So, I've made the leap over level 25 and made a nemesis...the problem is that he's a chump. I was hoping for a real challenge, but the truth is there appears to be something about his power set matched to mine that makes him look like a complete potato against me.
so, my question is this: if my hero is primarily Might/Telepathy Freeform, what is the most challenging Power set that I could give to my opponent? what would be hardest for me to deal with and why? my next Nemesis will need to be much more challenging if i'm to enjoy the process.
Darkness is pretty strong.
The Toxic set gives you a fairly powerful Nemesis.
'Wen considered the nature of time and understood that the universe is, instant by instant, recreated anew. Therefore, he understood, there is in truth no past, only a memory of the past. Blink your eyes, and the world you see next did not exist when you closed them. Therefore, he said, the only appropriate state of the mind is surprise. The only appropriate state of the heart is joy. The sky you see now, you have never seen before. The perfect moment is now. Be glad of it.' Terry Pratchet The Thief Of Time
Play on Elite skill level, since your nemesis will only be encountered in instances.
Your nemesis and his minions will be significantly tougher.
oh, that's a given. I don't play on anything but elite. the above reference to him going full potato was on elite as well. what I mean is that increase in difficulty is not nearly enough to make him challenging.
Best thing to do is to RP the encounter as your nemesis having a way to depower you.
Unslot your passive.
Restrict your powers.
I actually do that sometimes lol. I made an alternate costume for the hero that looks like a huge Riding Armor robot with him sitting in the chest cavity. when riding it, he can use some limited PA powers, but has to give up all his Telepathy, and cannot Teleport or run, only walk. Problem is, one of the PA powers he uses is Chest beam...dead nemesis..
do you mean to say Infernal? because I hadn't though of that...I will surely try it if I can.
Yea, Infernal, sorry. I made an Infernal Nemesis once and it is one of the strongest I've seen. Alert wise, Telepathy/Telekinesis tend to be KRAZY strong.

Telekinesis nemesis is actually pretty strong, just let him charge Ego breach at you and you're sure to lose some damage. If you want challenge in Nemesis alerts pick up Gadgeteering or Munitions. Hehe (Gadgeteering one has huge forcefield on top of the health and munitions has Lightning reflexes)

Oh the memories of having my gadgeteering nemesis trolling the lv 6s in the nemesis alerts....
From my experience, Might, Power Armor and Gadgeteering are the most challenging. Might supervillains (doesn't even have to be a nemesis) deal a lot of damage and can even use Unleashed Rage! Power Armor supervillains have a very strong defense and many ranged attacks that knock or repell, making them especially hard for melee heroes. And Gadgeteer nemeses, for whatever reason, have Personal Force Field as their passive. Not the nerfed player version, but the annoying Draconis version!
Telepathy is, in my oppinion, the weakest powerset for nemeses.
I further recommend not to use Darkness or Dual Blades, Those are still bugged and can despawn randomly! Also, don't do nemesis alerts with a Darkness nemesis, for they have the same regeneration rate as Ao'qephoth!

this is all great info. I will share a bit back though: the nemesis in question that I created was in fact a Might Nemesis. I think the issue is that my Hero also uses Might (with Telepathy backing it up) and so it's pretty much blow for blow. The difference is that I have support and he doesn't. This may prompt me to listen to you on the Gadgeteering. you aren't the first one to mention it, and I could think of a number of villain concepts that could really use it effectively.
So that's a good vote for Infernal and for Gadgeteering too...anybody with any ideas on what nemesis minions are the hardest? His Minions are Might as well, and they actually put up a longer fight than he did, simply because they came in numbers.
It's not a question of whether your nemesis is weak or strong in general, it's a matter of how strong a nemesis powerset is. Some are even less than potatoes, like Single Blade, others however are very tough (not strong, tough) like Power Armor, Might or Gadgeteering. One can assume such power difference was intentional to give people the option to face stronger or weaker nemesis, but it's a very lame way of doing so. If it was up to me, I would've made the nemesis adjust to the player, until the player can just barely win after some good struggle.

But it works only in alerts. And people hate that kind of "challenge" in alerts.
Also, there is a chance of the other bug to kick in, making the nemesis go "Screw you, I'm outta here!"

I've gotten the same results in any of the other encounters outside the Nemesis story line, such as the Cyberlord encounter from Whiteout or the encounter in the Andrith Ruins. I think it also happens in Nemecon as well, but it's been a while.

I agree wholeheartedly about it being a sloppy way of doing it. if they wanted to give people that option, then the best way might have been to allow people a kind of "freeform" control over the Nemesis. If you could build it just like your hero, there'd be a potential to build some really exceptionally powerful Nemesis. Even better, this would give Silver players the chance to tool around with freeform characters and see how great they are without letting them play it. In this way they could build a "strong" or "weak" nemesis based on what powers and stats they give him. Perhaps even allowing people to make Nemesis for eachother as a sort of challenge.
If you want a strong nem, you can try the void/darkness powerset. That's the most annoying and challenging builds out there.
However, don't go into any Nemesis smash alerts if you're going to make that nemesis. You'll just annoy a bunch of people.

I wonder if it would be a good idea to do some smash alerts and see what other people's nemesis are like? see if I find one that feels more challenging than mine?

Whoever you are, be that person one hundred percent. Don't compromise on your identity.

I always pull my punches to make it seem like my nemesis is actually a nemesis.
I never bring a team to fight my nem...because seeing him being taken out in a few seconds would just be absurd.

is that another supporter for an overhaul of the difficulty system? enemies need to be increased in power at least twice as much as they are

Well...not really.
I mean...I'm perfectly fine with every other villain powerlevel in the game.
I just want to have the option to make my Nemesis one of the most powerful villains I face in the game...if I wanted to.
