Actually, that's kind of the background for my toon Backfire - he joined VIPER for the medical coverage, and too late found out that VIPER's medical plan included being used as an involuntary test subject at the Serpent's command. That's where he got his flame powers from - the same ones he used to bust out of containment with, before switching sides.
See thats the problem with heroes, always going through this long arduous process of being discovered before saying, oh no, I found the light, time to be a good guy. And they always get their super powers from being in the right place at the wrong time. Getting bit by spiders, experiments, ray gun power infusion, gamma experiments gone wrong. Its all bs.
The true heroes are the villains, they make their path with a goal in mind, from day one. They build their powers from scratch, they choose to be bitten by the radio active spider.
While the heroes run around like headless fuddy duddys tripping over themselves in an attempt to "do the right thing".
But will a hero ever expose their own corrupt government? Will a hero ever expose the mayor and his scandalous love affairs behind his wife's back? Will a hero ever throw money in the streets to the poor and unfortunate unsuspecting citizens, usurping the monetary power bankers that control the world? Will a hero ever throw their own police forces in prison for corruption wrongful arrest and harassment of their citizens?
Will a hero ever attempt to take over the world creating their own utopia?
The gangs of millinium city have seen the light, and know the truth about defender and his rich power broker families and friends causing poverty and corruption all throughout millinium city. They don't care about the poor, they don't care about rebuilding the streets, or fixing the cities roads.
Defender doesn't care about poor people.
But the purple gang does, the maniacs care, psi mon cares, viper cares. Join today and get a real job, with real pay, and real benefits. Your educational background doesn't matter, we can make you a genius.
Well, in gameplay sense you can't. (Like everyone said)
But I'm roleplaying a character that isn't really a hero nor a villain. Just someone who does his own things and sometimes helps other people in the process.
He isn't evil, but sometimes he can't be bothered to help. We all have those days, right?
I don't know why I'm even replying as everyone has pointed it out already but asdhasdh and banana.
It didn't help that it utterly failed at giving a comic book super-villain experience. It was more or less just CoH reskinned and some names changed with different powers.
Heroes are generally reactive, and you can lead them along a storyline. Villains are generally more active, creating plots, leaving clues, creating trickery...almost impossible to create a general storyline to follow with that. CoV had you being a bunch of different people's flunkies for 90% of your arcs. It just didn't work like that.
I have to say that I was really enjoying the newer villain arcs. For once it felt like the contacts were working for you rather than the other way around. Sure, there were a few original CoV arcs like that (Diviner Maros, for instance) but you are correct that there wasn't enough of them.

I have a few heroes currently in CO that would: Lady Tsukira, Dreadstorm, and Crimson Hellfire. Lady Tsukira's a ninja that utilizes her skills to uncover and expose any criminal act, even if it leads back to the government; Dreadstorm is a vigilante that doesn't believe in the system and will beat up street thug and cop alike if he finds reason to; and Crimson Hellfire is dedicated to helping anyone in need in any way that he can as he grew up in an impoverished neighborhood that was overrun with gangs and crooked cops.
There'll be others as I unlock more slots and port more characters from CoH, but suffice to say, I at least make sure some of my heroes realize that the government is far from being pure as crystal white snow.
Ah, but the new forums are so much better than the old ones that used to have much more functionality.
Because now PW doesn't even have to pretend to listen.
As per villains, I will say that DCUO has some amazingly _REALLY TERRIFYING_ villain plots, unlike most of the CoV stuff.
Like, in one plot, you run around stealing the souls of citizens to be consumed in rituals to bring demons to the world. That's... a bit more than Luthor's 40 cakes...
Campaign: The Fenwick Cycle NWS-DKR9GB7KH
Wicks and Things: NW-DI4FMZRR4 : The Fenwick merchant family has lost a caravan! Can you help?
Beggar's Hollow: NW-DR6YG4J2L : Someone, or something, has stolen away many of the Fenwicks' children! Can you find out what happened to them?
Into the Fen Wood: NW-DL89DRG7B : Enter the heart of the forest. Can you discover the secret of the Fen Wood?

I can agree with that. I also liked the Praetorian "evil evil" arcs. They felt really evil, if not exactly super-villainy per se.
Oh good! I'm not the only one who thinks the lockboxes have lost their original touch. I mean, look at the earliest lock boxes: Mountain Lock Box, Takofane Lock box, Cursed Lock Box. I started playing CO when they first introduced the Mountain lockbox. Been playing ever since. But now lock boxes are just foolish. And the new costume sets aren't rolling in every other week like they used to.
But what I was originally saying, they could gain from making an option to be a Villain. I understand why it's basically seen as a hero game. But Champion could also be used to describe a villain just as easily as it is for hero.

So come to the side that cares.
Be a villian.

I wish we had a way to report posters/mark posts as abusive. This dude here deserves a mod-smack, just out of principle.
