Havent played since oh, mid 2010 or so, a mix of other games, and a nasty period of unemployment put me out of gaming comission, at least beyond the occasional bout of Gamefly. That, and when this game went F2P, not being able to use my FF chars, which all of mine are, made playing not the best option at that time. Now that I'm working again, and can afford a couple months to see if the game is still good(amazon time cards ftw), I have to ask-should I bother? I've been playing TOR and STO, and I miss superhero play greatly, RIP COH/V. So, fill me in?

I think I can say that for a long time, things are starting to look up for CO, the development team have dedicated a period of time (around a month I'd say) to be looking at the bugs in game which is a welcome surprise.

Mega D's are back soon (27th) the lvl 60s from last year, hopefully without the added [Become Level 1] beam they had last time

We have had two missions of new content and a couple of events which were pretty nice, here's hoping when they come around again they stick around.

New Vehicles, New Lockboxes, New Devices etc

If you do decide to come back, I could be wrong but you would have a bit of catching up to do

    Regardless, welcome back.

Im debating making a account with another email address and just testing out the game for a bit F2P with the framework chars. Unless there's any time card codes still floating around. I always liked the idea in this game of being able to design your own character. Its too bad you literally couldnt pick and choose at will, and say some of the "Need 8 powers" abilities couldn't just be brought down a notch or two based on how early you got them.

I know other subscribers have done the same, made a secondary account just for F2P Archetypes. When they take a break because there's another huge title (a Skyrim or Diablo, etc.), they'll take a break and drop in with that F2P account, just to socialize. The reason is exactly as you described...they want at least 1 or 2 characters that are never locked out. Within those F2P options, just FYI, the Unleashed, Behemoth, and Glacier are quite popular among F2P players. Soldier and Marksman are actually really good, too IMHO.

So a few other things just to fill you in:

Manage your expectations. IMHO, CO HAS improved, it's good, but perhaps not as good as people expect as our standards are rising.

If you unlock your old non-F2P characters, you'll have to update them (you should have free retcons for each char). CO changed the build framework from having 2 Superstats to 3. It makes a huge difference. There is also a new set of bonuses called Specializations. That's a little more complicated. Hopefully someone on your Friends' List is still around to guide you through this.

Your equipment also needs to be updated, too. The new gear is much more powerful than the old gear. Just visit the Auction House, just check out all the new items at your level, they're pretty cheap and much better than the old stuff.

Gameplay is much more focused on boss-battles, not mobs. CO's focus when you were still playing CO was doing missions, where you spent 90% of your time fighting mobs, 10% on bosses. That ratio is reversed now with the quick pick-up games called Alerts, where you quickly finish off the boss's henchmen then focus on the boss himself.

The new R&D mod system is basically like the gem system in Diablo. There's a pretty complicated tutorial. All it means is, you can now get items with "sockets" you can further upgrade by plugging them with "mods", which you'll find all over the place.

Want a Tank? Or a Jet Bike? You can get one. Not everyone likes vehicles in their capes game, but it's a really neat option that exists now.

    ---

The above are what I think were the most important things I learned when I came back, but no one told me, so I'm now just passing these hard lessons learned on to you.

There's some good guide threads stickied under Combat and POwers. Start reading there, that will help with the catchup.

Crafting is now mods/fusing- all your old components sell, you'll get more money than
pressing Ctrl right click and converting all in your bags and normal bank to rank 1 mods.

Crafted costume unlock especially weapons are valueable ... DON'T throw any out or sell cheap. check on the trade channel

Agreed. The price of just 1 freeform slot is way too high IMO.

Tier 3 powers had their requirements lowered. I believe Tier 2 also had its requirements lowered a bit.

In any case, the requirement of Tier 4 powers has definitely been made more lax. You no longer need 10 powers in a general category nor do you need to complete Vibora Bay Apocalypse.

No point really, It will take a matter of hours for any competent gamer to eat up what precious little content has been added to the game over the years.

Likeiwse the idea of playing CO without free form characters is largely pointless to anyone who has played from launch onward. Most I know who once played CO have long ago moved on due to the ridiculous prices placed on singular free form slots and a life time sub price that really needs to go down dramatically considering the life span expectations of the game drop significantly each month nothing really is done to improve the game in a meaningful way.

The fact is everyone in the MMO community knows not to trust in nor expect quality work from Cryptic anymore and only hero genre junkies linger in CO. My inner hero still lives, but only in my memories from a real hero game now lost to the ether.

conversely, if customizable superheros are your thing, i'd say the answer is still affirmative, because looking at the other games available, mmo and regular, console and pc and even handheld, there still isnt anything else that really scratches the customizable superhero game itch, and doesn't look like there will be for a long time. I mean yeah, i wish cryptic would have the resources to do more, the contrast to development scope and pace of the departed one is painful. but for the theme, its kind of a captive audience.

    My two cents are simple.

I came to CO two and a half years ago because I became bored with its predecessors gamestyle ( my personal preference and it was after 6 years of non stop play so lets not start a no u ). I'm not bored yet and I'm still here and I'm very picky over my MMO's I dont tend to stick around crap ones.
