Does anyone do custom pvp tournaments anymore?

Just curious, those were really fun to watch. I think the best tournament I've ever seen was the one that required you to run an offensive passive. Some really good ideas and some really clever builds showed up there.

Does anyone do that anymore? or is it all just BASH and duels now?

I have some thousands of globals just burning a hole in my pockets and was curious if there is even an interest for these types of tournaments anymore...of course, my globals, my rules  So you might be forced to use some very unorthodox methods to make your toons eligible to participate.

Don't be like the Qularr. They would not last one round in the Interstellar Galactic Arena...

Good that you posted this just as I posted my forum post a few hours ago.

We had a lot of ideas for this kinda thing but mainly in recent times we have just been doing team PvP now and again for fun. Since this latest update though the amount of PvP that has been happening is minimal.

Lots of people duel, not so many go into BASH which usually ends up as chaos anyway. We managed to get UTC popping this week a couple of times.

Competitive PvP will almost certainly need strict rules and judges and would be hard to get enough people involved as it is. Basically a lot of things are broken currently and there will always be certain set-ups that are better than others. Technically the best way to be create competetive PvP in CO is to have a 5v5 where no one has any heals and just uses things like mini mines or some other set power as their only real power with all the same stats and gear if not no stats or gear.

But then how would you know if they have gear on or not and how many people would have a respec to join in with it all? You would have to do it on the PTS and then most people are silver so wouldn't be able to do it.

I was thinking of making some strict character build rules. I mean, if you don't have the character space, or Respec available, or only have access to ATs, then obviously there will be tournaments that you just won't be eligible for.

I don't want to bias based on gear. If you took the time, farmed the globals, or did the Rampages, then you should have access to your own gear. However, also keep in mind that your current setup might not be viable for the tournament, so if you choose to use it, you might have to replace all the mods...and some people might not want to replace rank 8+ mods...some might just go grab a set of heroic gear and use that...or even Hierloom gear.

Of course, no devices would ever be allowed...however, they could be offered as rewards. I have a ridiculous amount of Legacy devices and my banks could overflow at any moment

My first idea, was to only allow powers from the same powerset, excluding the Toggle Form, that could come from any set, but the remaining 13 powers from 1 set.

I also like the offensive passive stipulation.

I'd love to hear more ideas, I might do something in the near future along these lines.

If you do the offensive passive thing you'd most likely have to not allow night warrior as it is probably the most defensive as for dodge comes while still giving boost to ranged damage and then the facepalm of shadow strike and stealth.

We had a lot of similar idea's on the CO.alition vent server with the thing limiting people to powersets and stuff. The BIG problem that I thought of is that you simply will not be able to tell people to pick certain powers for the tournament only. It costs 500g to respec so it could cost up to 1000g to enter the tournament not including any gear changes. As I said unless we do it on the PTS these ideas wouldn't be viable and the bigger the prize the more disappointing it'd be.

I had a similar idea a long time ago for tournament on the PTS server.

Everyone would need to use the same build. Isometry had some of the best suggestions in terms of making sure that duels could not last forever, would be fun for the fighters and the audience, and reward the people with he best tactics.

I think a key component was having many attacks (mixing melee and ranged with WTK as an attack that requires good timing), regen as the passive, and some other stuff. Need to find the thread though - some good stuff in there.

Yeah here's the thread about that PTS tourney....which did not end up happening unfortunately.

If you scroll down Isometry specifies some suggestions for a build. The idea came about when a friend and I we're fighting with nearly identical builds and every duel was close and super fun. And our discussions about tactics were interesting as well. This was back when uppercute + haymaker was amazing.

And here's the thread about the squishy tourney you referred to in the OP.

Sounds like a great idea, the problem is getting enough people onto the PTS to do it. Surely most people would just be using the ranged powers though?

It seems we have plenty of people wanting to go this going however and would be a great way to get something going PvP wise again.

Yeah it could be fun. Actually there are quite a few build ideas for it in the old thread.

Getting people to PTS would not be easy especially now, but maybe with a big enough reward it can be done.

Patriot Act hosts pvp tournaments sometimes. You could ask a representative of their SG when the next one is. They set unique rules and such in them too, which makes things interesting.
