-biker-helmet" suit.
Current Cryptic design should be the baseline for further redesigns.
Yes, defender's look is iconic and it's very important that we keep it true to his profile, because he's a flagship character both for the pnp game and CO.
And we absolutely cannot deviate from it.
In game, I am @EvilTaco. Happily killing purple gang members since May 2008.

Considering what they did with the drifter, I agree with the statement despite the obvious sarcasm.
Speaking as an old time Hero fan, I prefer the Cryptic Defender design. Tweaking it further with the new costume set would not be a bad thing; it might silence some old player complaints about the exposed jaw and neck (even though those were adjusted and there are plenty of comic book antecedents that share that feature without complaints).

^Almost funny. Exept this is weak and flawed design for the hero costume on the more than one level. Starting from being faceless, to the color scheme.
And the best thing Cryptic did to Defender was to replace this homebrew thing with something professionally designed.
Continue being sarcastic as much as you'd like, but it means nothing.
Believe it or not, but there is actual theorycraft behind what constitutes for well designed costumes in comic books, and what does not.
Cryptics design fits the bill, but this one.... Not really.

Not the same level.
I for one think they should bring back the old look and color it black and red
That is the best idea I have ever heard, all the greats have done it! Fantastic four anyone? Genius.
And now I feel compelled to draw this...
Oh... Okay then.
A Playlist of my CO PvP video's (starting from post nerf PTS team duels)
