The joy of daughters...

My daughter is in 3rd grade. She brought home a note from the teacher and she was in tears she was so devastated...mainly because she knows not to ever get into trouble at school. Well, the past few years that whole "bully" thing has gone into full motion, and the note said her teacher wanted a parent conference with me due to a bullying incident.

I asked her what happened and she said she didn't know because she really didn't...I found out why later.

So I go to see the teacher during her conference hours and she gets my daughter to come sit in while the teacher talks with me. Come to find out, she has been pushing this boy a lot and slamming doors in his face, and at the time, she pushed him and he got hurt, so naturally, his parents complained of bullying and unwarranted violence.

Keep in mind that my daughter is really small for her age...probably one of the smallest in the class.

That's when she spoke up.

Apparently, there is a handicapped kid in her class that uses a walker to get around. She had told me about this student early on in the year and she wasn't sure how to interact with him. I told her just to be nice to him and hold the doors open and carry his things if he needs help. But most of all, not to let other kids be mean to him.

Turns out, this other boy, the one she was "bullying" was running to get ahead of this kid in line and cutting him off and making fun of him for being handicapped....so my little daughter decided to take it upon herself to set this kid straight. She mentioned that she only did to him what he did to the handicapped boy, and nothing more.

I couldn't help but smile...the bullying charge was thrown out and that other boy was suspended for 3 days.

It was a good story, thought I would share

That is a good story, yes. So now I get to inflict one in return...

My daughter is 13, and, ah, let's call it "blossoming" (gets it from her mother). She's also autistic, and largely nonverbal.

One day, we received a notice from her teacher, which started off assuring us she was not in trouble (such an encouraging beginning, yes?). It seems that one of the young men at her school decided that the combination of her appearance and her not speaking gave him carte blanche to manhandle the merchandise.

The moment he touched her inappropriately, she decked him. One punch, laid him flat on his a**, and went on with her day. Fortunately for her (not so much for him), another student witnessed what had happened, and hastened to tell an adult.

    I was so proud...

Good on her jonsills. She knows what's allowed and what's not. Now the question is, who has been teaching her to punch?

and good on Ajanus's daughter, she's already showing what type of adult she'll be.

You must be doing something right as parents, the pair of you or the 2 pairs of you.

Violence is okay when girls do it to boys. This is what anime and american commercialism have taught me.

    They are hardly a joy.
