I was doing some testing last night and it seems to me that the temp health points gained from Conviction are just for show as they appear to "poof" out of existence BEFORE the first incoming damage takes effect. (I was testing using the Death Lasers in Powerhouse and was hoping to use the extra health kindof like a one shot "force shield" buffer.)
I'm pretty sure that this has to be a bug or is there actually a situation where those extra health points do something other then for show.

To my knowledge, it increases the Celestial tree skills. More health makes for a bigger palliate heal. It also helps alleviate some of the burden of Iniquity. Other than that, it might not have any function outside a heal. I will have to do some research though.
I'm fairly certain that the added health is removed once the game recognizes that you will take damage, which probably happens before the damage actually shows up and is removed from your health bar.
I recall Conviction saving me from oneshots a couple of times while I used it, so I'm pretty sure that portion of it is working.
