Haven't been able to get into the game. I get past the patch and the game opens with the Cryptic logo, and it stays there for a while before it crashes and I get a message saying "Fatal Error: Unable to initialize on-demand patching and connect to Patch Server: The connection was idle for too long."
I played yesterday NO PROBLEM. Today I am getting the error everyone else is getting. Cannot play. Time for a new game? I think so. As a CoH refugee thought I had found a home at CO.....nope.
I have been getting this problem for around several months now on and off. If any of you CRYPTIC staff see this pay attention! i am a gold member and i spend a good amount of money in the store also. But the reason you should be fixing this is that its your responsibility. If you dont want to fix it i predict that CO will be going very soon the way of CoH. Personally, if this is not resolved, I plan to discontinue my membership.
In technical terms, what this means is that GameClient.exe is not able to connect to patchserver.crypticstudios.com on TCP port 7255.
To verify your connectivity outside the game, I would suggest two things:
1. tracert patchserver.crypticstudios.com
2. Download http://files.champions-online.com/nettest.exe and make sure you can get to all of the ports.
Typical resolutions to this problem are opening ports on your home router or disabling adding an exception for Champions Online to your antivirus program.
I hope this helps! If you have any other difficulties, please contact technical support directly by filing a ticket.

Anyone know a fix for this?
On the launcher when starting up, there should be a little Options button at the top. Click that, and then hit 'disable on-demand patching'.
Deliciously nutritious!
Thank you for your help though.
You're a nice person.
I'm sorry to hear that you're having problems.

Now I am locked out with the same message.
Y'all really need to plan for this nonsense.
I was getting an "Error 36" and was stuck trying to patch over and over, but ur suggestion worked like a charm; thanks!
EDIT: once it patched all the way to 99% it began telling me error 36 all over again. Tried this: http://co-forum.perfectworld.com/showthread.php?t=252111 and ddnt work either. Any other suggestions?
EDIT 2: I fixed it by logging in to Arc and the accessing game thru it.
Assumption is the mother of all mistakes!!!
