I played City of Heroes from 2005 right up to the very second the servers were switched off.
The funny thing is: City of Heroes was originally developed and run by Cryptic. I was there when they were still in charge, and you know what? The atmosphere here looks just like it did there at the time.
Cryptic might be good at the initial development of a game, but they don't have a good track record when it comes to keeping that game going. They don't seem to get that MMO players tend to stick around and don't want to play in the same sandbox forever with the same toys.
I don't think the game is the problem. I clearly see the loads of potential it has. And I see just as clearly how that potential is being ignored.
The best thing Cryptic could do is develop games and sell them to other people, because they suck at running them. CoH got loads better after Cryptic was no longer running it, and I'd put money on the same thing happening to CO if they were to ever outright sell it to someone else.
I've only been here since December, but I enjoy it well enough. It should be noted though, as a super-hero geek with an underpowered computer, I really have no place else to go at the moment (and don't particularly like what I've heard about DCUO, even if they didn't have me locked out of the door because of my weak graphics card).

Don't get me wrong, the game itself is pretty fun.
But not so fun that I'm willing to keep paying for the aspect of it I like (freeform power selection).
I'm on an extremely tight budget, so I have to choose things I spend money on carefully. It took me several months to find an extra $15 I could afford to basically throw away if it turned out I wasn't going to stick around.
I started playing CO about a month ago. And I enjoy it. My first toon is an Inferno, I prefer ranged DPS over melee. She's L12 and fun to play.
I moved over from CoH after the fall, but not before playing some Splinter Cell and Assassin's Creed games. Playing those helped me get over the loss and move on to CO.
I really like this game. Just don't ask me whether CO is better than CoH. You don't want me going into that discussion. It won't be pretty...
Again, I like CO. Still getting used to some things like how character builds and power selection work. How to craft and slot items. And other bits and pieces.
But so far, I'm pretty happy about CO and really enjoy playing.
I won't be subscribing however, mostly because of financial reasons. So I'll probably stay a lifetime silver member.
The people who like it are too busy playing it to whine in the forums.
My personal opinion is it's the best conceived MMORPG I've ever played; but since I'm off to play it now, I don't have time to explain why.

Oh, understandable. There've been times I couldn't afford my CoX sub. But by the time it ended, the $15 already had a place in my budget, so I came out even coming here. I know what it's like to have to say "nope, not this month", though.

Same here. When CoH went F2P, as soon as I was able, I bought enough points to fill my rewards tree, so that if I ever needed to unsub, I lost as little as possible. Fortunately, I was something like $50 away, so that wasn't too bad.
Being able to sneak the cost of a LTS out of my tax return was really nice. Now I don't have to worry about MMO fees for as long as this game lasts.

I enjoy CO quite a bit. I'd love to see it grow with new zones and more content, especially more challenging end game content, but I love the customization. Whatever I can imagine, I can create and play in here. That's what keeps me coming back.

The main problem is the company developing it. Cryptic.
They're essentially a McMMO. They slap it together, then have a *female dog* of a time actually supporting it and growing it. Mainly because their development style is "generate spaghetti code and then start piling on the undocumented hacks".
While a lot of the ugliness you're seeing in the community is stuff you'd see anywhere, a sizeable chunk of it has been wholly earned by Cryptic for their shoddy workmanship, lack continuity, and just general "don't give a damn" where they simply don't pay attention to customer feedback, including technical and gameplay issues that've been around since before the game went live.
Well.. I quit again yesterday for the foreseeable future. Just completed my uninstall.

I'm going to use Marvel Heroes if/when I feel the need to don some tights.
And will likely be seeking a competitor to plant some funding into to get it off the ground properly. Custom Superhero engines are great and I plan on being there when the next one comes along.
Well that lasted a whole day. Already talking to yourself?
Well, everybody else is already used to his bull - sockpuppetry is the only logical step at this point.
"Science teaches us to expect -- demand -- more than just eerie mysteries. What use is a puzzle that can't be solved? Patience is fine, but I'm not going to stop asking the universe to make sense!"
I love it. Legitimately, it's what I do with my free time. I delegate a night a week to go out and play with friends, as a money saving thing, but when I'm off work? I'm pretty much putzing in vent and playing this thing the rest of the time.
I've got enough vets on my friends list that seem to be the same to be able to say that, in general? Even if people don't like the game, they sure as hell play a lot of it. I'd say it's either masochism, or people read different people complaining about different facets of the game to equal out to everyone not liking it. This, to the best of my knowledge, is patently false. lol I also think it's why the forum gets such a bad rep. We all have distinct things we want to see, and don't want to see, so someone's always gonna be saying something's a bad idea. It's the hazard of a game with this much flexibility, I guess.
Welcome! Feel free to shoot me a line in game @eviltaco. I'm always up to help out a new player.
In game, I am @EvilTaco. Happily killing purple gang members since May 2008.
Okay, calling me an "apologist fanboi" is merely amusing at this point - but sticking my name on the same page as a bunch of anime girls??
It's on!!
"Science teaches us to expect -- demand -- more than just eerie mysteries. What use is a puzzle that can't be solved? Patience is fine, but I'm not going to stop asking the universe to make sense!"
1- Flight and Teleportation. The travel powers are really fun and this game is one of the few that tried to make the z-axis work in gameplay (the missiles in the desert, the flying aliens and demons that patrol other enemy areas, you couldn't just fly away and get away).
2- Combat. The game's combat system is a fun mesh of action and RPG.
3- The backdrop. I played Champions PnP when I was much younger. So there's a lot there for me to dig. I'm very much a child of the bronze age of comics so this game gives me an outlet for that. It's also flexible enough to give people who like other aspects of comics an outlet as well, from anime, to the Punisher, to whatever.
That covers what I like about it and why I came back to it.
Should I not invest my time/money?
Time? Yes. Money? Minimal. The game's development over the past couple of years demonstrates that financial investment is probably a fruitless endeavor on your part. Pay to get what you want out of the game and not one penny more.
In regards to the forums? Chill. They're just forums.
oh, and wanted to hit this one. CUSTOMIZATION. coh and this game created a relatively unique ituation where my character was "mine" in a way that my draeni monk or canathan elementalist could never be. while i still worked within a rule-set and was not unbalanced relative to other players so fun is uneven. I still have made as much of rian frostdrake's look at that he feels like mine. as he was in coh and a pretty good approximation here. the feeling of ownership is, i feel, why people here and in coh got so many semi-professional pics done. dcou does not have the depth of customization to do that, marvel..we know how that went, even games like secret world and eq2 have constraints on your appearance based on the setting.
now that coh is gone, co is it, you want to customize, here is your only option. wish it was supported better, but co is quite literally the only option if you really want to affect your look to a significant degree.

There's your answer.
But yeah these forums are toxic.
I went to City of Heroes forums one April Fools' Day and it was Funny.
I popped back over here and it was like a conversation between three angry kids with asperger syndrome.
I think people only post in the forums when the dopamine stops getting absorbed during game play.
If you are in 'the zone' having fun, you won't come to the forums at all.
I gotta say, Next, after reading a lot of your posts, you come across as reflexively contrarian. I think if we were singing praises, you'd be unable to restrain yourself from naysaying. CoH forums were positive for a reason. Champions is not for a reason.
To the OP, Champions is a great game. I LOVE the customization in looks and powers. I made a hero almost exaclty the way I wanted and he's perfectly feasible in any PvE situation and fun to play.
The problem is that attention and development since I've been here--not quite a year--has been just abysmal. I mean "wow, they can actually get away with that in an MMO and still survive?!?!" level bad.
There is a reason that these forums are negative, and it's not that "Superhero games bring negative Nancys" (quite the opposite) or "Champions is a negativity magnet", it's that the development is just really that bad.
I honestly hope that it will change right now and you will never know what I'm talking about and just think I"m nuts. And it could if they'd just do it. But, unfortunately, chances are the longer you stick around, the less baffling the general tenor of the forums will seem.

I am the voice of reasons.
CoH forums weren't so much positive even before the announcement of its ultimate doom.
That one day had notable humor that this forum never achieves, ever.
Maybe I laugh at my own jokes halfway as much as I snickered at some of those CoH posts.
There's definately a different style of players in the two games.
I must say the CoX community has brought very little but negativity to Champions Online.
Maybe Cryptic sees some dollars out of those monthly subs, I just see a community chat channel
that shovels manure and the exCoXalots that don't know about the channel whine in zone chat or the forums.
There's likely a silent majority out there, not a lot of community in silence.

I wouldnt say COH forum was positive per se. There was plenty of whining about features, calls for nerfs, people against those nerf callers, pvp people blaming pve people, pve people blaming pvp people for nerfs, suggestions, plenty of people that looked to do nothing but tear down those suggestions, people that argued with those people, the numerous trolls, the numerous people that trolled the trolls, and more people that trolled the people that trolled the trolls. And not to mention a lot of people wiht "i'm better than though" attitudes. And people who picked fights with those people. And COH community were notorious for dog piling on people, especially non- forum cartel members. Some people acted like they were beyond question and their opinion was final say and woe to anyone that question it or had different point of view that wasnt in their clique or they will sic their minions on ya. Overall it wasnt the worse I seen on the internwet but it sre as hell wasnt the best. It was about ya average internet community. Some good some bad, and when it goes away, people tend to remember the "golden days" as if everyone got along just fine when there was fire flame and trolling there like any other place.
I think here, alot of the negativity is...well I can see where alot of it stems from. But COH forum was far from a shining example of positivity. And that is before the announcement. After announcement, yeeesh. All hell broke loose.
To Jaguar and Next--you both have valid points, and, in my defense, I wasn't very clear. It wasn't my intent to put CoH forth as a shining example of ideal positivity in forums, I just meant that they were "generally relatively positive compared to Champions"--well, at least before the announcement was used by people as an excuse to show their hineys--but I didn't explicitly state those things, so that's my bad :P.
Champions is a great game with lots of potential, as is often said, but the lack of lots of basic things like communication, development, bug fixes, high-level content, basic stability, etc. seems to me to be a real problem.
I have to ask--Next, do you feel that the current state of development in Champions is fine and that you'd be content with it if it stayed this way?

I think development is in line with their income. Their income is inline with their marketing.
Their marketing is inline with the fact that even if they added a
hundred thousand new players a day, 90% would churn out in under four hours.
Considering they have a new team that doesn't know the source code that has to be at least half million lines long. They don't know every console command of which there are nearly a thousand. They don't know every error code and every old bug going back to beta. They don't know all the flukes of the map editor. They probably don't know about the floating point bug that makes some items creep every update. They have conflicting demands from players, and those demands from the vocal minority almost certainly conflict with their spreadsheets of actual user activity.
Probably none of them made any of the costumes, model rigs, or animations.
If I stop to consider the complexity of things, yes, I am content, impressed and appreciative of the minds and hands behind the scenes. If I consider that I have not played all the powers, maps, adventures and with all the people in the game, I know I have far more than I've paid for. Then I consider they pay me to play now and I want to give them hugs and ask for a raise.
Maintaining such a peaceful Zen state is not so easy.
When the player population is lacking or the churn rate is especially tiring or the latest event only makes people angry, its like someone at Cryptic did something wrong that is ruining my business. Like they took the sign off the front of the store, they turned off the neon lights and let hobos from City of Heroes sleep in their own vomit and urine out by the front door. Oh that gets my goat.

Whose fault is that?
Cryptic's.

I suppose you're impressed by the banks and car manufacturers that managed their assets so poorly that they "needed" bailouts.

They pay you? Is that some kind of admission of astroturfing?
Maintaining such a peaceful Zen state is not so easy.
Yeah, you must really have a lot of Zen to so casually state the following. Or maybe you mean the currency Zen for the Cryptic Store. That'd be more believable.

They pay you, too. And me. Q is fairly readily available; get enough of it, and you can swap it for Zen on the exchange, and buy things. (My last two costume sets were purchased that way.)
Sure, they don't pay us a lot...

Well I think there are two different thing. A lot of negativity is mostly about the game it self and the stuff that you list as problems in your second paragraph. COX, was more about cliques and who opinion matters more. While on the surface it's positive. It really isnt positive at all. Looks like a conversation could barely go a page without someone nit picking at another for anything, whether it's because they disagree wit htheir opinion and instead of sticking to the points, they instead start pointing out grammar mistakes or something petty like that to dodge the real issue and get at the goat of another. I'm not even sure if COX was more positive than here. It's was more positive speak towards the actual game, but overall, there were too many people that were butts towards others just to be butt. Here there is few of that here and there but generally it's gripes about the game, the problems that you even see.
Yeah, and that is the reason of the negativity here in that regards compared to COX. I guarantee that just about any game, that have potential and problems like here, the people would react the same. Hell, even some people from COX got right into it and noticed it and was just as negative as the rest of the people that been here for years, even though they were super positive on the cox forum.

some of the first posts from COX players; where do we find the other cox players? Already arranged by a few players.
Then a few weeks later; when is your next update? we don't get them. WHAT? you should complain..... etc
Churn is not Cryptic's fault, churn is a force of nature in the MMO world.
Players download and play games and leave games more often than they stay to play.
I lasted 30 minutes in Conan.
A week in Secret World even though I wasted cash on a lifetime of regret.
About twenty minutes in Raiderz. Less than an hour in Fallen Earth.
Long enough to be murdered from one side of the map to the next in Blacklight retribution.
About 20 minutes in Kaneva and an hour in entropia universe.
About 15 minutes over at DC.
Tried that Marvel beta twice just long enough to download it, play a few minutes and be disgusted.
I played STO for about an hour before the F2P update.
It took about thirty minutes to be convinced nobody plays Myth online anymore.
I played Neverwinter for four days and havent' logged in since.
Vindictus amused me long enough to make a little video of bouncing boobs.
It took me seven years since playing beta to pay for a Vendetta Online account.
I just mailed three boxes of X-box 360 games to a poor friend, half those games went back
in the case within 30 minutes of playing them and never came back out.
Thats just me,churning through a dozen mmos and three dozen console games.
Same goes for millions of players: download, try, be not impressed, move on.
I tried CoX, after it went F2P. Didn't care for the playstyle - an energy blaster should be blasting energy, not firing off one blast and then punching things.
I played WoW for a long time - got a character up into the 60s somewhere, and several others not quite so high. Driven away from there by the noob-haters (I was more a newbie than a noob, but if nobody's willing to tell you things, how are you supposed to learn them?), and by the game design which actively punishes soloing after about lvl 45.
Gave DDO a shot, because I started off as a D&D player before any other RPGs, but I don't think I stuck with any characters past the first town. It just didn't click for me.
So yeah, Cryptic doesn't cause churn - people finding the games they like causes churn.
I tried CO during a free weekend back before F2P, and believe it or not, I was unimpressed. Character creation was terribly confusing (I was expecting something more like the PnP Champs, and that wasn't happening, obviously), and since I didn't know about the half-graphics thing, I was disappointed with the graphics. (Tried again after F2P; ATs make things easier for a newbie, and I was advised about turning half-graphics off, so I quickly came to love the game.)
I was referred to STO from here, and fell in like with that game (not love - they haven't seen any of my money ).
On the strength of those two, I tried Neverwinter. I gave it a shot, because I really did want to like it - but somehow that never worked out. I think it was the unimaginative story construction, and the fact that I couldn't change the controls - I had to use the mouse, like it or lump it.

At least 30%, yes, but at most, 20%.

Well you do look a little like Sailor Jupiter.
Then I realized it was less amusing.
Time? Yes. Money? Minimal. The game's development over the past couple of years demonstrates that financial investment is probably a fruitless endeavor on your part. Pay to get what you want out of the game and not one penny more.
In regards to the forums? Chill. They're just forums.
It appears I'm not the only one!
now that coh is gone, co is it, you want to customize, here is your only option. wish it was supported better, but co is quite literally the only option if you really want to affect your look to a significant degree.

Cryptic's.
Whose fault is that?
Cryptic's.
Whose fault is it that the dev team kept changing that we now have untrained newbies?
Cryptic's.
Says you.
Again, whose fault for the newbies?
Cryptic's.
I suppose you're impressed by the banks and car manufacturers that managed their assets so poorly that they "needed" bailouts.
They pay you? Is that some kind of admission of astroturfing?
Yeah, you must really have a lot of Zen to so casually state the following. Or maybe you mean the currency Zen for the Cryptic Store. That'd be more believable.
That was just uncalled for.
Trolololololol on, troll.

WHAT? you should complain..... etc

Its the way of the world.
