Repeatable Purchases That Are Worth It : Sidekick Changes

crypticbuxomcrypticbuxom Posts: 4,620 Arc User
I suggest a rather bold but much needed revitalization of the premade Sidekick devices in the Store.

Its obvious that these don't sell well or even at all and the time limit until it is gone hurts that even more. But what if sidekicks were permanent? Let me be more specific about why this would work starting with the benefits to players and then the ultimate benefits to Cryptic.

After their time is up they go on a 20 hour Real Time Cooldown
Instead of the hour limit and they discard, the sidekick goes on a 20 real time hour cooldown. You may switch to a different sidekick device to use for their hour a day, but that one from before cannot be used for another 20 hours.

Sidekicks bind to characters
This would force players to purchase a sidekick for each one of their characters they want to have it on. The more different sidekicks they want on each character, the more repeat purchases they'll make to get them. Make them unique so that a player can only bind one of each kind of sidekick.

The most important reason why you would make these permanent and character bind is to make players purchase one for each of their characters. Currently that could be 8 sidekicks for a total of 1600 Zen per set to get on a character. They would have 8 hours of sidekick action a day.

This game is all about alt-itus and having those cool premade sidekicks around more often would add a much needed spark to a player's game experience. Changing them in this way to make players want to purchase them all would really boost sales up with assets already in the game. All Cryptic has to do is change their bind setting and how their cooldowns work.

This is by all means not for the custom sidekick system that Cryptic mentioned earlier this year. This is for the premade sidekick devices in the store.

And while we're at that, fix them because at least mine are de-spawning a few seconds after being summoned. They're completely useless.

The only sidekick I have ever purchased from the Zen store is the Harajuku Twins. And that was just for the weapon skins that come with the purchase. The only other sidekicks I have drops from missions like the Steelhead Soldier from Whiteout and the Indy Kid from the July 4th event.

If sidekicks were more like you suggest, I'd certainly consider them.

Custom sidekick needs to happen sooner rather than later; I'd pay out the hind-quarters to have alts dropping in and kicking tail.

I have absolutely no need for purchased sidekicks.

"Sidekick from my roster" would be cool, then I could play more than one of my toons at a time.

But paying for one of Cryptic's drones? no thanks.

If they could some how link up the configurations for a permanent sidekick system the way they have the nemesis system set up where you can create a costume for it. I'd buy one for every character on my roster.....EASILY. And I'm not even like some of these people with a full set of toons.

Having to summon the premades would sort of devalue them. We don't want another vehicle debacle where we can't even change the paint job on the damn things. But at the same time we're talking about a sidekick here not a vehicle. You can afford in a way to let the vehicle appearance customization slide a bit. But the way STO has its officer system.....man that'd bring an entirely new level of gameplay to this game.

Just think of the synergy using spells that make your opponent weak against dimensional damage, then having a sidekick that uses dimensional damage to add in that extra umpf. Or being a supporty type character with strong group buffs, then having your sidekick benefit from those. Or just being an A typical Red White and Blue hero, walking around town with your female sidekick counterpart dressed to impress, matching outfits.

I'd dump the same amount of money I did for the vehicle launch for something like this. Maybe more for some extra costume pieces to customize those sidekicks with. I know it worked for star trek, have a bunch of officers, then go and buy some costume sets to put onto them.

Also 20 hours seems kinda ridiculous. I mean look at what happened to the backup devices.....

Dunno how the STO officers are, but I'm guessing the custom SK's would use a similar moveset template system to the Nems. Be nice if they could use a few of their actual powers from that alt's power-tray, but understandable if they don't.

You all entirely missed the point of the topic. To make the premade sidekicks in the store not a complete waste. Leave out custom sidekicks as they ought to be something else entirely.

My problem with the current sidekicks is the same problem I have with any of the consumables. Price.

I'll pay 50-75-cents (US) for a piece of candy. I won't pay $2 for one.

I'd buy a lot of sidekicks for 50-cents each. I'd buy a few for closer to $1. As with others, the only one I've bought was the harajuku twins and that was for the costume bits.

I have an even bigger problem with the boost powers that are far less helpful and more expensive.

That's because nothing in the store is priced intelligently but with greed.

Pretty much the pricing policy. One of the few things I could call priced well are costume sets and hideouts. Hideouts are priced well for me because they don't follow that BS-- I just checked, they changed the price when cryptic coins were converted to zen. Nevermind it all!I hate so many aspects of this company. ._.

Anyways, I like your system. It's definitely a step in the right direction.

I say stuff and I say things, sometimes together but only when I'm feeling adventurous.

You want to *really* make sidekicks sell? Easy! Allow us to make them use a saved costume of our choosing.

The 1-hour + long cooldown is fine, but having them be premades is just not suitable to the highly customizable nature of champions...

They can make custom sidekicks something else. I'm talking about already in game assets changed to suit a repeatable purchase across all our toons.

Unless the tech is there in any of their other games, don't expect this to ever happen. We only get hand-me-downs, so best bet would be like Neverwinter. You get a character of a premade class and shove mods into them and then they jump into lava because they're real smart.
